December Talking Meme: Jackie and Rose Tyler

With Doctor Who everywhere for the anniversary, literally on a global level, it's perhaps easy to lose sight of the fact that in 2005, when the show was relaunched, it was by no means guaranteed it would find a new audience. Especially considering the previous attempt to bring back Doctor Who - the movie of doom - had failed miserably. And the ( Read more... )

Ah! I find this so interesting. Also the point about Davies writing about adults and their parents. I think it does ground the companion characters a lot for me, giving them background and a place in the world rather instantly.

Also, I am really curious about what your quibbles about how Rose and her arc ended. I came late to the party and so never really thought about it, because there were four seasons to watch!

Rose: her exit started something which I don't think is a good New Who tradition, to which, that something horrible traumatic must happen to force Companion and Doctor apart. As opposed to, you know, the Companion simply deciding to do something else than travelling with the Doctor, which is what happens in most cases in Classic Who. (Where a tragic Companion exit was the exception, not the rule.) This isn't an RTD exclusive thing - Moffat did it, too, with Amy and Rory. The sole New Who Companion who gets to leave on their own volition is Martha. But with Rose it was the first time this happened. And I hadn't liked what led up to it, either, the Rose/Doctor relationship becoming a straightforward romance. I would have preferred it if Rose, after meeting Sarah Jane and after Reinette, realised that the Doctor and she were seeing their relationship in two different ways, and that rather than setting herself up for frustration it was better to leave and get on with her life (in short, not dissimilar from Martha's exit). My other Rose ( ... )

Davies did something similar with Queer As Folk and the various parents (and quasi-parents) we see on that.

True. He really has an interest in featuring/exploring this type of relationship.

You're welcome. Here's another exchange for you from The Writer's Tale, from December 2007 (when Moffat started working on planning s5 and Davies was busy wrapping up s4 and preparing the specials, and they needed to make sure one would flow into the other):
Russell! When you've some time, can we have a chat? I've a few practical points that I'd like to talk over with you. And since I'm starting to think about this for real (blimey!), I'm realising that I probably shouldn't hide myself away from spoilers like the whimpering fanboy that I am. Is it okay if I read your finale scripts when they've done, just in case there are any crossovers with the nonsense currently in my head? (...) One other thing, which I've been meaning to say. You're always so kind and positive, you'd never let it show, but I realise it can't be easy to hand over a show like this one - so please understand, I appreciate that and I'm hugely grateful for the chance that I'm getting. I'll try not to be some irritating Scottish bastard measuring up your house for ( ... )

A nice analysis, and it's good to be reminded that RTD and Moff generally worked harmoniously together. I'd love to know RTD's view of Day of the Doctor!
