So yeah. Just got the word in while at work that myself and some other people might possibly get laid off sometime between next month to the end of the year so that military cooks can take their positions back in the dfacs and civilians are being booted out ( Read more... )

Now isn't the best time to join the military, at least not like it was a four-five years ago. If you want to get the full college benifits you'll have to go active for at least four years (in the Army at least). As for health care... Well, it's "free" but it's also bottom barely and using it is STRONGLY discouraged depending on what MOS you apply for. Going on profile can ruin your career. Not only that, but the military still has that "suck it up" mentality.

Well when it happens then that's most likely the route I'm going to go with anyway, good time or not. And since I've done four years of JROTC and hopefully be able to get a LTC's letter of recommendation, I should be good if I do enlist... well finance wise anyway.

Nice to know some parts of the Army hasn't changed but from what I've seen on what's going on in these mess halls lately, it looks like a lot of new privates are just having their hand held the entire time of basic-- of course it could be different since I'm looking at it at the civilian perspective.

As for MOS, I'll try out for MP... worst I can be placed in would be infantry, I'd imagine. But this does remind me to stop by a recruiter's office and take the ASVAB test sometime in the future.

MP is one of the worst jobs ever, man. You can do better than that.

Any other suggestions? I'm definitely not going to go for Mechanic, Engineer or Chemical, that's for sure.
