“He broke up with me!”
The main character of this story comforts his best friend. Let’s give the main character a name: Lu Han. He is currently comforting Byun Baekhyun, his best friend who is currently crying like he’s high on drugs. He was making a scene, but it didn’t matter for Lu Han at the moment since he knew that Baekhyun loved his boyfriend so much and it breaks his heart to know that. “It’s alright Baek, there are a lot more guys to meet. It’s not the end of the world.”
It isn’t really the end of the world; 2012 is over and done. It’s already 2013 and winter break is nearing, the first snow is even about to happen. “Who am I going to spend Christmas with, then?!” Baekhyun starts hitting the table with all of his strength, and Lu Han had to hold both of his arms to make him stop. Everyone was starting to yell at the both of them and Lu Han had to apologize to all of them for the sake of his best friend.
“Byun, you have your best friend who never left you alone up to this! Am I really nothing to you ever since you got with that jerk?” Lu Han was hurt, to be honest. He never focused on dating anyone; he only focused on his studies and cared for his parents and Baekhyun only. Whenever Baekhyun had troubles, Lu Han was always there and this is what he gets in return?
Baekhyun looked at him menacingly. “Don’t call him a jerk.” He says quietly, and Lu Han just had enough of the shit. Lu Han stands up from his chair and grabs his bag, not before giving Baekhyun a salute of his middle finger before leaving the cafeteria.
“Okay then, if he just keeps on protecting this guy, he would look stupid. Wait, he’s already stupid.” Lu Han yells as soon as he’s out, and he was talking to himself with a very loud voice. “He’s so stupid to not even realize that I prioritized him more than going out with a guy because he’s family!” He rambles on and on until he reaches his locker.
Lu Han started to curse loudly while opening the locker, but he didn’t notice the person he hit while doing so. A loud bang stops him from incessantly cursing, and then he turns to the right and sees a guy on the floor.
Instantly, Lu Han’s anger diminished and he chants “Oh my god, I’m so sorry” while helping him up. While he was helping the guy up, he could hear the guy groaning out of pain and he suddenly felt so embarrassed. When he checked to see if the guy is standing upright, he placed his hand on the guy’s forehead and saw that it’s getting red, which made him feel guilty even more.
The guy opens his eyes and observes the stranger checking on his forehead. Sure, he might have a fringe to protect his precious forehead but he realized that it isn’t enough because it hurts like hell. He blinks and takes in the appearance of the boy right in front of him but he freezes when he sees the stranger’s eyes focus on his own and he stops.
“Have I met you before?” He asks out of nowhere and Lu Han raises an eyebrow at him. “I’m sorry, I beg your pardon?” Lu Han wasn’t sure if he heard it right, but the guy just blurted something.
The guy sighs, and repeats himself. “Have I met you before?”
“I’m sorry, but as far as I know, I don’t even know your name.” Lu Han was right though. He doesn’t even know anybody like the guy he just hit with his locker door. He remembers everyone he met, so he is sure that he doesn’t know this guy. He raises an eyebrow at the guy but the latter is so stubborn that Lu Han doesn’t even know what kind of drug he took before stepping foot in this school.
Maybe because this guy has screwed a lot of girls, so no doubt that he’ll think of Lu Han as one of those people because he does have that femininity in his face but Lu Han’s a virgin.
The guy’s face suddenly turns into disappointment, and nods. “I’m sorry, I think I have mistaken you for someone else.” He looks down and Lu Han smiles at the guy’s cuteness. “It’s alright, maybe that person you’re looking for is someone not from here.” Lu Han still comforted him, and the guy likes that, but he really has that feeling in his gut that he has met the guy before.
Is it déjà vu? He didn’t know.
On perfect timing, the bell rung and Lu Han immediately runs past him, but he did forget something.
The guy suddenly notices a thick book on the floor. He picks it up and sees that it was a journal of the stranger, which widens his eyes.
Lu Han must go home, but he can’t find his journal in his locker.
“Goddamn it!” He exclaims as he scans his locker for the nth time only to see nothing at all and it irritates him. He must have misplaced his journal in one of his classes, and someone might have got it and read everything written in there. Thinking about it, he feels like crying because his entries are quite personal and he didn’t want his privacy to be invaded.
Just as he was about to cry literally, he saw his journal on the floor and he grabs it in an instant, hugging it in his arms. He was already crying, but his dramatic moment had to be ruined by a low chuckle and he turns to the left only to see the guy from earlier. The guy just smiles at him, and he looked handsome that tears no longer started to form in Lu Han’s eyes.
If Lu Han’s life was an anime, maybe his eyes would have turned into hearts and everything sparkly would surround the guy.
“It fell earlier, so I kept it with me instead but I didn’t read your entries, if that’s what you’re worried about.” The guy says, and Lu Han sighs out of relief. “Thank you so much, I owe you a lot.”
