That Doctor Who rec was really, really good. Of course, being the occasional watcher that I am, I didn't get most of the references. I think that just made it funnier, though.

I have not read American Gods. I have a very good friend who brings it up periodically as the example of the kind of book she wants to write. I really should probably read it.

I'm glad you like the fabulous story!

Re: American Gods, it's probably my favourite of Gaiman's non-comics work, so I'm biased, but: yes, read it!

Not exactly how I pictured Mr. Wednesday but it clicked when I saw the picture and I thought, “ Yes, that`s him!“.
So looking forward to this!
I read American Gods having just been to the US for the first time and because of that very concious of how different it feels compared to Europe.
Had the same problem figuring out who Shadows cell mate really was while Wednesday himself was quite obvious for me because of the sentence you mentioned.
I`m all for people getting another picture of the Norse gods than the comic version *shudder* as I really have problems with those.
Haven`t seen any relevant movie fully because of it.
It also has side effects like people naming their dog Loki after the comics and getting the full blown trickster version that can open every door and drawers. ;-)

Serves them right. :)

I think Neil Gaiman wrote American Gods Just after permanently moving to the US, so that inside-outside effect was probably authorial as well. (Plus of course all the "coming to America" sections have that theme...)
