I think the thing with fanfic and books is that they offer different things and sometimes you want one more than the other. Fanfic can give you more about some characters than the official things do (eg Sirius and Remus) and it gives you different interpretations of them. Sometimes it can give you a new and/or different appreciation of the original, or of particular characters or relationships in the original.
I like novel-length fanfic because you get to spend more time in that universe with those characters.
I'm less tolerant of basic writing idiocy these days too. I think it's partly because I've learnt how to write better so I can see the mistakes more. And also because I can think of better written things I've read in the past.
I haven't read any fanfic (except your lil C/C) in forever. I too have the problem of never being on my own. Rivka has given up going to school altogether, so she's with me all day, every day. I don't like to leave her for long because I never know what kind of mood she's going to be in, so the only time I have now is when I drive Rochel to school and come back, which is 20 mins each way.
Like you, I do love my children, but there comes a point, especially when you're the kind of person who likes some solitude.
Basically, I'm feeling your pain on that one! I'm currently looking for a monastery I can go on a weekend retreat to. My friend Laura has said she'd have them for the weekend, or at least one of them.
I do have wistful thoughts of joining a closed order sometimes...
