It's even lower than spitting in someones face. About as low as you can go. *sigh* I'm a Greek, as most of my friends know, and I KNOW how awfult an insult that is.
If we weren't civilized (well, mostly) that would be an action of war, or very nearly.
I'd suggest that getting shoes thrown at him was getting off lightly, considering that he does bear primary (though certainly not sole) responsibility for initiating an unnecessary war & social disruption that has resulted in the deaths of at least 50,000 noncombatant civilians (& quite possibly as much as twice that many).
The fact that he's still unimpeached and the President of My Country does not prevent me from wishing that the shoe-throwing reporter's aim and pitching-arm had been just a little bit better.
Now I'm wondering if we'll ever find out what happens to that reporter -- so far, it's unclear whether he'll be turned over to the Iraqi legal system, or just be Disappeared into the American Secret Prisons system.
After he's done being the President of these United States I'd like to catch him in an alley. No problem there, but it disturbed me to see such disrespect from a journalist, and it felt like it was personal, even though, he has an accounting due him, and soon. Should have been impeached and more, but hasn't been. So from now till Jan, he stands for US. I know... I don't like it either, but I cringed all the same.
Well.... yes, he stands for Us. But we, by way of our elected representatives in Congress, have allowed him, his cohorts, and his Party, to do some utterly-reprehensible things.
Sadly, I cannot think or claim that we do not deserve such insults -- perhaps absolutely, or perhaps as long as the major people responsible are not brought to account (in terms of long prison sentences or excecution). To put it bluntly, I think we (as a People -- as well as as an Administration & Legislature) have fucked-up royally, and need to have the courage to expect and accept the fact that this will be brought to our attention, vigorously, many times in the future.
