wow, that little camera is really neat! but my question is... how hard is it to change the settings so that you get that dreamy image, or that tiltshift image... you know? they can't be the same camera, same setting, right?

I also wonder how hard it is to put together.

I'm going to assume some of it is mad photography skills since there isn't a lot of customization you can do to the camera. I really like the photos that Miyuki on flickr has come up with and since they're labeled as "Gakkenflex" I'm going to assume she didn't do any other tweaking and all of that selective focus effect was done in-camera.

From various sources it seems that the kit takes about 1.5 - 2 hours to put together, and that there are a few places in the kit, documented in some blogs, where certain screws or springs are mislabeled. It could be a challenge since it's all in Japanese, but the instructions seem to also have the IKEA-like diagrams so it might not be that bad.

yeah, I don't really understand how it's done in camera, you know? are there settings you can change on it? I'm such a camera newb.

I'm a huge photography newb too... There seems to be only the focus that you can change on the camera. Yet people are still able to take such amazing photos!

I'm not much of a photographer but this post made me interested in trying out a twin lens camera! Sounds like so much fun. XD

This website sells some neat trick cameras that I might check out instead of the ones from the Gakken series: http://www.fourcornerstore.com/

Gakken series sounds like fun over all though! Maybe someday I will buy a set too. :3

Yeah! Fourcornerstore is the one selling the $50 Recesky (Gakken clone), I think -- it's far cheaper to just buy the original Gakken magazine ($35 from cdjapan) PLUS you get the cool mook that comes with it!

I've always wanted to get into the plastic toy cameras like Holga and Lomography, but the high $100-$200+ price point put me off. With the Gakkenflex, it's a much cheaper entry point.
