Yesterday was the 200th anniversary of Poe's birth. I was twelve when I first read The Tell-Tale Heart, and it blew me away. Left me breathless. It wasn't the first scary story I read, but the first one from the point of view of a killer/madman, and also the first short story that impressed the hell out of me.
