Rating: PG
Genre: romance, fluff, AU
Pairing: Yunjae
Summary: Yunho forgets his own birthday
Disclaimer: I don’t own anything
A/N: a birthday fic for Yunho. This happens in the same universe as “Stranded”, in which Yunjae are engaged, but this happens way earlier than “Stranded”, I guess…
Note, this happens right after Jaejoong accepted Yunho as his fiancé (according to the bigger universe, which I haven’t started writing yet XDD).
Not much humor in this one. I’m focusing on the fluff and sap XDDD beware of my corny attempts at fluffy and sappy romance. This piece is dedicated to all my LJ friends and loyal commenters. I love you guys~
Also, I want to credit callie20 and himeno15 for the idea of making U-Know and Hero separate from Yunho and Jaejoong XD
Birthday Present
Yunho woke up that morning to an empty house, with his parents away to his grandparents’ house, and his little prankster-of-a-brother U-Know over at his boyfriend, Hero’s, house. He was a little miffed to know his brother was luckier than he was, even though he was engaged to Jaejoong.
He rolled over in his bed and groaned as he pulled his cover over his head, trying to keep the sunlight from attacking his eyes. It was still early and he didn’t have any morning class, so he didn’t have to wake up early.
Wait a minute… did he even have any classes today?
He blinked an eye open and looked at the calendar. Yep, no classes at all today. So that meant he was free to do anything he wanted to until Jaejoong’s classes were over and go pick him up then.
He was about to bury his face in his pillow and go back to sleep when his cell phone suddenly rang. He stared sleepily at the screen and raised a brow when he saw Jaejoong’s name on the screen.
“Mm, what does he want at this kind of time?” he mumbled to himself as he reached for his cell phone and pressed the green button before putting it to his ear. “Hello?”
“Where the heck are you!? It’s already seven! I need to get to school in, say, an hour and you’re not even here!”
The shout that greeted him wasn’t exactly what he expected from the usually shy and respectful boy. Ever since his mother broke the news that they were engaged to him, he had turned slightly violent and loud, but he couldn’t ask for more. He knew Jaejoong was the type of person who felt at ease doing those only to people he deemed very close to him.
Then something else hit his mind.
“Aw shit! I forgot about it! I’m sorry Jae!” Yunho panicked when he remembered that he had promised to give Jaejoong and Junsu a lift to school since the bus they usually took was out of service for three days. “I’ll get there in about twenty minutes, I promise! Wait for me!”
A sigh and a click of tongue answered him, before a soft “okay” was spoken. He shouted out a “thank you” as he threw his cell to his bed and rushed towards the bathroom, going through his morning routines in a frenzied manner.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Finally decided to show up, eh, Mr. Jung?” Jaejoong muttered sarcastically as he stood in front of Yunho, tapping his foot in impatience and crossing his arms in front of his chest. “I know there’s such a thing as fashionably late, but I don’t think I’m going to want a replay of this incident tomorrow.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” Yunho mumbled as he bowed down at Jaejoong. “I thought it was tomorrow!”
Jaejoong shook his head and sighed. “No use in scolding you now. I’ll talk to you after school,” he said simply before he turned to face the inside of his apartment. “Junsu! Yunho’s here! Get your ass down here at this instant!”
Sounds of scrambling were heard and Junsu soon emerged with a toast hanging from his mouth. He quickly put on his shoes and slung his book bag over his shoulder before standing beside Jaejoong.
“Hello hyung!” Junsu greeted as he grinned at the older boy who grinned back at him.
“Enough. We don’t want to be late,” Jaejoong said as he pulled Junsu’s hand and walked towards Yunho’s car. “And what did I tell you about eating and talking?”
Junsu mumbled an apology and continued eating his toast after getting into the backseat. Jaejoong got into the passenger seat and Yunho blinked his eyes.
Was he dreaming? If he was, he’d never want this to stop.
Jaejoong had never got into the passenger seat of his car. He didn’t even want to get into his car, except if it was a very pressing matter that required him to do so, so seeing him in the passenger seat without being asked to was somewhat a miracle.
