The book was better.

Casting has always bugged me. Love Denzel but reading the book I got more of a Ben Urich feel from that character... and Julia Roberts was nothing like the character from the novel, who was described as a bouncy blonde who was far more intelligent than what most stereotype women like her to be.

I read the novel once. I prefer the movie and I loved Denzel Washington in the role of Gray Grantham. Especially since he and Julia Roberts had such great chemistry. As for the leads not living up to their descriptions in the novel . . . that kind of opinion is nothing new in a movie or television adaptation.
