Ha! Fantastic. I love how the seeds of the later discord are present, as well as what attracts them to each other in the first place -- the fact that Jedediah both knows everything with Charlie is fake and to prove a point, AND that there is always something real behind it, and can exploit both even as he feels exploited by both. I love the detail about only realizing later about the chambermaids: privilege which Jedediah eventually thinks about. And it reminds me, for that matter, of Susan Alexander (not a chambermaid, but Charlie's proof he can not just make it with but also help those who don't have his money or Jedediah's station).