“Hey! Are you going to drive us there, or should I get ourselves into a hospital by driving myself?” Jaejoong shouted at Yunho who was still standing in front of their apartment building while Junsu laughed out loud behind him, before stifling it after Jaejoong shot him a death glare.
“Yes! I’m coming!” Yunho grinned and quickly got into the driver side, not wanting to pass up on such a wonderful opportunity granted to him.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Yunho?” Jaejoong asked uncertainly as he looked at his watch. Thanks to Yunho’s speeding, they managed to arrive at Jaejoong’s school ten minutes before the bell rang.
“Yes?” Yunho asked, looking up at him. He was about to leave since Junsu had entered the school building and Jaejoong looked ready to leave as well, but decided not to yet.
“Erm, are you free tonight?” Jaejoong asked, his face flushing a little. “I mean, Junsu’s out for tonight because he’s staying in Hyukjae’s apartment near school.”
Yunho looked at Jaejoong questioningly, and Jaejoong swore that if they had been characters from a comic book, question marks would start flying around Yunho’s head.
“I’m inviting you over, idiot,” Jaejoong snapped, pouting at Yunho’s slowness. Here he was throwing away his pride and inviting him over, and he didn’t get it.
“Oh!” Yunho exclaimed once what Jaejoong meant sank in. “Of course. I don’t have any classes today, and no morning classes tomorrow,” he agreed almost too enthusiastically.
“Good. I’ll be waiting for you here right after school’s ended,” Jaejoong nodded approvingly as he sighed and stood up beside the door to the driver seat.
“See you,” Jaejoong mumbled as he bent down and kissed Yunho’s cheek softly before he quickly turned and ran away from there, blushing like mad.
It took Yunho approximately two minutes to process what had just happened, and another two minutes before he finished squealing and grinning like an idiot. He then quickly took out his cell phone and dialed a number he knew so well.
“Hello?” the voice from the other side asked. “What happened? You missed me already?”
“No, you dork. I’m calling you to tell you that you have to stay at home tonight since no one would be there. Bring Hero over for all I care, just don’t mess around in my room.”
“Aw~ hyung’s finally getting some action!”
“Shut up!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yunho stood nervously beside his car, fiddling with the key as he looked at the side window once again to check if he was presentable enough for Jaejoong.
“Stop fidgeting. You look presentable.”
Yunho turned around at breakneck speed and grinned sheepishly while scratching the back of his head. “Sorry. Can’t help myself,” he added.
Jaejoong snorted and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Well, do you need more time?”
“No!” Yunho replied almost too quickly that he nearly choked on his own saliva. “Uh, I mean, no, I’m okay.”
Jaejoong shrugged and got into the passenger seat again before Yunho got inside as well, and they took off to Jaejoong’s apartment.
“Make yourself at home,” Jaejoong stated as he took off his shoes and walked inside, leaving Yunho to lock the door and hang the keys near it.
“Thank you,” Yunho accepted the offer quickly as he sat down on the couch and turned the television on, trying to find some good programs he could watch while Jaejoong was in the kitchen preparing dinner.
The wait wasn’t unpleasant at all as Yunho found a rather interesting live report on a recent basketball and soccer match. Plus, the smell of food coming from the kitchen close by helped lift the mood.
“Is it ready yet?” Yunho asked when Jaejoong walked out of the kitchen. He followed Jaejoong to the kitchen after he nodded slightly, and was welcomed with the sight of a feast.
“Ah, wow. They look delicious,” Yunho commented randomly as he stared at the mouth-watering food laid in front of his eyes. “Are you sure I can eat them?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” Jaejoong chuckled and slapped Yunho’s arm lightly. “Now go eat them before they go cold while I prepare the dessert,” he said and walked over to the fridge, taking out a tray of chocolate cake.
He enjoyed the feast and cake tremendously, and was now lying on the couch again with a contented smile on his face. “Thanks for the meal.”
“Did you like it?” Jaejoong asked, sitting beside Yunho.
“Yes,” Yunho grinned widely. “Hm, but what occasion is it? I thought your birthday has passed already.”
Jaejoong paused visibly, and the soft smile that had been tugging on his lips disappeared as his expression became cold and dead serious, a frown marring his perfect features.
“Jae?” Yunho asked uncertainly. He didn’t know what he did wrong, but he was desperate to make amends.
