Because the recent novel brought Dickens to mind, here's my absolutely favourite essay about Dickens as a writer, by George Orwell. Thank you so much for the link to the video of Amanda Palmer. That makes me wish that she would an entire CD with Kurt Weill songs. She just has the right voice for them. :)

I just spend a long while reading the Orwell essay and wishing that all my English classes were thta intelligent in their criticism.