Right before the guy would walk past him, Lu Han grabbed him by the sleeve of his long sleeved V-neck shirt. The guy turns to Lu Han by surprise.
“What’s your name?” Lu Han asks, and the guy chuckles. “I should be the one asking you that.” The guy replies, but the look in the other’s eyes screamed seriousness so he pursed his lips in a thin line before answering, “I’m Oh Sehun. Wu Shixun is my Chinese name, if you would ask because you have a slight accent in your Korean. I can tell that you’re Chinese.”
Lu Han’s mouth is left agape. How did he know?
He shakes his head and smiles at Sehun-or Shixun. “I’m Lu Han.”
They both shook hands and Sehun-Shixun rather, smiles at him but there’s a slight hint of a smirk in it. Maybe that’s the way he smiles. “I’ll be looking forward to seeing you in these halls, Lu Han.” Then he left like the wind, and Lu Han felt like his breath was taken away, and the sense of familiarity Shixun gave along with the wind.
He turns around to Shixun’s direction and sees that he isn’t around anymore, but he feels his heart beating fast.
Have I met you before?
--
It’s weird, how after that meeting Lu Han never saw Shixun again but he still heard his name around the halls as Sehun because he’s the co-leader of their school’s dance troupe. Quite known for his flexible moves, every girl seemed to fall for him but Lu Han is devastated to know that he has never seen Shixun dance at all.
It has been two years ever since he met that once transferee, now a famous dancer in their school and it’s already senior year. During this day, Lu Han knew he ended his friendship with Baekhyun because he’s just done with his bullshit, and he got to lose his journal but ended up found by Shixun anyway. And yeah, he hit Shixun in the head because of his locker door.
By now, Lu Han has a new friend: Do Kyungsoo is his name. Quite the guy who doesn’t speak much, but he’s a trustworthy guy and he studies well even if he proclaims that he doesn’t need to study to be successful. It’s quite ironic, right?
Right now, Lu Han is just writing down in his journal and he doesn’t want to be disturbed. Winter break is nearing again and the first snow is bound to happen tonight, so he’s excited to spend time with a cup of coffee and his laptop in Starbucks. He likes writing stories, anyway.
While writing down his feelings about the day, he hears a loud bang of a table and he looks up from his journal to Kim Jongin who’s standing up in his chair and a triumphant grin. Lu Han knows that Jongin is a kind guy, actually humble and not using his popularity to his advantage. He’s the dance troupe leader and he often hangs out with Shixun, but today it seems like no one cared about what he’s going to say.
“May I call the attention of someone named Lu Han?”
The mention of his name widens his eyes, and everybody is looking at him like an apple is on top of his head and their eyes are arrows. He gulps; he didn’t want attention, not like this. “You’re the person who caught my best friend’s eyes for a while-oh wait, for years now.”
Who is Jongin’s best friend? Zhang Yixing, if Lu Han’s not mistaken.
Maybe Shixun, but nope, that’s impossible.
Jongin took one step up from his chair and onto the table he’s on. “I’m not using my popularity to grab your attention, but I want to do this for my best friend.” Such a caring friend, Lu Han thought as he smiles. “Just so you know, he is absent because he’s suffering from a cold but hey, he’s recovering! So wherever you are right now in this cafeteria, I hope you hear this.”
“Please do make the first move to see my best friend again; it would be a great Christmas gift.”
As the day passed by, Lu Han saw Yixing around the corridor and realized that he wasn’t the person Jongin mentioned earlier.
It was Shixun, and Lu Han was stunned; it wasn’t because of the realization that Shixun liked him, but because of how he didn’t do anything yet to make him swoon. Not that he’s assuming, but he wonders why Shixun hasn’t done anything to meet him again.
Walking the way home, Lu Han had to find comfort in his coat since it’s already getting cold. The snow hasn’t fell from the sky yet, and he wants to witness it before he enters his home which is why he’s walking slowly. He looks up at the darkness of night and he only sees the moon shining bright, but it gets colder by the second.
He sighs, a puff of visible air coming out of his mouth and keeps on walking until he reaches the crossing lane and stops.
Shixun was on the other side, waiting for the light to turn green. Jongin said he was sick earlier, but why is he outside with a hoodie on and a gaze that’s downcast? The light turns green, and Lu Han finds himself running to Shixun. He doesn’t know why, but he feels that aura of familiarity and embraces him tightly in the middle of the lane. It looked like a cliché scene in a romantic movie, but Lu Han did not care.
For some reason, he just let that feeling of missing the other take over his thoughts. He just lets the realization of Shixun liking him take over for a while.
Shixun was shocked at this but he knows that it’s Lu Han, so he hugs him in return. “Where have you been, Shixun? I-I needed to see you, just once.” He hears Lu Han whisper in his ear, and Shixun finds himself smiling when he realized how sweet Lu Han sounded; as sweet as honey.
