I can see why hobbits liked bagpipes. And don't tell me that Tolkien made no mention of them. I won't listen. That's a dwarf with long red hair in the last one. #3 is stroking his bagpipe rather than playing it.

Whoa, dood )

mediaeval art, dudelsack, hobbits

There's something so deliciously provacative about those dudelsacks.

They really are the, um, baggiest of bags. Rather unusual, actually.

And he's doing it one-handed.

I agree - number three clearly has something other than music on his mind, despite the fact he's doing a Satchmo on it.

It's his first time. Be gentle with him.

That one is very I don't quite know the right word, maybe phallic? It could let some questions float as to what was out his mind over the time those were drawn maybe he never got around to spot those

They're very phallic. The way the artist has accentuated the seam of the bag -- bagpipes aren't always drawn that way -- makes it hard not to see the likeness.

In this particular set of images, the men look like they are "wearing" large breasts. So, what if anything does that say about the musicians and/or the artist, I wonder.

It probably says more about the viewer. :D
