The Christmas Card
If Scotty hadn't decided to clean the desk he would never have found it. It was so sweet of Julia and Lizzie to have sent him a Christmas card.
A light blue ribbon decorated with snowflakes gave a lovely winter touch to the red and green background, with its Santa Clause dancing next to a great Christmas tree. When Scotty opened it, he read in big bold golden letters, Merry Christmas Scotty, and a love you, under it in handwritten silver letters.
His mind drifted to the fantasy of holding his child on his lap, and help the little one write his name on the holiday card for his grandparents. He placed the card in full view on the shelf, wondering why Kevin hadn't mentioned it, and went on to his cleaning.
The envelope was nowhere to be found. Maybe Kevin had thrown it away.
When he came home, Scotty greeted him, and proudly showed him Lizzie's card. Kevin didn't seem to share his enthusiasm. Another problem at work or with the family?
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing!"
"Kevin!"
"Fine! I just..."
"Kevin!"
"Lizzie didn't make that card. I did."
Scotty didn't understand, and despite his best effort he couldn't erase the perplexity out of his face.
Kevin smiled at him and in a tiny voice said, "Happy Holidays, Scotty."
Scotty looked at the card again in a different perspective. "When did you..? How did you...?"
"Mom organized a crafts afternoon to distract Kitty. Rebecca made wedding announcements and I just wanted to make something for you."
"That's just so sweet, Kevin. Thank you!"
"You're not too disappointed?"
"Why would I be?"
"Well, you thought this was made by a three year old!"
"A very smart three year old, if that makes you feel any better."
"A little. Can I have a hug instead?" The End