“Life’s just being an ass, Lu Han.” He replies as he pulls away in order for him to see Lu Han, and his heart starts to feel warmth as he gazed deep into the other’s orbs. “But at least I get to see you.”
“I have never seen you since then.” Lu Han felt a lot of emotions filling his gut, and he just had the urge to let it all out. “I never saw you in the crowd, or the hallway, or the cafeteria. I have never seen you dance in the gymnasium.” He sighs, taking a breath and looking down but Shixun chuckles while holding him closer.
Shixun smiles, while staring into Lu Han’s eyes. “I like it that way. At least I grab your attention without needing a crowd around us.”
The first patches of snow fell on them, and Lu Ha has to say that this is the first time he shared the moments of it with someone outside of his home. He’s happier that it had to be with Shixun.
Maybe he’s feeling the same for Shixun too; that’s what Lu Han thought as he gazed deep into his eyes. He wanted to ask why, but he keeps his mouth shut since it’s obvious that the other looked so down. “Are you near your home now?” Shixun asks, and Lu Han finds himself shaking his head, and then replying, “I was just finding someone to go with to the mall.”
As a result of that, Shixun and Lu Han decide to go together to the mall. They enter an ice cream parlor that no longer had to people; there was one hour left before the mall closes. Lu Han’s eyes brighten up as he sees the variety of flavors that he could choose from, and Shixun smiles as he looks at him.
Shixun also takes a look at the variety of flavors right in front of him, yet he doesn’t feel his stomach growl. Instead, he feels like shit when he looks at the ice cream flavors because he’s lonely; but at least Lu Han’s here, he thought.
“Which flavor do you want, Shixun?”
He turns to Lu Han who’s bringing out cash from his wallet and he turns back to the ice cream. “Cookies and cream”, he says as he eyes the flavor; it’s his favorite ice cream flavor after all. Lu Han grins at Shixun. “Is that your favorite?”
“Yeah, it is. Why?” Shixun asks back, and Lu Han eyes the flavor with such determination to get it. “It’s my favorite flavor too!”
Is this destiny?
They both blush, but Lu Han immediately orders with a red face. Shixun just stood next to him until they got their ice cream and started eating it as they got out of the parlor.
“By the way, why did you not attend school earlier?”
He turns to Lu Han with his usual monotonous face. “I just…didn’t feel like going. Well, what with all the things that’s happening.” He scoffs, and Lu Han just keeps quiet on his side. “I want to escape reality for a while and be on cloud nine.”
Lu Han nods, completely understanding what Shixun meant. Of course, he did know how reality’s becoming much of a mess lately; just like him, Lu Han wanted to take a break from life and be one with nature-
Okay, he sounded like a Buddhist.
“I get that a lot; don’t worry, I want to do the same. Make the most out of winter break and go to-well, maybe England for a change. Or go to some tropical island and feel the heat like summer at the moment.” Lu Han starts to babble and Shixun finds himself smiling while listening to him. “I just want to be free, for once.”
Shixun grins. “Then let’s go somewhere and be free together.” Lu Han looks at him with widened eyes with a faint hue of red on his cheeks. This is the second time he got red in the face today, Lu Han reminds himself while looking at Shixun who is still grinning at him.
The ice cream on Lu Han’s hand is starting to melt; the molten form is already seeping down his hands as he stares at Shixun while being red in the face. Shixun still finds him mesmerizing anyway.
“What? Does the two of us, in an island drinking coconut juice not a good idea for you?” Shixun asks, and Lu Han shakes his head. “Of course, I’d like that! I can’t say no to you.”
Shixun smirks cockily. “Then let’s do that-summer, want me to book the tickets by tonight?”
“How am I even sure if I’m going to see you again before that?”
Shixun shrugs his shoulders, then suddenly grabbing his handkerchief to wipe off the liquid trailing down Lu Han’s fingers. With a slight hint of assurance, he replied, “I’ll meet you again, that’s for sure. By that time, I want to kiss you under the mistletoe.”
Lu Han isn’t sure if Shixun is serious about that or not.
Walking the way home along with the snow falling, Shixun walks Lu Han home.
From time to time, he would glance at Lu Han who’s staring down at the ground. He might call himself an illusionist but from the very moment he saw Lu Han during his first day as a transferee, he felt his heart beat fast and it was a familiar kind of beat. He never felt that way, as far as he remembers and Lu Han reminds him of someone he knew before.
Those webs of thoughts are cut short when he’s now in front of Lu Han’s home. “I got to go.” The other whispers and took a few steps forward, opening the gate with his spare key and Shixun was supposed to leave by now but his feet stayed rooted to the ground. He just can’t seem to leave Lu Han alone.
Lu Han finally opens the gate and turns to Shixun with a smile. “Thank you Shixun. I really appreciated you walking me home, and getting to experience the first snow with you.” He bites his lower lip, and Shixun finds it cute. “When can I see you again?”
