Oh Really? ( Wednesday Edition)

I know I've writtten and posted a rant about this very subject, the trivialization of the term "Nazi" in English, and now I can't find it again. Did anyone by any chance preserve it in their memories? Anyway: this post reminds me just how much I'm irked by it again. So do several of the comments. On the other hand, you learn something new every ( Read more... )

I know, the trend re: American remakes isn't encouraging, which is why I wasn't going to watch it - until this news. And yes: put out or shut up, writers.

I said elsewhere my main problem is that I've only ever seen Liu in glam roles so it's hard to picture as the very not glamourous Watson. Sherlock on the other hand...

Amen to the end of the coy gay subtext! I'm also equally tired of the only dynamic male/female characters getting to play is the "will they or won't they" romance, hopefully this show will find something different.

For what it's worth, she's currently playing a police officer on the very not-glam Southland, and apparently doing it very well.

That's what I'd heard! So hopefully the producers will resist the temptation to glam up Watson.

I'm not anti-glam!Watson per se, but I think the cop show role indicates they weren't necessarily thinking glam when they cast her. Also suggests she may be deliberately be in the market for non-glam parts to show her range, etc. Anyway, rooting for HER if not for the show.

I'm finding myself torn as well - I have a horrible feeling it'll be used to make a bog-standard will-they-won't-they romance thing... but I could be wrong, and the reactions of some people, which seem to border on "NO GIRLS! GIRLS ARE ICKY!" is horribly annoying to me.

"zomg! our holy slash pairing RUINED BY GENDERSWAP!" reactions

Made all the more hilarious by the fact that Lucy Liu is out and bi. But hey, actual queer people aren't half as important as imaginary ones.

And while I'm at it: you know what else annoys me? The whole nudge-nudge, wink-wink approach in various so called "bromances". Sherlock and the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes actually being prime examples.

Precisely. I have to admit, I'm honestly miffed at Mark Gatiss about Sherlock in this regard.

I'm not only miffed at Mark Gatiss but very confused that apparantly parts of Sherlocok fandom call him "Godtiss" and imagine he's the one fighting a desperate fight to "keep Sherlock and John gay" against Moffat the het obsessed. I mean, I did not imagine Gatiss going "there are these 13 years old girls writing slash, how amusing and girly of them, but seriously, these guys are straight!" in an interview, did I?

Also, good to know about Lucy Liu (I didn't until you told me)!

On the other hand, I do feel it's maybe a bit unfair for people to put too much expectation on Gatiss, because I remember full well how Russell T. Davies got the constant barrage of, "So does this mean the Doctor will be gay now?" questions when he started writing for Doctor Who. So I have some sympathy for the fact that he might well want to avoid being perceived as the gay creator pushing his gay agenda when these things are raised. It's a difficult position to be in.

Absolutely, but there was no need to ridicule slash writers en masse, either, which he did. Anyway, I don't think much of fandom noticed?

And while I'm at it: you know what else annoys me? The whole nudge-nudge, wink-wink approach in various so called "bromances". Sherlock and the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes actually being prime examples. Look, it may have been fun when Gore Vidal wrote his Ben Hur script like that in the 50s, but, current American Republican candidates for the presidency not withstanding, theoretically we live in more advanced times. Asexual Holmes is fine with me. Gay Holmes is fine with me. Bi Holmes is fine with me. Straight Holmes is fine with me. (Ditto for Watson.) But what is so getting old is the endless playing coy and runnig "gay! only not!" gags. Either go for main text or find another running gag, I say.

Yes and yes and yes!!! I'm so sick of this "gay/not gay we still hate on gays bull-crap!!" Gimmie a homosexual relationship or don't give me one at all, but you can keep this crap. I hope its good, sadly American remakes of British shows tend not to be, but I hope it is.
