If I didn't know that the entire season was in the can before the premiere, I would have assumed that Deb finding out had been tacked onto the end of the season when the disappointed reactions from fans and reviewers started pouring in. Showtime is already starting to back down from the decision to renew the show for two more seasons, having announced that those seasons are probably - but not definitely, because this is a channel that never knows when to stop milking its cash cows - the last, and that a big moment at the end of the sixth season - presumably, Deb finding out - would lead into that endgame.

Which, like you, is really not enough to tempt me back, especially not after having read this interview with the showrunner, in which he says that a) he has no idea what the deal with Lewis is, b) there was an explanation for how Dexter revived from the tranquilizer, but they decided not to include it in the episode because it didn't work aesthetically, and c) that people who aren't happy about the Dexter/Deb development are " ( ... )

Of course, given how poorly received this season has been, I'd be a bit surprised if he's still the showrunner for next season...

...wow. Thanks for that link -- it makes me feel even more secure in dropping the show. (Though, yes, a different showrunner may help.)

"Uncomfortable with love".... seriously? If he's that dumb, then no wonder this season (and the one before, but to a lesser degree) were so badly written. And I say this as someone who did and does ship the occasional incest pairing.

Watching Homeland is my New Years Resolution, I promise.:)

Word on Dexter. My thoughts here: http://local-max.livejournal.com/37201.html. But essentially they are the same as yours, in addition to a myriad of other complaints, which pale in comparison to the screwing up of the only potentially interesting storyline left.

It's such a shame, because I used to love the show, and all the characters (well, except Quinn). But it happened. And then it's better to say goodbye instead of hanging on for two more seasons and hate every episode.

I did too. I loved those first two seasons, especially, very dearly (and I liked season three a lot better than seems to be the consensus). But I've been uniformly annoyed by this season. I will miss Deb the most. :(

I agree that this season was a disappointment. I suspected it might be when, last season (which I thought was good, though less so than previous ones), they missed the opportunity to change the formula completely. Rita's death provided that opportunity; they could have had Deb find out in the aftermath, or done something else to shake up the Serial Killer of the Season pattern. But they didn't; they went back to the formula and milked it again, not once but twice, and by the second time (in S6) it had run completely dry.

I will probably give the show another chance, mainly because they have now changed the formula. Like you, my faith that they will handle the formula-change well has been shaken. It would have been strong post-S4, or even post-S5, but isn't anymore. But now that they've changed a basic parameter, they might be able to look at the show with fresh eyes.

To continue your Angel analogy: S3 was pretty rotten, but the show came back with a vengeance in S4. Cordy up in heaven, and Angel under the sea (& put there by ( ... )

It's true that season 4 of Angel was terrific and completely lured me back after I had almost given up on the show, and that s5, too, had a freshness instead of feeling stale. But the interview abigail_n quotes above does not feel me with confidence the showrunners realised they need to improve, or that this season was a serious failure.

Agree with most of what you say about this season - however, Deb finding out has to be a game changer, and I'm going to keep watching to see how they handle it. I'm hoping that Deb has more sense than to follow up on the therapist's idiocy - what I would love to see is a situation in which she's trying to bring him to justice but for some reason having trouble producing proof.

Re the tranquilizer - pretty sure he faked injecting himself initially, nobody he's used it on has collapsed that fast.

Well, if you find the quality gets back to the old level, feel free to tell me. There's always that hope, I suppose; but until I hear it has become true from you and other reliable sources, I won't watch again.

secondly, one of the many reasons why I appreciate the man is that he liked these kind of songs already when he was a teenager, along with rock'n roll.

Exactly. I've always liked Paul's version of "Till There Was You" that's on one of the Beatles' early records, along with the big band versions of their songs they used to include. Something for everyone.

Part of what made them so great was that they had this really wide range. In Hamburg, they even covered Marlene Dietrich's most famous song.:)
