We talked about the fanfiction competition he's started

How did I miss this? Hm, a quick search only brings up a competition for kids between 10 and 15 years. Is there another one for adults? (If not, shame!)

I was kidding you a bit, it's the one for kids I was referring to. No adult competition yet. :) (Otoh, see Jörg Kastner, book contracts for licencsed fanfiction might be in the offering.)

Hi! I'm really enjoying your Book Fair posts, and your mention of Perry Rhodan today startled me into commenting. *g*

Again, I decided against revealing the existence of slash. "At the next convention, include a panel in Perry/Atlan versus Perry/Bostrich versus Perry/Bully" would just have been too much of an outing of the fannish community, methinks.

I had to laugh out loud here. I'm quite sure KNF is aware of the existence of slash, but yes - there's something quite unmixy about slash and PR for some reason. I wish I knew why it doesn't seem to exist, despite the definitely not non-existent female fans.

Otoh, "more recurring female characters" is an old chestnut, especially since they do try in that regard, and there are in fact several.

The irony is that we actually had more recurring female characters for a while there in the 90s; there's been some backsliding there too. But you're right, they're trying. And doing better again lately too.

If you get the chance, and if it works for you, since I'm not sure how the BBC website works abroad, the North-West news went a bit Lennon-mad today.

I think it works at home for me - the BBC website that is - but the bandwidth available at my hotel is another matter. But thanks for pointing it out. Just posted my birthday essay!

You know, I have to applaud him for thinking that fanfiction is a good way to keep a dead author's works in the public conscience though. That's forward thinking.

Absolutely, and also the awareness that you have to keep younger readers interested instead of relying on old readers' fond memories and/or wish to present their grandchildren with the books.
