Along came Ike

With the modern era of up to the millisecond world wide newsbites, it is easier to be thick skinned than to be a caring human being. I like to blame information overload for a lot of this, but I think Joseph Stalin actually summed the sentiment up better than I could anyway. "A single death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic." Some facts are ( Read more... )

Wow. It really does change your perspective when something like this happens to you personally, or to someone you know.

Up here in Ottawa, there was some brief talk about the idiots who tried to weather the storm in Galveston, but that was about the full extent of the hurricane talk. The destruction was just taken for granted. Talk of increasing gas prices continues, however, as if that's somehow more important than the death and destruction that precluded it.

I'm really glad to hear you're okay. That's a unique experience that you've been through, and while I'm sure you didn't need the hassle of a damaged roof, I'm glad that was the worst of your suffering from the storm.

I don't know how long I'd survive if I had to hole up like that with no power and no gas. Storms like that are fortunately unlikely up here, but not impossible. Perhaps I should stock up on canned food.

Well, unofficially, I think part of the problem with Hurricanes is that give them too friendly of names. I mean, someone runs up to you door and yells "Ike is coming!" you would probably wonder if you need to set out some cheese and crackers. Ike, Camille, Andrew, Katrina . . . not very threatening. However, if you were holing up in your house and someone banged on your door and yelled "Butt-Kicker Jones is coming!" you'd be more likely to feel an urge to visit relatives elsewhere ( ... )

We actually went south to avoid the storm. My house in Marshall (sell, damn you, sell!) got a few branches in the yard, but there were a lot of old trees that were uprooted.

Dang, though, sorry to hear that.

Glad to hear you and your family are all right.

As for us, we're fine Petie. I'm flying to Disney World on monday and after I get back we'll start calling the insurance company and roofers. A few hours with a chainsaw and some raking and the place will be as good as new. Plus we managed to give the fridge a real thorough cleaning for once.

Hope your house sells soon.
