Summary: ten people were gathered in a mansion on Midnight Island, an island faraway from the coast.  They were lured there by fake letters signed by Kim Jaejoong except for Kim Jaejoong himself, who came because a will came his way and said that he was to inherit the mansion, only to witness the murders committed in an attempt to create a perfect orchestra.

Disclaimer: I don’t own anything except the OCs

A/N: I planned the whole story out, so unless there’s a major writer’s block, I should have no difficulty in finishing this, hopefully.  There will be five OCs here since I don’t plan on writing people other than DBSK, but worry not, they’re here simply because… uh… for the plot’s sake.  There will be no romance between DBSK and the OCs.

This piece was deeply inspired after I played “Agatha Christie - And Then There Were None”.  Awesome piece, I must say.  There is a huge difference in characters and how the storyline progresses, though some main points are the same.  Anyway, onto the story.

Chapter One - The Ride to Midnight Island

Jaejoong sat in his desk as he quietly leafed through the various documents scattered on the glass surface.  He sighed tiredly as he read through the reports of his previous cases and nearly winced when he saw the name Lee Eun Hye, Si Changsun, and An Hojun.  He decided that being in a courtroom wasn’t such a happy experience.

“Hey, look at this, a letter for you,” a young man announced happily as he walked into Jaejoong’s office with a goofy grin spread across his face.  “It’s rare to see one, isn’t it?” he asked as he let the big brown envelope fall down on Jaejoong’s desk, nearly blowing the pieces of paper off.

“Are you mocking me?” Jaejoong growled slightly at the indication of his words.  It wasn’t like their office was out of business or something.  So what if Jung Yunho opened a private investigator office right next to theirs?  That jerk.

The man thought for a while and shook his head.  “I didn’t mean a letter for us.  I told you it’s for you,” he shrugged and pointed at the front of the envelope, where the name Jaejoong was written instead of their firm’s name.

“Who sent it?” Jaejoong asked, cutting the edge of the envelope slowly with a pair of scissors and taking out the piece of paper, along with a map of a place he hadn’t known yet.

“How should I know?  I’m not the postman!” the man protested as he raised his feet and rested them on the edge of Jaejoong’s desk.  “Hm, tell me what it says,” he demanded.

“And what if this is a personal letter, hm?” Jaejoong retorted as he unfolded the paper and frowned when he saw the name of the sender.  “That’s strange.”

“What’s strange, Jaejoong-ah?” the man tilted his head to look at him, careful so he didn’t accidentally turn the chair more than necessary and fell down onto the floor.

“Yuhan-ah, have you heard of Midnight Island?” Jaejoong asked as he skimmed the contents, and reread it again, thinking that he had read wrong.

“Oh, it’s the island off the coast.  Not very big, but not small either.  I heard there’s a residence there, but no one comes there anymore.  There’s a boat going there once a week, though, since an old man supposedly lives there.  Heard he died last week because of heart failure,” Yuhan answered idly as he crossed his arms behind his head.  “What about it?”

“This letter is from my uncle.  It said he wrote my name in his will and said that the mansion would be mine after he passed away.  Strange thing is, I didn’t know my uncle owned a mansion anywhere.  And I’m not even close to him,” Jaejoong mumbled slightly as he put away the letter and examined the map.  “It’s the map of the mansion and the island.”

“Mm… aren’t you going?” Yuhan asked, looking at Jaejoong with an amused smile on his lips.  “Just to check if it’s true or not.  Even if it isn’t, there might be something that needs to be solved there.”

Jaejoong pursed his lips and mulled over it for a while before he raised his hands in defeat.  “Fine, we’ll pack our things and go to the dock first thing in the morning tomorrow.  I’m making a few phone calls, so can you pack for me?”

“Right-o,” Yuhan agreed and exited the office room.  Jaejoong could see him enter their shared bedroom at the end of the hallway and stared at the phone beside him.

“Oh, what the hell,” he grunted and picked the phone, dialing a certain number.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Hello?” a familiar voice greeted from the other end of the line, and Junsu nearly squealed in delight.  “Hello?  Are you there?” the voice asked again.

“Yes, hyung, I’m here,” Junsu answered almost immediately as he caught himself from nearly falling off his bed.  “Are you calling to invite me to dinner again?” he asked excitedly.

“Um, no, but I can if you want,” the voice answered almost reluctantly and Junsu could feel his face drop before it brightened up again.

“Oh, then I’m going to come over later today,” Junsu announced.  “Anyway, why do you call then, Jaejoong-hyung?” he asked, wondering what caused his cousin to worry.

“There’s this-”

“Oh, hey, I’ve just remembered about the letter earlier,” Junsu cut off before Jaejoong had the time to explain.  “It’s about a trip to Midnight Island.  Why didn’t you just ask me over the phone?”

“I was going to ask you over the phone,” Jaejoong admitted confusedly.  “What about the letter?  I received one too.  It said that my uncle passed away last week and he gave his mansion on the island to me… strange thing is, I don’t remember him having a mansion at all.”

“Is this a hoax?” Junsu asked, now equally confused.