Call Shixun a weirdo for being a firm believer in destiny, but he does. He barely remembers what the term is called, but he just shrugs it off. “I don’t know, but I’m looking forward to that.”
He starts walking backward, and waves at Lu Han before turning around and walking away. Now Lu Han is standing alone by the gate and smiles to himself, tugging his coat closer to him but his smile falters when he realizes the other piece of cloth he’s holding.
Shixun’s jacket.
Lu Han starts looking for any sign of him, but realizes that he’s no longer there. He might get cold. Since he doesn’t want to get scolded, he just enters the gate and brings Shixun’s jacket along with him while the snow falls and attaches itself to Lu Han’s blond hair.
--
A few days after, it was the last day of school before winter break and Shixun was back. He usually sported his smile according to the girls in class, but he looked really happy, some reaction unexpected from him. Usually, Lu Han never got to see him but he’s fine with that because he keeps in mind what Shixun tells him.
At least I grab your attention without needing a crowd around us.
He smiles whenever he remembers that, so he just lets himself be satisfied with the memory. Lu Han closes his locker door and turns to his right to see a tall guy right in front of him. He raises an eyebrow at the student he doesn’t know well but the latter just smiles in a friendly manner.
“Do you remember Byun Baekhyun?”
Lu Han nods.
“Well, I’m his new boyfriend Park Chanyeol, and I would like to talk to you.”
“So you never talked to each other since then?”
Lu Han nods. “How could I even approach him without me knowing that he’ll be treating me like I’m some maid; someone who would tend to do what he asks me to do if called?” Lu Han had made a point, and he isn’t going to let himself be taken advantage of. He’s better than that.
“Baekhyun never treated you like that.” Chanyeol protested, and Lu Han wanted to slap his face. “He did, and he’s acting like the victimized sheep?! Wow, fuck him.” By now, Lu Han’s ears were now red but it was thankfully covered due to his headphones and he just wants to punch the living lights out of Baekhyun now.
Chanyeol just stayed rooted to his chair, sitting down while fiddling with his fingers and Lu Han just felt bad. Why did he even have to end up with some stupid ass? He sits down again and faces Chanyeol in silence, calmed down and safe enough to talk to. “I’m sorry for hearing that, Lu Han.” The giant says quietly and Lu Han felt guilt, so he taps the table in moderate strength and Chanyeol looks up at him with sadness in his eyes. “What stays between me and your boyfriend; it’s all over and done with now. No matter what you do to bring our friendship back, you will end up disappointed.” Lu Han talks sense in Chanyeol, and he didn’t want the latter to squeeze himself in their problem. Chanyeol nods, but he still smiles and stands up from his chair.
“I got to admit my boyfriend is someone hard to understand, but I love him; I can’t leave him.” Lu Han understood how love turns minds around. Love makes people understanding and kind, the feeling makes them selfishly overprotective of their other half.
Shixun.
His name pops up in Lu Han’s head and looks up from the chair only to see Chanyeol no longer there. He bites his lower lip, while looking down at his right hand.
Lu Han opens the door to his home and he sees his parents looking at the scrapbook of his childhood. In reflex, Lu Han runs to them in the living room and crushes his parents in a hug so that they won’t take a trip down memory lane about his embarrassing childhood.
His ears and cheeks were red from blushing, and his mom laughs. “We’re talking about a part of your childhood, wherein you got lost in the supermarket.” Lu Han raises an eyebrow at that because it was never mentioned to him at all.
“Okay, please tell me all about it because I don’t remember anything at all.” Lu Han says calmly and his father smiles, ruffling his son’s hair.
“Well, you were around five and we lost you in the supermarket. You never left our side, but maybe because we kept on walking round and round, you got lost.” His father starts, gulping his spit down his throat. “We were looking for you, and when we did, we saw you with another kid. You and that kid were hugging each other.”
Lu Han blinks his eyes at that, and he starts to look at the scrapbook in his lap. He sees a picture of him as a kid, and he sees the other kid with him. The face looked familiar, and he looks closer but is shocked to make out someone’s face right through that kid. They were both grinning at the picture, and it made Lu Han’s insides warm up.
He smiles, and looks at his mom who had a knowing smile on her face. “I forgot the other kid’s name, but I know that his name started with the letter S. That’s all I remembered back then.”
“What was the surname of the kid’s parents?”
“Mr. and Mrs. Oh are the kid’s parents.” His father answered, and Lu Han’s eyes widen.
His mouth hangs open at the sudden revelation.
”Have I met you before?”
Lu Han stands up from the sofa and immediately goes up toward his room, opening the door forcefully and dropping his bag down the floor. He checked the box beneath his bed, and when he grabs it out, it was the box containing the items that remind him of his childhood.
