a) Venus is the patron goddess of the City of Rome the Romans invented water-resistant concrete the primary Roman condiment was a fermented fish sauce similar to some now used in South Asia the British city of Bath is named after its Roman ruins, which are public bathhouses
b) all gladiatorial games involved killing a lot of people
When I was in high school, my other buddy who went to another (shittier) school had to a report on Ancient Roman mosaics.
She came across a mosaic of one guy anal sexing another guy.
That's the awesomest thing I know about Rome, and I totally dig if you're not going to use that. I have one of those Latin for Every Day Occasions books, I could look some up if you needed them ... but I'm sure you'd know them all.
Some of the Latin graffiti in the sets of HBO's Rome is like that, too... it was really embarrassing watching the show with my mother, and she'd pause the TV and ask me to translate.
Reasons my life is strange, #4,985,032: I have had to translate Latin pornography tidbits for my mother.
