Pirates and links

Hm, I originally didn't intend to watch a fourth Pirates of the Caribean movie because to me, the driving force of those films was Elizabeth Swann's story, and Elizabeth has never been mentioned as being in it. (I'm seriously not that interested in Jack Sparrow. He's a good supporting character - with someone else as the lead.) Which actually works ( Read more... )

Hrm, but they cast Penelope Cruz as the female lead. Now I don't know what your opinions are on her as an actress, but the screenwriters say that she's the lead opposite Depp.

Now, obviously she's had some duds and some roles that were obviously for the money, but generally speaking I don't think she picks bad scripts. The Ian McShane news has just sealed that I want to see whatever this movie ends up being - at worst it'll be a lot of actors I like?

Penelope Cruz: I've only seen her in one film - Vicky Christina Barcelona - but yes, she's a good actress. Hm. You're right, this argues well. I's probably just the cynic in me assuming that they just want to milk Depp-as-Sparrow's popularity without having a story to go with. Who knows...

Cruz strikes me as much like Depp before he landed the first Pirates: people like her a LOT, and she has critical praise as a serious actress and under appreciated comedic skills, but it's obvious that she's been using the big commercial projects for money and going back home to Latin America to make less money in great films most people won't see. So I find her casting promising and intriguing, especially as she's the only character we know nothing about...

... I mean, the educated guess is that she's playing the female character from 'On Stranger Tides', but I haven't read it so I couldn't tell you if it was a good part or a bad part. And I don't think there's any real reason to think the novel will end up being anything like the movie - since they're plugging Barbossa and Sparrow broadly into the male leads.