He opens it and looks for some items that he might have gotten from when he was five. He has scavenged through and he sees the only item that’s untouched: a necklace and bracelet. Lu Han takes a look at the paper sticking the two items together and sees what’s written there. In bold print by a permanent marker, it wrote:
By a boy named Sehun who also got lost in the supermarket like me. I asked him, “When can I see you again?” He just grinned at me and replied, ““I don’t know, but I’m looking forward to that.” I’ll wait for him-oh, I want to see him again!
“Oh shit, Shixun.” Lu Han covers his face with his hands as he drops the necklace and bracelet to the ground. “I have met you before.”
--
It’s officially winter break, and tonight is Christmas Eve.
Today is the dance showcase of their school, and Lu Han can’t attend. He has dinner with his family but he wants to see Shixun too. He didn’t know what to pick, and he’s now sitting down by the window and seeing the snow pile up while the moon is shining brightly. He hugs his knees closer to his chest, slightly sad.
“Son, are you okay?”
He turns to his mother who had a hand on his shoulder and a warm smile. Lu Han just nods, and then looks back at the window.
Usually, Lu Han would be a happy person whenever it’s dinner during Christmas Eve, but it’s different this time. Knowing now that he met Shixun before and not remembering it makes him feel guilty. He wanted to blame his blurry childhood memories, and run to him while saying that he knew him even before. Lu Han is even wearing the necklace and bracelet Shixun-known as Sehun before by little Lu Han-gave to him.
“That boy is crowding your thoughts lately.” His mother suddenly speaks up and he jumps from surprise, to see her sitting down in front of him with a heartwarming smile. “I can tell that you share something deep with him.”
Lu Han sighs while shaking his head. “Mom, we barely see each other. I don’t know why, but now that I know that he’s the boy I was with back then, it makes me feel so…happy, but life’s just being an ass, mom. Tonight is the dance showcase in my school, and I have heard that he’ll perform there but I’m not even doing anything at all.”
His mom squeezes his cheek a little, and Lu Han smiled a little. “Son, do you believe in destiny?”
Lu Han nods. “I kind of believe whatever they say.”
She smiles and places her hand on top of her son’s, caressing it. “Destiny’s making you grab the chance to get to see him, but he’s making it quite a challenge. He wants to twist things around, and he only does that when he’s in the mood for seeing something exciting.” Lu Han raises an eyebrow at his mother. He got what his mother is talking about, but he doesn’t understand what she’s pointing out.
“Now go to him and grab that chance, that’s what your heart says anyway.” They both get up from the couch and go towards the door. Of course, as a mother, she makes Lu Han wear two coats and a scarf to keep him warm. When he’s ready to go, she opens the door and kisses her son’s cheek. “Go see him.”
Lu Han is really thankful, so he hugs his mother before leaving and looking for Shixun.
He’s already in front of the school door, so he just opens it and enters. The whole hallway is empty but the music is booming, and Lu Han is sure that Shixun is there. He’s supposed to be there, Lu Han tells himself and right before he could open the door to the gymnasium, he saw Jongin.
“Oh hey there, you’re Lu Han right?” He asks and Lu Han nods, fixing the sleeves of his coat. “Are you looking for Shixun?” Lu Han nods again, absolutely out of breath to even talk properly.
He had to walk from his home to his school, and it’s a really long journey. Now his legs are burning and he just wants to find Shixun. Jongin smiles apologetically at Lu Han. “Sorry, he already left straight after our performance. He wasn’t in the mood to celebrate.”
Lu Han felt like a brick from above hit his head. He was so sure that Shixun was going to be present but he left immediately and Lu Han immediately felt like shit. He closes his eyes, trying to stop himself from losing his chill but Jongin puts a hand on his shoulder he flutters his eyes open again, seeing Jongin smile at him warmly.
“If you want, I can give you his cellphone number and the address to his home. It might help.” Lu Han just nods and says his thanks, reaching for his pocket when-
Holy mother of god. He didn’t bring his cellphone, damn it.
Lu Han was so close to losing it. “I-I didn’t bring my cellphone.” He stutters and Jongin says that it’s okay, writing Shixun’s address in a sheet of scratch paper and giving it to him.
Right before leaving, Jongin chanted a “Go Lu Han, go get my bro!” Lu Han was quite thankful for the support from a popular yet humble kid.
Just a few more steps, Lu Han.
He doesn’t know if he’s already near Shixun’s house, but he sees a bunch of houses down his street. Jongin didn’t even say anything about what his house looks like, and the only thing that Lu Han can depend on is the address written within the piece of paper.
“Okay, it’s near, I just need to walk a few steps more.” Lu Han mutters to himself while looking at the piece of paper in his hands. Step by step, he could hear the snow on the ground squish because of his feet, and he kept on walking.
Honk.
Without knowing, he was pushed to the ground by someone and the piece of paper gets stuck on his eyes, but he could feel arms wrapped around him. He doesn’t even know what is happening, but he removes the paper from his eyes and looks up into a gaze staring down at him.
He blinks again, to make sure but he sees the familiar tuff of black hair. Lu Han looks at the brown eyes staring back at him and he smiles.
