Here's the first "two truths and a lie" set that came to mind:

(1) All men are mortal.
(2) Socrates is a man.
(3) All men are Socrates.

In the a) column: Cicero was only 19 when he delivered his first speech
Maltese dogs existed in ancient Rome

In the b) column: All buildings were white (i.e. no colour was used on the outside)

Ummmm...I really should be able to think of more...I have no brain right now! If I think of more, I'll write you!

Ooh, I like these. I'd thought of b), but only as concerned statues and stuff. You're right that it's just as impressive about the buildings.

a) Venus is the patron goddess of the City of Rome
the Romans invented water-resistant concrete
the primary Roman condiment was a fermented fish sauce similar to some now used in South Asia
the British city of Bath is named after its Roman ruins, which are public bathhouses

b) all gladiatorial games involved killing a lot of people

Oh yay. I'm particularly happy with the concrete one, because I've been compiling a list of random Roman inventions, culminating with the doggy bag.

And so very yes on b). It's one of those things that people just assume, that wasn't always true.

When I was in high school, my other buddy who went to another (shittier) school had to a report on Ancient Roman mosaics.

She came across a mosaic of one guy anal sexing another guy.

That's the awesomest thing I know about Rome, and I totally dig if you're not going to use that. I have one of those Latin for Every Day Occasions books, I could look some up if you needed them ... but I'm sure you'd know them all.

Ha. Yeah, afraid I can't use that one, though.

Some of the Latin graffiti in the sets of HBO's Rome is like that, too... it was really embarrassing watching the show with my mother, and she'd pause the TV and ask me to translate.

Reasons my life is strange, #4,985,032: I have had to translate Latin pornography tidbits for my mother.
