Chapter Eight - Hanging Out

“Hey Jae,” Seven greeted as he walked into the club room.  “It’s a little lonely without Yunho here, no?” he commented, sighing as he looked around the room.

“Yeah,” Jaejoong mumbled as he looked up from his bow.  “I miss my partner,” he mumbled as his hand still worked to fix his string, and Seven smiled a little.

“It’s only a week away now,” Seven mumbled as he took his own bow and arrows.  “Did you manage to find a way?” he asked, looking over at Jaejoong who was sitting on a bench.

“More or less,” Jaejoong shrugged a little.  “I found out his and my families are friends ever since our grandparents’ days, and that his house is near mine.”

“Oh, that’s good then,” Seven nodded.  “Well, I’ll be at the outside court, if you feel like sparring with me,” he offered, and walked out of the room.

Jaejoong paused, and sighed, leaning back slightly.  “Stupid Yunho.  He said he’d still be here until the exam day,” he pouted, fingering his arrows.

“Excuse me, but I don’t think calling people stupid is a nice thing to do.”

Jaejoong quickly looked up in surprise, but couldn’t help but let a grin grace his features.  “Yunho!” he exclaimed as he jumped up.  “Where were you!?”

“Got caught in the traffic,” Yunho sighed tiredly as he placed his bag on the bench, and walked over to his locker.  “I always keep my promises.”

“Is that so?” Jaejoong grinned almost challengingly, and Yunho punched him playfully.  “Okay, okay, get changed already.  We don’t have much time.”

“Bossy jerk.”

“Shut up, old man.”

“Whatever, kid.”

They looked at each other intently, as if engaging themselves in a staring contest, and then burst out laughing.

“Go get ready!”

”Okay, okay.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Hey Yunho,” Jaejoong called as he finished putting his things in the locker, and took his bag.  “How is the preparation for the exam coming along?”

They had just finished their afternoon practice sessions, and Seven had gone off earlier to talk about their decisions regarding the instructor with the teachers and principal, asking them to lock up.

“It’s going smoothly,” Yunho shrugged as he picked his own bag, and ushered Jaejoong out of the room before he himself exited and locked the door behind him.

“Oh,” Jaejoong mumbled.  “Where are you going?”

“Somewhere out there,” Yunho chuckled.

“I know that!” Jaejoong protested, huffing lightly.

“Somewhere around here.  Not too far, but not near as well,” Yunho shrugged.  “Why do you ask?”

“I just want to know,” Jaejoong replied.  “You know my apartment.  Drop by sometimes.”

“Of course,” Yunho nodded.  “Oh… are you free tomorrow?” he asked, looking back at Jaejoong.

Jaejoong blinked and stared at him.  “Are you asking me out?”

“What do you think?” Yunho rolled his eyes.  “U-Know and Hero want to go to a game center tomorrow, and my mother told me to watch over them.  I thought it’d be boring if I didn’t do anything.”

“Oh,” Jaejoong mumbled, then thought it over.  “I guess I don’t have anything to do.”

“Great.  You can ask your kids if they want to come as well,” Yunho nodded, grinning a little.  “Do you want me to pick you guys up?” he asked.

“Eh?  No, I’ll just ask you where it is later tonight,” Jaejoong shrugged.  “Your car is not big anyway.  We won’t fit,” he laughed, his eyes sparkling mirthfully.

“If you say so,” Yunho said.

“I’ll tell you what they say later.”

“Okay.  See you.”

“See you!” Jaejoong waved as Yunho walked off to the parking lot.

As soon as Yunho was out of sight, he fell silent and wondered why he felt disappointed, even if only for a split second.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong walked out of the bathroom, drying his hair, and idly wondered again why the hell their apartment was so cramped up.  He walked to the living room, and saw the boys playing a video game.

Although their apartment was small, it turned out to be their favorite hanging out spot-for a reason that remained unknown to him-and today was like those lazy days where they had nothing better to do.

“What are you playing?” Jaejoong asked as he sat on the couch, and continued drying his hair, looking at the screen and watching small army men carrying guns walking.

“Metal Slug,” Junsu answered since he was the one not playing at the moment.

“Slug?” Jaejoong blinked.

“Yes, slug,” Junsu nodded, pursing his lips.

“Isn’t that, like, a snail?” Jaejoong asked again.

“Don’t ask me, ask the developer of the game,” Junsu shrugged.

