Yeah, overall, I thought that was solid enough, but it didn't really wow me yet. I suspect I'm getting a bit jaded towards ominous attempts to hint at revelations that will Overturn Everything I Thought Before. I'm interested to see where they're going with everything, but I don't believe for a minute that they're actually going to make Gene the bad guy by this stage, so I'm hoping they're planning on throwing some other interesting twists in there instead of leaning too much on that one.
And yes, I was totally going to mention how much I loved Ray's little moment talking to Alex in her coma. I hope we get more friendship scenes with those two this year.
I thought it was marvellous that Ray was the first person to appear on the screen when we assumed it would be Gene again. In fact, I rather hoped the episode would turn out to be about Ray and Alex running the case together, and that they really would keep Gene out until the closing stages. But not much hope of that, I suppose.
Given Gene's "STAR" status in the show, there was not much hope for that, yes - he's really movie era William Shatner, isn't he? - but I was hoping for the same thing regarding the episode...
I like your take that Alex waking up from her coma and immediately going back to work is evidence of the unreality of that world; I usually hope it is real, but I had such trouble with someone who's been in a coma for two months just waking up and walking away.
My favorite "come back" plea was Chris's. He couldn't find grapes, so he brought a melon!
I'd quite like Faceless Guy to be Sam, but I can't see John Simm coming back to what isn't his show when he didn't want to do one that was his.
Me too, especially since it still makes "most romantic" hit lists on the radio regularly.

Still, I suspect Faceless Guy isn't Sam, though we might be led to think he could be. Young Martin Summers (whom Alex buried) is another theory, and I just seen someone suggest Gene himself at a younger age, with Jim's "you can't leave, you're defined by it" remark taken quite literally - Gene literally can't exist away from the preccint first in Manchester and now here. (BTW, a few weeks back I watched 2.1. and 2.2. with the audio commentaries, and during the scene where the Northern girl from the strip club dies while Gene holds her and comforts her our valiant author duo did say these type of scenes (with Gene holding the dying) are

Haha, I know, right? I was pleased with that.