“Have I met you before?” Shixun asks, and Lu Han smiles, not even bothering about the cold ground.
“I have met you before.” Lu Han replied, and Shixun grins.
“No wonder why you looked so familiar to me, Lu.” Shixun says softly, and Lu Han laughs. It’s the first time Shixun had a proper conversation with Lu Han, and they’re sitting by the fire inside his home. “You were the kid I was with back in the supermarket.”
Lu Han shrugs his shoulders, covering himself more underneath the blanket he’s sharing with Shixun. “I didn’t realize it at all; I thought I remember everyone I met, but I forgot you and that’s quite offending.”
Unconsciously, they move closer until their shoulders are touching and their hearts are beating fast. Some patches of snow are trapped in Lu Han’s hair, so Shixun just caresses his hair with his fingers to remove the snow. “You don’t need to blame yourself. We were children back then; memories of it will be blurry.”
Lu Han smiles while staring back at Shixun but it falters when he sees the slight sadness in his eyes. “Why didn’t you celebrate with the others after the dance showcase?” He asks, and Shixun shrugs.
“I didn’t want to celebrate Christmas Eve, to be honest.” Shixun answers and Lu Han looked over at him with concern. “My parents had to go back to their hometown for some job; it’s a medical mission since both of them are doctors. They said they won’t get to celebrate Christmas with me so I felt sullen about it. Celebrating Christmas with friends like Jongin won’t really mean a lot to me as much as my parents.”
Shixun’s such a good guy, Lu Han thought as he eyes the person next to him.
Setting aside the sudden sadness that filled the atmosphere, Shixun smiles again. “By the way, again, I am Oh Sehun-you can call me Wu Shixun because that’s my Chinese name.”
“I am Lu Han.” He introduces himself again formally and awkwardly, which makes Shixun chuckle. “Why are we introducing ourselves again?” Lu Han asks, and Shixun swore to the heavens that the other looked so beautiful. His mouth is left agape by the beauty, but he stops thinking about it because he wouldn’t really mind at all staring at Lu Han for a lifetime. “You know, we never talked to each other normally-but that’s how destiny plans it for us.”
Lu Han elbows Shixun’s side with a grin, and the latter just winks at him which makes him feel all fuzzy. “Have you ever heard of serendipity? A series of chance encounters that are beneficial for two people; she’s destiny’s little sister for me because she always messes up her big brother’s design on how people meet. You know, like whenever Destiny is taking a nap from creating too many designs, Serendipity would get her crayons and doodle-destroy rather, her brother’s works.”
Lu Han smiles at the sudden personification, and the way how Shixun lights up at telling the story, and the feeling of how right this night is. Tonight seems perfect. It is perfect for him but not really a nice night for Shixun; his parents aren’t around, and he isn’t even in the mood to join along with his friends for the night. But still, tonight seems perfect.
“But behind those doodles contain a confusing whirl of events that could turn things around. It’s either those two people end up together or if they’re the ugly-looking doodles she made. You get what I mean by the latter.” Shixun turns to Lu Han with a monotonous face and he nods. “Yes, the ugly-looking doodles…they will end up with some other people.”
Shixun replies “exactly” while snapping his fingers along. “She doesn’t like doodling whenever it’s summer, or spring. Serendipity loves destroying Destiny’s works whenever it’s autumn and winter.”
“My mom told me that Destiny is the one who messes up his works too.” Lu Han says quietly. “We all have different perceptions about them, Lu Han. If Destiny is the person destroying his design too, then in my opinion, that happens when he’s drunk or high as hell.” Shixun states and Lu Han laughs too much, but at least he’s happy, Shixun thought.
Unconsciously, they’re closer than usual while keeping themselves warm by the fire and a whole lot of blankets covering them. Shixun turns to Lu Han who’s staring at the fire with seriousness as the embers spark up above, until it smokes out the chimney. Tonight wasn’t perfect at all, but now that Lu Han is just here makes it nice.
“Do you want to have dinner at my home?” Lu Han asks out of nowhere, and Shixun raises an eyebrow. “What?” Shixun asks back, and the other just smiles. “Dinner, at my home; I’ll bring you along so that at least, you get to celebrate with a family.”
Lu Han gets up from the floor and helps Shixun up.
“Are you serious? I’m going to be a persona non grata in your home.” Shixun whines as they get out of his home, but Lu Han just grabs his hand with a grin. They’re both fully clothed to keep themselves warm on the walk to Lu Han’s home, and hand in hand, they started walking.
“My parents know you, Shixun.” Lu Han replies with a laugh. “Take note, you’re the kid who hugged me in the supermarket.”
The door opens, and Lu Han didn’t even need to knock for it. The person who appeared was his mother with a heartwarming smile on her face, and Shixun knows that he’s too tall to hide behind Lu Han so he just stands there frigid. “Oh, good evening to you!” Lu Han’s mother greets and Shixun just bows.