Jaejoong looked at the screen again, and decided to not continue watching it since it was getting a little violent, what with the tanks and armies.

“Are you guys hungry yet?” Jaejoong asked, looking at Junsu.

“Yes!” Yoochun and Changmin shouted out at the same time and Jaejoong looked at them with deadpanned expression.

“Why the heck you guys only answer when it has to do with food?” Jaejoong rolled his eyes, but quickly got up from the couch.  “I’ll make dinner now, and call you guys later when it’s ready.”

“Okay!” Yoochun and Changmin shouted back as they kept playing, trying to get the higher score than the other by defeating more enemies.

“Those kids never learn…”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“These hours of endless playing will take their toll one day,” Jaejoong commented as he watched Junsu and Yoochun compete with each other in a racing game.

“Aw umma, don’t stress yourself out over it,” Changmin patted his back.

“No, seriously, I’m amazed you guys haven’t had eyesight problems yet,” Jaejoong shook his head.

“We’re fine,” Changmin shrugged.  “And it’s not like our grades are affected by this anyway, so you don’t have to worry about anything,” he said, trying to be as reassuring as he could.

“If you say so,” Jaejoong mumbled, although he didn’t look entirely convinced.

“Of course,” Changmin nodded, grinning a little.

“Oh, by the way, Yunho asked us to go to a game center tomorrow.  He said he’s told to look after U-Know and Hero, and he asked us to come,” Jaejoong said, and Yoochun and Junsu paused their game to listen the instant they heard he mention the name Yunho.  “Do you want to come?”

“Won’t we come in the way of things?” Changmin teased, but moved back quickly enough to avoid Jaejoong’s flying punch that was directed at him.

“Yah, if you can guarantee that we won’t die kicked by a horse, I’ll come!” Junsu said cheerfully.  “It’s been so long since I last went to one!”

“Me too,” Yoochun commented.

“Well, me too,” Changmin shrugged.

“Okay, it’s settled then,” Jaejoong nodded.  “I’ll ask where they’re going tonight.  We’re going there by ourselves tomorrow, okay?” he asked.

“Okay!”

And in the speed of light, Yoochun and Junsu were back competing with each other, occasionally shouting at each other and accusing the other of cheating.

“I swear this is becoming unhealthy,” Jaejoong mumbled as he pursed his lips unhappily.  “And it’s either I am becoming slow in processing things that happened around me, or you guys somehow have transformed to Flashes.”

“Maybe you’re getting too old, umma.  Don’t strain yourself trying,” Changmin offered and advised, and then ducked in time to avoid the flying cushion.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Yeoboseyo?”

“Hey Yunho,” Jaejoong greeted as he lied on his bed, playing with his pillow.  “Am I disturbing you?”

“No, not at all.  I’ve just finished sending U-Know to bed.  That kid is way too hyperactive.”

Jaejoong laughed.  “Same here,” he admitted.  “I’ve just made sure they’re really asleep and not pretending to so they could play games again once I’m asleep.”

“So?”

“Oh… mm… the kids said they want to come along,” Jaejoong said.  “Where is it?”

Yunho told him where they would be going tomorrow, and Jaejoong nodded absently, although he knew full well Yunho wouldn’t be able to see him.

“Okay.  The time?”

“Eleven in the morning.  Eat breakfast first.”

“Of course.  I’ll see you there then?”

“Jae.”

”Yes?”

“What did you do now?”

“What did I do?” Jaejoong asked back, confused.

“Seven asked me whether we’re dating.  What did you do to him?”

“I didn’t do anything!” Jaejoong defended himself.  “I told you he thought I like you!”

Silence.

“Yunho?  You still there?”

“Oh, yes, I am.”

“Why did you keep quiet?”

“Nothing… just thinking.”

“About?” Jaejoong inquired.  He couldn’t help being curious since Yunho rarely space out or think while he was talking or being with others.  He found it rather unsettling.

“Hm… did you two progress in any way?”

“I don’t know,” Jaejoong sighed.  “I don’t think so, though.”

“Oh…”

“Why?  You sound-“

“Don’t.”

“Okay…”

“Sorry.  Anyway, good luck.  I’m sorry.”

“Huh?  What are you sorry- Yunho?  Yunho?”

Jaejoong stared at his cell phone.  Yunho had hung up on him.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Hyung?  You okay?  You look restless,” Junsu commented as he watched Jaejoong work in the kitchen, stifling a yawn.  “Did you have enough sleep?”

