Perhaps this comes a bit late in the debate, but I have something to point out. The comparison that you gave between running for governor and believing left-handed people shouldn't drive, and a beauty pageant contestant and her beliefs on gay marriage, has one important flaw. People vote for a governor based on his or her beliefs because they might be in a position of power where their positions will have a significant effect on public policy. While Miss USA might receive media coverage, she has no direct effect on the outcome of gay marriage policy, and thus no power to act on her beliefs. We might not agree with her, but she has every right to answer a question honestly. Let beauty pageant winners be judged on their swimsuit walk, and let relevant policy makers be judged on their stance on gay marriage.
