Good News

“Kevin! Kev, where are you? I’ve got the best news to tell you!”

Scotty took away his jacket in a flash, fighting with an uncooperative sleeve. His excitement subdued when he realized he would have to delay his announcement. Plunged in late afternoon obscurity, the loft seemed alone and abandoned. In hindsight, he should have guessed Kevin wasn’t home. He always fought with him to switch off lights, and electronic equipments when he left a room.

Tonight would be a night to celebrate. After visiting countless coffee shops, restaurants, bistros, taverns, and even an old bakery, Saul and he had found the perfect space for their future business. The ideal situation, in a lively street filled with theaters and a concert hall, would attract a varied clientèle, and allow him to diversify his cooking. Scotty even remembered noticing a school a block away, before he arrived.

The facade corresponded to his idea of what his restaurant would look like in his dreams. He had stepped inside not sure what to expect. Lately they had gone from disappointment to disappointment. At first sight, the surface area matched the blueprints he had drawn in his mind-not too small, not too large. His enthusiasm had grown stronger with each step: the kitchen area and its glassed in section, the dining room the right size to create conviviality and the small office on the right that would be practical for the administrative side of things. The real estate agent had played a surprising card, when she had led them to the back of the kitchen. Up a flight of stairs, they had found themselves on a landing. She had opened the door to an apartment, explaining it could be transformed. By pulling down some partitions, they could create a wide room that could serve as an extra dining room for the restaurant for special occasions: banquets, wedding receptions….

The second he went back to his car Scotty had tried to call Kevin on his cell, but voice mail had picked up. Someone was dodging calls. Never mind! A good shower would divert his energy and attention for a short time.

He sent a text while walking to the bedroom. “Come home quick, I’ve got great news! Love Ya!”

Quickly, he pulled his shirt over his head, and threw it on the bed, disregarded his pair of jeans the same way. Something moving under him, made him sprung on his feet. He froze in utter astonishment.

“What’s going on?” a sleepy voice asked.

The dim light issuing from the bathroom cast small shadows over the bedspread, insufficient to notice the form of a body resting under the covers.

“Kevin? I didn’t know you were here. I called but you didn’t answer.” Scotty grabbed his clothes from the bed and folded them neatly. “I didn’t mean to wake you. I’m just going to take a shower. I’ll keep it down.”

It was only after he calmed down a bit, having decorated his future restaurant three times in his mind while under the shower, that he risked approaching Kevin. His impatience to share his excitement surpassed the possibility of enduring Kevin sleep-deprived grumpiness.

“Kevin?” he said in a hushed voice. As he lied down next to Kevin, Scotty realized the incongruity of the situation: a Walker-and Kevin in particular-taking a nap at this strange hour of the day. Anyone else would be making dinner plans. “Are you all right?”

Kevin turned sleepy eyes in his direction. “Sorry. I was so tired, I could hardly stand.”

“Don’t apologize. How was your day?”

“Exhausting!”

“I imagine. I hardly see you in bed at this hour, except maybe when you’re sick.”

“Oh, really!” Kevin smiled a cocky smile that had Scotty smile, too. “I do remember you and I in bed at this hour. More than once.” His voice sounded rougher and lower than usual.

Thanks to the obscurity, Scotty’s blush passed unnoticed. He did recall the early stages of their relationship, when touching was more important than talking and anything else.

“I’ve been working like a drudge all day. I helped Kitty with the moving-”

“-oh, it was this morning! I completely forgot!”

“It’s okay. Jason came, and together we managed. With all the medical equipment required, there was no other option, and since Kit doesn’t want to move out of the ranch.... It’s all she has left, you know.”

“Well, at least, we can take comfort in the fact that Kitty and Jason help each other.”

Kevin nodded, his eyes closed, the pain still vivid. “Anyway, I was stuck two and a half hours in traffic before I could go to Mom’s. We ended up cleaning stuff from the attic, and blew up the fuses. I let her deal with it, I had to pick up Paige and Coop for Sarah. She had some important meeting with the lawyers about Narrow Lake. All this on an empty stomach.”

