Ugh

I hate bullies. Internet bullies who believe they're propagating "social justice" while doing their bullying are a particularly revolting suspecies. God knows I have my own criticisms of Moffat's writings, but death threats? With an added low of also going after twelve-years Caitlin Blackwood, who plays young Amelia Pond? What she saidNot that this ( Read more... )

What is actually going on? I've done a quick google and it's not clear. Sorry to ask you to explain this nasty thing, but you're a person on my f-list and you seem to know. I thought that was possibly the easiest solution to my not knowing.

As far as I know, roughly this:

1) a couple of people accuse Moffat of being a vile misogonyst, accuse him of having ruined DW and add links to tumblrs wishing for his death or suicide for good measure.

2) Moffat shuts down his twitter account

3) Amanda Abingdon (Martin Freeman's partner) makes the mistake of asking how one can like DW and Sherlock yet hate Moffat on her twitter (yes, wrong question, but the reaction is, you guessed it)

4) the girl who plays Amelia also makes the mistake of trying to defend Moffat

5) the whole thing gets reported at ontd as "man who ruined DW can't handle criticism, flounces off"

Thanks. The Amanda Abington thing was particular unclear since I had no idea who she was.

I didn't know before, either. Here is her reaction to this whole thing.

Was there a specific trigger for people calling him a vile misogynist, or is it better not to ask?

I don't think a specific scene was singled out. Mind you, of course you can write founded critical observations on various Moffatian tropes in connection to female characters. But tone matters, and then to jump on the women who disagree with you and threatening to kill them is not helping your cause.

Oh, yes, I'm familiar with the general critique, I just didn't know if something had happened on the new Who season that people were specifically up in arms about. And, seriously, the phenomenon of attacking creators (and anybody who sticks up for them) personally is really obnoxious and tiresome.

I think it was in particular Amy having angst over being infertile in "Asylum", and the anti-Jenna Louise Coleman "all Moffat's companions are identical sexpots" thing.

I'm feeling very disillusioned with fandom of late. Obviously the very worst elements are the ones sending anonymous hate, but I've seen a fair number of people accusing Moffat of flouncing and then writing lengthy screeds about why he should be engaging with people who title their tumblrs STFU Moffat. There is of course nothing new under the fandom sun, but the twitter aspect does make it particularly personal for those being attacked.

And every day I don't regret not having a twitter. Bah, Humbug.

Fandom is infuriating sometimes. God knows there are fannish creators I dislike, but I express that by occasionally muttering crankily about them, not by sending them death threats. Some people need to take a serious step back.

Same here. I know how much one can feel let down by a beloved book/show/film/whatever series going in a way one feels wrong. But THIS is the worst ever way to respond. There is nothing that's not wrong about it.
