Sorry, had to use the quote because of its appropriateness. Bonus points if you recognize it; it's not from the three fandoms I'm going to talk about ( Read more... )

Thelma in Hex dies in the first episode but remains one of the lead characters throughout the show.

I totally failed at the Watchmen quote!

And I did vote for Nathaniel, with the caveat that I haven't seen season 3 of Dexter and didn't watch the first season VMars regularly. But, Nathaniel being such a favorite character of mine, I doubt he'll be displaced. I find Harry and Lily both very interesting too, though, so maybe I'm another one who likes these character types. (Incidentally, Mad Men, which I think you didn't watch past the first season, has used the ghost of Don/Dick's father once or twice, but the device isn't very prominent or used to very good effect, IMO).

Here's a Merlin/TW fic I thought you might like: Once and Future.

With the drawback that I've never seen a single episode of Merlin, that was a well-written story, thanks!

This made me think of Elfangor in Animorphs, first and foremost; he sets the entire thing into motion before he's murdered horribly. Then, of course, it turns out he's been even more, er, involved than it first seemed.

He eventually got his own book, though, which probably shifts the category a bit.

Then there are James and Lily. We hear a lot about them, and see into various memories, but we never get a whole, objective picture.

What about characters we don't know about in the first few seasons, but whose deaths become very significant once they're revealed?

James and Lily: ohhhh, interesting in between case. On the one hand, there is not a single HP book in which they aren't mentioned, otoh, there are volumes where they're not really important to current day events - Chambers of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince - and volumes where their impact on the current day characters is really crucial, like Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows. And as you say, we only get fragmentary pictures via other people's memories, they're not really around to speak for themselves.

(Sidenote: I saw a mention of Grindlewald getting cast for the DH movie, which makes me happy as it means they will in fact do Dumbledore's backstory instead of sacrificing that to the cut as was the case with so much backstory so far...)

Which characters we don't know about in the first few seasons are you thinking about?

We do get to see very different perspectives, at least.

I'm still a bit sad that we only ever got to see James as a bullying prat, when we know there were other sides of him and that he grew into a better person. I think there'd be less JAMES IS THE ANTICHRIST that way.

(Oooh, I'm glad, that was one of my favourite bits of the book. Maybe they'll turn all Harry's reading into actual scenes.)

I was thinking of NCIS, and Gibbs' wife and child. We start seeing flashbacks in season three, and it's fully explained in the finale, and we still get memories from time to time. (You can also look at earlier episodes and go "...oh" though I'm not sure if that was intentional.)

Of course, I started with season four, which was an interesting experience. It can be fun, watching series out of order, if confusing.

Oh, a flashback/memory to Mature!James would have been good for that reason, yes, though I wonder what it could have been about in order not to appear random. Hm, maybe when Dumbledore remembered the Barty Crouch trial, James could have been around doing something humane like taking care of the mother in the background, which wouldn't have distracted from the scene giving the necessary information for the plot but would additionally allowed the readers to see grown up James doing something decent.

(Given that there will be two movies, and thus way more screentime, I'm hoping for genuine scenes, yes.)

Ah, I haven't seen NCIS.