“Wow! A rough day indeed!”

“It’s not all. I need to tell someone. And you can keep it to yourself, right?”

“Of course, Kevin. What is it? You’re getting me worried.”

“I think Justin wants to go back.”

“Back?”

“To the war.”

Scotty felt that any word of comfort he would say would not be enough. He just squeezed Kevin’s hand to give him strength as if to say ‘I’m here.’

“I’ve cried so many tears in the last few weeks. For Robert, and Saul and even Holly! I don’t think I have anymore tears in me.” He paused, an instant. “Justin survived the accident. He went home alive twice. He will come home alive one more time,” Kevin added with such strength and ferocity that it sounded more like a statement than a wish.

“Things have changed. He’s married, now. He won’t leave Rebecca here alone.”

“We didn’t matter back then. She won’t either. It’s beyond anything. An urge you can’t fight.”

They stayed silent. The sadness painted on Kevin’s features made Scotty aware of a reality he hadn’t dared look in the eyes. Kevin’s exhaustion had more than one origin. More than physical, Scotty feared it might also be psychological. He promised himself to be more vigilant: if Kevin showed the slightest little sign of depression, he would talk to him about going to a therapist. It could only be a good thing.

He leaned over to place a kiss on Kevin’s forehead. About to go leave him alone in the soothing atmosphere of the bedroom, he heard what sounded like a protesting moan.

“Where are you going, Scotty?”

“Fixing us dinner. You need to eat. No wonder you’re tired!”

“Would you stay here with me a little longer?”

Scotty hesitated, but he didn’t find the courage in him to refuse. He crawled back on the bed, sitting next to Kevin, his back resting on his pillow.

Kevin dozed, opening his eyes and smiling at him, faintly, then closing them for a few minutes, and opening them again, as if torn between dreams and reality. Scotty loved the sight of a sleepy Kevin, he found him more handsome and peaceful than ever in such moments.

Kevin reopened his eyes and caught Scotty staring at him. “Thanks for staying with me.”

“You’re welcome.”

Kevin tried to concentrate his remaining strength to propel himself on his back, and sit next to Scotty.

“You don’t have to wake up, honey, if you want to sleep longer.”

“You are like a father to me!” He pressed his hand on Scotty’s and their fingers entwined, upon Kevin’s silent call their lips did, too. “I do feel a little hungry.”

“How surprising!”

“Would my favorite chef and husband prepare me a little something to eat, please?”

Scotty felt relieved, half an hour ago, he thought Kevin on the verge of a breakdown. “My pleasure. Only before, I need to tell you something.

“Sure.”

Scotty felt his hand trembling, his heart pounding. What would be Kevin’s reaction? “I found the restaurant.”

“Oh my God! Scotty, that’s great!”

Kevin's enthusiasm came as a surprise.

“Hear me out, first. The restaurant doesn’t come alone. There’s a huge apartment upstairs, with two large bedrooms. It would be perfect. No commute, no parking trouble, less gas needed, therefore we’d save money, and when we find the perfect house, we can rent the apartment, and get a regular income out of it. What do you say?”

Kevin didn’t say anything, and Scotty had trouble reading his expression. Kevin stood up and left the bedroom.

“Kev! We can buy the restaurant, and keep looking for a house, if it matters that much to you,” Scotty said, following Kevin right away.

Scotty found Kevin by the door, his car keys in one hand, his jacket in the other. “Let’s go! I’m dying to see your future restaurant.”

“It’s too late for a visit, now.”

“I know! I’ll just peek through the windows. And since I’m starving, we’ll go spy on your future competition.”

"Sounds like a good plan! But, how can you be so sure, it's my future restaurant?"

"I'm not. It's the first good news in a while. I just want to embrace it." He took Scotty's hand, and approached him, gazing in his eyes for long minutes. "And embrace you."

He stepped even closer and did.
