...for a few days, at least, but not yet able to watch either the Breaking Bad finale or the Once Upon A Time season premiere (it's only a matter of minutes for the later, though), and at some point I'd love to get my hands on the season premiere of The Good Wife as well. I read Carrie back in my King phase in early high school, and I think it was the first time I'd ever seen a depiction of bullying an overweight girl as A Bad Thing. As an overweight girl myself (who did not have many friends but was thankfully in a much better position than Carrie), it struck a chord, and when I finally saw the movie last year I was pretty pissed off. Not only was the opening scene atrocious--had these people ever even seen a girls' locker room?--but there's just a different dynamic between a bullied girl who is fat and a bullied girl who is rail-thin. Carrie the Brian de Palma film put me off for this reason as well - nothing against Sissy Spacek, but she really looks nothing like Carrie White. (BTW, same thing about The Neverending Story - Bastian is fat in the book, which is important to his characterisation a reason why he's bullied, but of course in the film he's a pretty thin boy.) I have other problems with the film as well, but ignoring this really important thing about its heroine was key.

I loved Misery for the same reasons as you, but my favourite would have to be The Stand. Yes, it petered out towards the end, but I loved the first half with a fiery passion because of the people he created and the way they all reacted to the paradigm shift of the world nearly ending.

Good luck getting into the Stephen King event! I've always loved his books too.