“My birthday has passed already…” Jaejoong muttered under his breath as he got up from his seat. “Think of the answer yourself while you meditate here, you jerk!”
And Yunho could only watch as Jaejoong stormed to his room, banging his door and locking it in the process. He was still wondering what he did wrong when he saw a small blue box lying on the floor.
“Looks like it fell down when he was stomping,” Yunho commented randomly as he examined the box. It had a piece of paper glued to the top of the lid.
Happy birthday Yunho. I’m sorry I’ve been a brat to you for nearly a whole year, but I’m willing to start anew if you are. Here is your birthday present. You told me you like classic music, so here’s a ticket to an upcoming concert. Enjoy yourself.
Love, your fiancé
Kim Jaejoong
At that moment, he felt like he was the biggest idiot ever. Jaejoong had planned a huge dinner for him, and even went all out for his present-he knew the ticket didn’t come cheap-yet he forgot all about it. Even if it was his own birthday, he felt like he had just forgotten Jaejoong’s birthday.
“Now… how am I supposed to go talk to him?”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Aish, that stupid idiot. I can’t believe he forgets his own birthday,” Jaejoong mumbled as he buried his face in his pillow. “Why can’t he take care of himself like he does others?”
He sighed softly and looked at the small stuffed bunny Yunho had given him as a birthday present nearly two weeks ago because he said he liked rabbits.
“Why can’t he be a little more selfish?” he questioned himself, hugging his pillow to his chest as he continued to stare at the stuffed bunny.
“Do you really want me to?”
“Gyah!” Jaejoong jumped up in surprise and nearly fell down onto the floor. “What are you doing here!?” he demanded, pointing an accusing finger at Yunho who was standing behind him, blinking innocently.
“I’m here to talk to you,” Yunho shrugged. “The window, since there’s no way you’d open the door for me at this kind of time. But you really need to be more careful, or robbers will have their way easily,” he explained when Jaejoong shot him a how-do-you-get-in look.
Jaejoong pouted as he threw his pillow at Yunho. “Just because I forgot to lock it today doesn’t I mean I always do.”
Yunho grinned at that. “Really? Or were you really hoping I’d come in through the window?”
“No!” Jaejoong quickly defended himself and glared at Yunho again. “What do you want to talk about?”
“I’m sorry,” Yunho said softly as he moved towards Jaejoong and sat before him, bowing slightly before he cupped Jaejoong’s face in his hand.
“Argh!” Jaejoong screamed in frustration. “There! You did it again!” he pointed at Yunho again and glared heatedly. “That wasn’t your fault! Why do you always have to apologize to others!?”
“I don’t always apologize to others,” Yunho defended himself, frowning slightly. “I only apologize to you. And it’s somewhat my fault for forgetting it although you’ve prepared everything for me. It makes me ungrateful, right?”
“But still… it was my fault for shouting at you…” Jaejoong mumbled.
“I know how it feels, Jae,” Yunho cut him while he was trailing off. “U-Know was always apologizing too,” he added when Jaejoong looked at him questioningly.
“You brothers are the same,” Jaejoong commented as he shook his head.
“Oh, and if I heard it right, you said you wanted me to be more selfish,” Yunho added with a grin. Jaejoong nodded while looking at him suspiciously and he continued, “Then I want you to accept me. Announce that you are mine, and mine only.”
Jaejoong laughed at the request. “You call that selfish?” he asked with a grin. “Didn’t I accept you already? Didn’t I announce it already? I thought the letter said all.”
“How do you know I got the letter?” Yunho asked, his brows creasing together in a frown.
“I figured you would never remember today is your birthday otherwise,” Jaejoong simply shrugged. “But if that’s what you want, then who am I to deny you?” he grinned then.
“I accept you, Jung Yunho, as my fiancé. And starting today, I am your official fiancé.”
“That’s better.”
End of Birthday Present
This is… so very CORNY. Argh~!
I’m trying my best not to let any main events in the supposedly bigger universe be written in one-shot fics of the same universe, since it would be rather… anti-climatic? when the actual story came up.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this, because I had a hard time writing and finishing this.
Oh, and early Happy Chinese New Year to you all ^________________^
