Obviously, mature, intelligently written material has no place in the DC universe.

...Which, actually, isn't much of a surprise anymore. About all I can say about DC's current crop of storylines is that at least they aren't a 'Civil War' tie-in.

Yeah, 'cause isn't Civil War a Marvel thing? They're all Countdown to Final Crisis tie-ins.

I pretty much agree with you, but I think we should just be grateful that the book is still running and has a decent creative team on it. And you never know--perhaps they've got something planned for issue 250.

I don't know if you've read Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics, but there's a chapter about how the industry (with its lack of genre diversity) is essentially eating its own tail. I would be interested to know how well the the Countdown crossover is doing. I'm not reading it, and nothing I heard has really caught my interest (although there are some books spinning out of it I wouldn't mind reading, like Batman and the Outsiders).

I agree with you completely with Batman and the Outsiders - I'm interested in that one too, but I'm avoiding it on principle at this point.

The sales have been abysmal recently.

I guess it's to be expected. It was a mistake to end one weekly series and dive right into another. The Big Two always beat a concept into the ground when it's already on the verge of death. And crossovers are a delicate balancing act to begin with. Just because a couple crossovers were big hits doesn't mean "people like crossovers." It means the story was there ( ... )

See, Marvel has mastered the crossover concept. Do some stuff in various series leading up to a crossover - but not actually a crossover yet - and then do a crossover. One crossover. Then it's over. Done deal. Do some tie-ins while it's happening, for about four months, and then it's done, and people can go on with their lives. Oh, and Marvel has also mastered the idea that you shouldn't have to read every single tie-in in order to understand what the fuck is going on.

Whereas DC keeps doing this ongoing thing, which started back when Identity Crisis happened, back in, oh, late 2004 or so, and it just keeps going. It's like some sort of undead Energizer Bunny which won't stay in its grave/the back-issue bins. And if you're going to read any of it, you have to read all of it. And "all of it" includes about 20 different series, of which I have absolutely no interest in about 18.

And for this, they fuck with Hellblazer. Damn them.

Also, here is a link to an opinion piece about the trade paperback trend. They talk a lot about Vertigo, and I can't help but wonder if some of the reasons for our problems with DC and Hellblazer can't be found here.
