Things to do before I emigrate to Canada

Jan 07, 2008 19:22

Now that I can officially say that the move is happening this year (early August, for those who have missed the billion references to the date) I've started a list of things that I want to accomplish before I leave the country. I thought that it might be a good idea to a) list them here and b) post an account of the event when I do it. I shall try ( Read more... )

12. Climb the Camera Obscura in Oxford.

I feel I should really know what this is...

Ditto.

I googled for camera obscura oxford, and it didn't know anything particularly informative.

I suspect it ought to be the Radcliffe Camera. It's not open to the public though: you need an Bod Card (Oxford University Library Card) to get in. Or whatever the contempary equivalent is.

You are indeed correct, it's the Radcliffe Camera. And bother, guess that one needs to be crossed off the list! And a new excuse for including Oxford on the list is needed...

Well, if you're looking for company in London (and it's either a weekend or I can get the time off), then I'd be delighted to do one or more of the following with you before you go.

1. Take tea at Claridges.
2. Go on the London Eye.
5. Visit the British Libary.
7. Visit the Natural History museum and walk past the bloody huge dinosaur in the lobby without a blind-fold.
8. Eat dim sum in Chinatown.
9. Watch a session of the Commons.
13. Get together with convention/fandom friends.
16. Visit London Zoo.

Thankyou :-). If it's any incentive, you can get a train to York from Staylbridge, and I was going to suggest it as a day-trip for Jen.

Jen's supposed to be coming over for my graduation :-).

BTW - there's a tyrannosaurus in Manchester museum, if you want to get over your dinophobia that way!

I wouldn't bother with the London Eye if I were you. But York Minster is worth seeing.

My parents came to Canada from England in August 1978. They've never regretted a day of it (and my dad won't even go back to visit anymore.) Good luck!

Heh, London Eye is as much about conquering my incredible fear of heights (and stopping my parents mocking) as it is about the actual London Eye. York Minster I visited as a kid but my overwhelming memory is that that's where I had my first ever migraine. I feel the need to repair that damage.

I know that going to Canada is definitely the right thing to do. It's scary, but also exciting and I just have to reassure myself that seven months is long enough to do everthing without getting overly confident about how much time I have before I need to do things like organising a removals firm.

Good luck with the move to Canada this year!

And that's a very nice list you've compiled there. Lots of places I wouldn't mind seeing myself sometime...
