I'm very curious as to where people were from. In the US, I think this is one of those things that very much depends on your regional, economic, and class background. For example, I found in DC that celebrating your own birthday was thought lower class, at least any celebration bigger than going out to dinner with your significant other was crass -- the expectation being that of course dining out somewhere nice is something that "people" do at least once or twice a week, and that making a big deal out of it was showing that you weren't the sort of person who could expect to do this on a regular basis. It was being a tourist. Or being the kind of person who didn't actually belong in a nice restaurant.

However, where I live now there's nothing wrong with celebrating your birthday, especially a milestone birthday like 40 or 50, with a party. People do it all the time.
