“We’re not calling it ‘it’ the whole time…”
“You just did,” Laura’s sleepy voice murmured from the pillow next to him. It was almost one o’clock in the morning, and after a very stressful day she was finding it impossible to get to sleep. In fact, she was on the verge of airlocking her dear Admiral.
Bill frowned and adjusted his pillow as he turned to look at her. “We need to think of a name,” He couldn’t get to sleep without discussing the issue at hand, it was occupying his mind too much to allow sleep. “Don’t you think he or she should have a name?”
“Bill… IT isn’t even developed enough to be considered a foetus,” Laura groaned as she rolled over and wished, not for the first time, that she hadn’t even told him. “Now go to sleep or shut up so I can go to sleep. Please!”
In light of the fact that she could attack him at any moment, Bill fell silent. But staring at the ceiling could only last so long. There were so many things to think about and so many things he wanted to discuss with her. Sure it was a really bad time to talk about anything, but he was excited and didn’t quite understand why Laura wasn’t.
“Stop it…” She growled at him, not bothering to open her eyes.
“I didn’t say anything!”
“I can hear you thinking,” Laura sighed and finally gave up on sleep. “Let’s get it all out right now. If we talk about every tiny detail you’re thinking of then maybe, just maybe, I can sleep for an hour before Tory calls and wakes us both up.” She sat up in the rack and crossed her arms, waiting for him to start talking.
They simply stared at each other for an excruciatingly long moment. Laura sure as hell wasn’t going to start the conversation that was preventing her from a good nights sleep, and Bill was trying to decide whether to ask her if she even wanted to go through with it. He slowly sat up, moving away from her as much as he could without falling onto the floor. Although it was likely he’d end up there anyway. “Do you want this baby?” He asked quietly, refusing to look away from her.
“How could you even…”
“Laura,” He said firmly, cutting off any protest she made to try and convince him otherwise. “Do you want this baby?”
She held his gaze, glaring at him for only a moment before looking away. Somehow she seemed to shrink back against the wall, as if she was trying to find a way out. Eleven hours was not enough time for her to make the decision he was forcing upon her. She needed him to just leave her alone and stop talking about children and families… and especially names. The last thing she wanted to do was name the thing if she ended up not wanting it. But then she couldn’t get rid of it. Ironic really, her attempt to save humanity was working against her. It was all too much. She needed more time, just to adjust to it all. Adjust to the fact that this thing was growing inside of her, something they had created, and would change their lives. Possibly ruin their lives. Or Lee’s if he was left the guardian of a sibling in years to come. She probably didn’t even have years to live. If they were indeed on the path to Earth she could die after it was born. Then again, even if she did live she was already too old to be having a child. Who’s to say raising the child wouldn’t kill her? And Bill was even older than she was. She definitely didn’t want to be left on her own to raise it, and couldn’t imagine doing that to him. Of course, that was just their personal troubles. Tory was going to have a fit if they told her. The press would have to be told at some point and then the public would probably push for them to get married. Marriage she didn’t even want to think about.
It was only when she felt Bill’s arms around her suddenly that she realised she was shaking. She’d let her arms drop and her hands lay quivering in her lap as she leant into him. “I don’t know what to do…” Her voice came out in a whisper. She felt so scared, unsure of what path to take.
“It’s okay Laura,” He pressed a kiss against her head in an attempt to calm her down. “Just breathe it’s going to be okay.” He was worried she would make herself pass out if she didn’t calm down soon.
“We can’t… do this… Bill…” She told him as she tried desperately to catch her breath. Concentrating on her breathing for a moment, she found herself beginning to cry against his shoulder. “I do want to… but this is too much… we’re trying to save the colonies here, we can’t sit around and play happy families. And that’s assuming that both the baby and I survive the actual birth…”
“Laura…”
“What’s worse…” She pulled away from him. “If we go through with this and I do survive, I don’t think I could handle it if we lost the baby.”
“You’re playing the future version of the ‘What If…’ game Laura,” Bill pointed out softly. “You’re using hypothetical situations to feed your doubt, and make you question what you have. Tomorrow we’ll see Cottle together and see what options he has for us. But whatever happens, we’re together. You’re not alone in any of this, and I promise you that you never will be.”
“You can’t promise…”
“Laura,” He whispered, kissing her lips softly. “I promise I’ll always be with you.”
She smiled softly as she gazed into his eyes. In the end he always knew what to say to make her feel better. She only wished they’d met years ago on Caprica. But that was another ‘What If’ and it just wouldn’t do to dwell on those sorts of things. “Thank you,” Laura lightly touched his cheek. “I really do love you.” She said as they lay back down together, his arms still holding her close.
“I love you too,” He kissed the back of her neck and smiled to himself as he felt her relax. “What about Emily?”
“Oh shut up!” Laura laughed, grabbing the pillow from under her head and whacking him with it.
