Stealing Fire and just one DW remark.

Firstly, the reason why there won't be a Doctor Who review today isn't because I didn't like the episode - I did! a certain scene involving Amy was incredibly moving, and I practically squeed every moment River was on screen! - but because it was the first part of the season finale, and because of its nature and all the set-up, I'd rather review ( Read more... )

Also I made the mistake of reading some other reviews who did one of my least favourite things, combining praise for the present with slamming of the past,

I do hope my post wasn't counted among those. I try to keep to the correct side of the line between thoughtful critical comparison and "slamming," but I will admit to being rather insecure about this sort of thing. :)

No, don't worry, yours wasn't! I wasn't thinking of "it's rather refreshing..." type of remarks but "after all the rubbish and the hateable..." type of remarks.

Good. I doubted it, but it's nice to have the reassurance. :)

And, man, I do know exactly what you mean. I tend to find those kinds of posts depressing, myself.

Also I made the mistake of reading some other reviews who did one of my least favourite things, combining praise for the present with slamming of the past, and if, like me, you happen to be fond of the era and the Doctor slammed, that spoils things for you, and not in the way River uses the word.

Not only that, these people are also overly hasty. The first parts of Rusty's finales usually were either great or at least far better than the second parts, so they should wait for it to be finished before they laud Moffat's superior skills.

Alas, I was so exhausted, I didn't understand half the episode. For instance, I variously thought Rory had always been a Roman, and Amy had somehow managed to turn him into her present-day boyfriend with her imagination, and then that he was an android like Bracewell. Thanks to the internet, I'm now better informed.I also thought the one behind it all was the Dreamlord, since the voice sounded an awful lot like Toby Jones, but again, my sleuthing powers probably weren't the best at that moment .

Your book review sounds very intriguing. I don't think I've read anything by Graham yet, has she been around for longer?

(Another fan/friend) It's her third published book. I had the honour of reading it as a work in progress and suffice to say I'm the one with Lydias pom-poms. She's bloody brilliant, that's what she is :)

There seems to be an assumption in certain parts of fandom that if you liked Rusty's DW, you hate Mottat's or if you like Moffat's then you must have hated Rusty's. I admit I've found this series a bit harder to get into and there are things about it I've been critical of, but it doesn't mean I haven't been enjoying it.

On a brighter note though, yesterday, I was contributing to a comment thread in which the other person and I disagreed about a lot, but were polite and in both cases were able to come away from it with a better idea of the opposing point of view. When fandom works well, it's great :-)

I look forward to reading your review next week.

Hooray for civilized discussion, indeed, and yes, the assumption of partisanship annoys me to no end. Can't one enjoy both eras? (As well as consider neither of them perfect.)

Meanwhile, I'm on pins and needles for next week, which is as it should be.:)