“I’m not sure, but Yuhan and I are going to investigate anyway.  One week should be enough to get the basic things wrapped up.  Are you coming?” Jaejoong asked.  “I didn’t want to get you into trouble, but I thought I’ll be very lonely if it’s only me and Yuhan there for a week.”

“Aish, aren’t you happy that you’re going to be alone with Yuhan-shii for a week?” Junsu joked as he chuckled a little, and he could picture Jaejoong scowling at him.

“I’m always alone with him in my office,” Jaejoong remarked unhappily.  “So are you coming or not?” he asked again.

Junsu fell over laughing.  He knew that the two had lived together in an apartment since four years ago, and they had become quite close over the years.  But as much as he liked the two, he valued his life and his food more.

“Yes, I’m coming.  I’ve done finished packing before you called, so I’m taking a bath here then I’m going to your place,” Junsu answered calmly though a happy smile was pasted on his face.

“Glad to hear that.  I’ll see you in a bit.  Meanwhile, I better start preparing dinner,” Jaejoong said, and the dial tone was heard.

Junsu smiled to himself and skipped towards the bathroom.  He had heard of the infamous Midnight Island, and he wanted to see it for his own even once.  He was thankful this opportunity came, although he knew it was a hoax, but he supposed he was fairly safe if he stayed with Jaejoong and Yuhan.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong and Yuhan picked Junsu up at his apartment in the morning before they headed towards the dock.  The taxi driver seemed rather impatient when they were waiting for Junsu, but he waited nonetheless.  They all were only bringing one bag so there were not much space needed.

They arrived at the dock half an hour later, and they saw eight other people standing on the pier, including the chief of the place.  They walked over and the chief greeted them.

“Kim Jaejoong, Kim Junsu, and Lee Yuhan, I believe?” the chief asked as he looked at the clipboard he was carrying.  “Right this way, please.  The other passengers to Midnight Island have all gathered here, and the boat will come in about ten minutes,” he announced as he turned to leave.

“Yoochun!” Junsu exclaimed when he saw the figure leaning against a wooden pole.  “What are you doing here?” he asked as he walked over to his teammate.

“Junsu?  What are you doing here?” he asked back as he leaned forward and steadied himself.

“I’m going to the island with Jaejoong.  Ah, come to think of it, I forgot to invite you over to dinner at Jaejoong’s.  Anyway, you’re going to the island too?” Junsu explained.

“Oh, I was asked to accompany Jaejoong on the investigation there, so I thought I’ll just wait him here,” Yoochun answered and Junsu threw him a strange look.  “What?”

“No, that’s not possible.  Jaejoong-hyung is going with Yuhan-shii.  He said that his uncle sent him a letter about his inheritance of the mansion and he’s investigating it with Yuhan-shii.  He said it’s a hoax,” Junsu shook his head and motioned for Jaejoong and Yuhan to come over.

“Oh, hey there Yoochun-ah,” Jaejoong greeted as he smiled slightly, moving to stand beside Yoochun.

“Jaejoong-hyung!” Changmin greeted as he bounded over to the four and beamed at them.  “It’s so thoughtful of you to ask all of us on this trip!  I don’t get it, however, why would you ask Yunho-hyung for help to investigate?  And what’s there to investigate?” he asked.

“Ask all of you?” Jaejoong asked, raising an eyebrow at him.  He knew Changmin from the time when he took Yuhan to the hospital to get him operated.  Changmin was the surgeon’s assistant and he was the one who accompanied Jaejoong as he waited for Yuhan to gain consciousness before he was allowed inside.

“Yes, we all received a letter from you asking us on a trip to Midnight Island,” Changmin answered, almost feeling hesitant upon seeing Jaejoong’s expression.

“I don’t remember sending anything.  I’ve only got the letter about the mansion yesterday, anyway.  And why would I ask Yunho for help?” Jaejoong defended himself.

“Hm… I don’t know, but it seems that everyone is here because of the letter.  I suppose you two are here because of the letter too?  I know Yuhan-shii is here because Jaejoong-hyung is here,” Changmin asked Junsu and Yoochun.

“I got the letter too,” Junsu acknowledged.  “It’s a forged signature, I’m sure.  The letter’s typed, so it can be anyone.  I’m not sure who, but we’re here to investigate.”

“And why would Jaejoong invite those four on a trip?” Yuhan asked as he looked over to Eun Hye, Hojun, Yongchui and Changsun who stood by the side.

“Hey,” Yunho said as he walked over and stopped before Jaejoong.  He opened his mouth to speak but Jaejoong shot him a killer glare, as if daring him to continue.

“Don’t say anything,” Jaejoong scowled.  “I’m not the one who sent the letter,” he added with a huff and crossed his hands in front of his chest.

Just as he said that, a loud noise could be heard and the boat approached the pier.  They all silently carried their bags there and sat down in pairs, thinking of what would be waiting for them there, and why they were gathered in the mansion.

End of Chapter One

This is the end of chapter one.  Hope you enjoy it, guys.  Please leave a comment if you do.  I have fun writing it, because it’s a mystery piece with a touch of romance… and I’m looking forward to the fluffy part, though it won’t happen until later chapters.