“Good evening, Mrs. Lu.” He greets and the other’s mother laughs. “Don’t be so formal with me kid, you and my son have met before anyway.” She lets them in and Lu Han enters first, but Shixun doesn’t let go of his hand as he enters. He knows that the worst of all is facing a dad other than his, so he gulps as he’s brought to the dining area and he’s face to face with his father. His mouth is agape, because his father looks strict and it’s not even funny.
It’s nerve wrecking.
“Good evening, sir.” Shixun greets and bows ninety degrees. Red was starting to fill up his cheeks and neck, but Lu Han’s father doesn’t notice it as he looks up. His father had no expression on his face; just a stare that makes Shixun cringe.
If I could have said no to Lu Han then I wouldn’t be so fidgety over his father at the moment.
“Oh, you have grown up so much!” Mr. Lu exclaims and immediately smiles at him kindly, much to Shixun’s surprise. “I almost didn’t recognize you, Sehun.” He pats Shixun’s shoulder and the other’s eyes widened in surprise.
He didn’t see that coming actually.
Lu Han immediately tends to Shixun, and holds him by his right arm. He looked like he was ready to push his parents out of the house; Lu Han was wearing a forced smile. “At least I’m here before dinner, so let’s eat!” He exclaims and Shixun found him cute while pouting at his father.
Shortly after, they started eating; the main course was roasted chicken, and Lu Han was ready to finish it in one go, which makes Shixun chuckle while calmly eating. Even if his family wasn’t around, at least he gets to eat with Lu Han and his family; at least he wasn’t lonely.
After having a full stomach, Shixun was called by Lu Han’s mother and he looks up from his plate in surprise.
“Do you still remember the time when you gave Lu Han a necklace and bracelet?”
She asks, and Shixun finds the memory blurry but it was quite familiar. Lu Han, who was right next to him, grabs his hand and they both stand up from their chair. “Mom, I’ll just bring him to my room.” He excuses and in the next second, they were both dashing up the stairs and he sees the hallway of Lu Han’s home. The color of teal fills the wall with a dash of gold as its borders. It didn’t look too glamorous, it was simple.
Lu Han didn’t let go of his hand as they walked towards a room with lots of stickers that show pictures of beautiful landscapes-nature, specifically. Shixun just stares at it, amazed at how the door is covered with the pictures and Lu Han opens the door, going inside while still holding Shixun’s hand.
In front of him, are lots of pictures from his years of childhood up to the present; there was also a map of South Korea on the corner, facing his bed with bed sheets of the color silver. His room looked like the room of a traveler’s, and the atmosphere is comforting.
“Wow, your room’s nice.” Shixun comments; Lu Han faintly murmurs a “thank you” as he finds something on his study table. Shixun immediately walks toward the bed and sits down, taking in the look of Lu Han’s room. Everything was messy, but in a good way.
Suddenly, Lu Han springs up from the ground and with a grin, he walks toward the bed and sits down next to Shixun while holding a box that’s colored white. Shixun raises an eyebrow.
It was quiet for a while.
“Are you going to propose to me?” Shixun asks, and Lu Han’s eyes widened. He slaps Shixun’s arm while the latter yelps in pain. “God, I’m not going to ask you to marry me; what’s up with you?”
Shixun shrugs it off instead.
Lu Han opens the box and he sees a bracelet and necklace that are tied together with a piece of paper with something written; like as if it was a part of Lu Han’s memories.
It wrote, I have met him before. Shixun looks back at Lu Han who’s smiling endearingly while looking at the items. “What is that?” He asks.
“When we were five, you gave me this.” Lu Han says, and takes them out of the box. “I dreamt about it last night; you told me that when we grow up, I have to wear both of these so that when you find me, we’ll be able to be…” He trails off, and Shixun was waiting for what his five year old self said. “Together.”
Shixun blinks, and the memory suddenly returns to him. He grins, and remembers the five year old Lu Han who was hugging him tight during that day. Cheesy as it is, but it’s destiny…or serendipity-or maybe they’re the same, whatever.
Lu Han makes Shixun place his palms out then he places the accessories there with his own. Shixun didn’t know why Lu Han was doing this; what is he going to do next?
Lu Han smiles, while tucking a stray of hair behind his ear. “Let’s start new memories, shall we?” He suggests, and Shixun nods a bit too eagerly. “But you’re going to wear what I gave you.” Shixun states, and Lu Han agrees. They both look at the precious items, then at each other again.
Without hesitation, Lu Han turns around and Shixun puts the bracelet aside first. He opens the small lock in the necklace, then quickly holding both of the edges as he puts it on Lu Han. The other looks at the charm attached; it was a deer necklace. He smiles while holding the charm, but he knew that there was a bracelet still aside.
Shixun grabs the bracelet and he sighs frustratingly. Lu Han turns around to look at him and sees the other look sad. “You can’t wear this just yet; I need the little screwdriver for it.” He says dejectedly but Lu Han was okay with it, at least he gets to wear the necklace first, and Shixun was here.
“We have the same bracelet by the way. Mine is just like a bangle.” Shixun mutters, while looking at his right wrist; a bracelet that’s almost similar to what Lu Han should have been wearing, but it wasn’t entirely closed on Shixun’s wrist since there’s no screwdriver needed. It was like a bangle indeed.
The night was quiet while snow falls from Lu Han’s window. Shixun and Lu Han just found silence comfortable, since they had each other in the room anyway. Shixun still feels bad that he can’t make Lu Han wear the bracelet, but the latter was cool with it. He just really wanted to be with Shixun.
“Remember when I said that the next time you’ll see me, I would love to kiss you under the mistletoe?” Shixun asks, and Lu Han remembers it, which makes his cheeks flush red. Up until now, Lu Han can’t really take him seriously but now that he gazes deep in to Shixun’s brown orbs, he was serious.
Shixun was serious about it; like the Taken movie serious.
Lu Han was still in doubt. “We don’t have any mistletoe, Shixun.” Okay, maybe he should have rephrased that. It sounded like he wanted to kiss him, but to be honest, he really wanted to. Lu Han wanted to kiss Shixun.
“I am sure your parents have one.” Shixun enthusiastically declares, and Lu Han’s eyes widened in horror. “Wu Shixun, don’t tell me you will-“
He was interrupted, with his mouth agape. “I’ll be right back.” Shixun says then rushes to the door and exiting the room to get the mistletoe. Lu Han wasn’t able to gulp properly, like something was stuck in his windpipe. In less than a minute, the door opens and Shixun holds the mistletoe in his hand, and Lu Han knew that he was definitely Taken movie serious.
Shixun puts the mistletoe at the back of Lu Han’s door, then observing it a little bit if it’s good enough to put there. He nods, and turns around to take Lu Han by the hand. “Is this your first kiss, Lu Han?” He asks, and the other replies a “yes”.
Well, the next thing that happens is he now pinned against the door and he can feel himself getting hot in the face. They were so close and Lu Han just had to hold on to something; so he pressed his hands on Shixun’s broad shoulders. “Don’t worry, it’s my first too.” That was the last thing he said before slowly closing the distance between them.
The kiss was heavenly. It was not like the first kiss he expected to be awkward or a bit chaste since it was their first but it was just right. Their lips were definitely moving against each other, but there was no movement of tongue; they had no idea about that yet.
From Shixun’s hands pressed against the door, his arms are now encircled around Lu Han’s waist; while the latter’s arms are now wrapped around his neck. After losing air to breathe, they pull away but their faces were still close. Lu Han finds himself smiling; Shixun does the same too.
“I love you, Han.” Shixun says and presses a chaste kiss on Lu Han’s cheek.
“I love you too, Shixun.” He replies.
What a wonderful Christmas Eve indeed.
As they fell asleep, Shixun and Lu Han were holding on to each other and never letting go. They knew that there are a lot more things to come for them, they just couldn’t wait.

“Mom, where are you?!” A kid sobs while walking around the supermarket, because he lost his parents along the way. He stayed by his parents’ side anyway, so why did he even get lost?
Couldn’t it be that they left him alone now?
The thought of it makes the kid break down in tears, so he just sits down there on the ground, crying for his mom and dad to come back for him. What was unexpected is another sob coming from a kid too. He looks up and sees another kid who’s actually crying too but is looking for his dad instead.
It looks like they’re on the same boat as of the moment.
When the other kid stumbled his way to him, he was no longer crying but there was snot coming out of his nose. “Are you lost too?” The other kid asks.
“Yeah, and I know that mom won’t leave me.” The kid says and he knew it because he knows that his mom loved him very much. “She’ll come back for me; I just need to wait.” The other kid just sits down next to him, and they both stay there sitting down for a while.
The kid looks at the other kid. “What’s your name?” He asks, and the other kid suddenly smiles. “I’m Sehun, what’s yours?”
“I’m Lu Han.” He replies, and they both grin at each other.

It was morning-indeed Christmas day. Lu Han wakes up on his bed but Shixun wasn’t by his side. His messy blonde hair was taking over his vision so he cards it away with his fingers. There was just a note, so he grabs it with narrowed eyes.
His vision adjusted to Shixun’s handwriting, and it wrote:
Merry Christmas Han and don’t worry; I’ll go back to your home to spend Christmas with you all day. Just wait for me, and go get some rest first, okay?
--Wu Shixun
He smiles, and he hears the door open. Lu Han looks up from the note to see Shixun there, with a huge grin on his face. He just really wanted to smack that face with his lips if he could do that the whole day.
“Good morning, Lu Han.” He greets, and Lu Han gets up from bed only to be enclosed in his loving arms.
Oh, Christmas has never felt so merry.