Jaejoong looked up at him.  “Oh, don’t worry about me.  I was only thinking about something,” he smiled, and patted the chair behind him. “Sit down Su.  Breakfast will be ready soon.”

Junsu nodded and walked over to the chair, sitting down while still rubbing his eyes to get rid of the sleep.

“Morning,” Yoochun greeted as he walked into the kitchen, hair tousled and pajamas unkempt.  He sat down beside Junsu, and let his head rest on the table.

“Tsk, tsk,” Changmin shook his head as he walked into the kitchen and saw the two lazing around.  He walked over, and made a cup of coffee for himself.  “To think I’m not too much of a morning person.”

Jaejoong laughed, and gave a plate of food to Changmin.  “You’re early today.”

“I can’t sleep after getting kicked by Junsu for the tenth tme,” Changmin pursed his lips, showing his bruised leg.  “Next time I won’t agree to sleep in his room.”

Jaejoong patted his back sympathetically.  “Well, have some,” he said, and gave another plate to him.

Changmin brought the plates to the table, and sat down, eating his breakfast.

“Hyung~ where’s my breakfast?” Junsu whined.

“Here you go,” Jaejoong said as he brought two plates to the table, and placed them in front of Junsu and Yoochun.  “Come on, start eating.”

Jaejoong blinked, and when he opened his eyes, Yoochun and Junsu were already sitting up straight in their seats, shoveling their food into their mouths.

“Maybe I am getting old…”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Hyung!  Come on!  I want to try that one too!” U-Know said excitedly as he pointed at a new game machine in the arcade, and tugged at Junsu’s sleeve.

Yes, the instant they arrived there, Yoochun and Junsu had somehow turned to little kids who went everywhere with U-Know and Hero, trying out every game they could get their hands on while Changmin followed them around, making sure they didn’t get into trouble, or get lost.

Jaejoong laughed as he watched them.  He had apologized to U-Know for being impolite that time, and they’ve quickly become friends.  He had become friends with Hero as well, and he found himself liking the two of them.

Yunho shook his head while smiling beside him, watching the five go around the arcade like hurricanes.  Once in every two minutes or so, they’d pass in front of them while circling the game center.

“Yunho,” Jaejoong called as he turned to look at him.  “Why did you hang up yesterday?”

“I got to go,” Yunho shrugged.

“Couldn’t you have said so first!?” Jaejoong glared at him.  “I know you’re lying.  You never hang up on anyone.  Anyone at all,” he pointed out.

“Look, I’m sorry, okay?” Yunho sighed tiredly.  “It’s not like I want to hang up on you!”

“Then why did you!?” Jaejoong demanded.  “And what did you mean by what you said last night!?”

“It means just that!  Can’t you understand simple Korean!?  Or should I speak Japanese with you!?” Yunho retorted, glaring back at Jaejoong.

“Don’t test my patience-“

“Nuna, why are they fighting like Appa and Umma?” a little boy asked his older sister curiously as he pointed at them with his chubby little finger.

“Hush, don’t point at people, it’s rude,” his sister reprimanded as she pulled his hand down, and hoisted him up.  “And don’t think of Appa and Umma for a while, okay?  They will reconcile soon.  I promise.”

The little boy looked at them again, and then back at his sister.  “Then will they reconcile soon too?” he asked, sucking on his thumb a little.

“Let’s hope they do,” she kissed his forehead, and bowed apologetically at them before she walked off with his brother who turned around and waved at them.

Jaejoong and Yunho blinked dumbly as they watched the siblings walk off, before they slowly looked at each other, and burst out laughing.

“I’m sorry for getting mad,” Jaejoong said, smiling a little at Yunho.  “I should’ve thought things first.”

“No, it was my fault for hanging up on you,” Yunho shrugged.

Jaejoong opened his mouth but Yunho quickly silenced him by placing a finger on his lips.

“Don’t,” Yunho shook his head.  “Let’s not start apologizing to each other and blaming ourselves now.  We’re not here for that,” he suggested.

“Okay,” Jaejoong agreed.

“Hyung!  Come over here!” U-Know said as he waved frantically at the two from beside the Dance Dance Revolution machine.  “Try this out!”

Yunho laughed as he took Jaejoong’s hand and walked over to them, watching as Yoochun and Junsu step down from the machine, Junsu sulking because he lost to Yoochun only by a little.

“Hyung, try it out,” Junsu urged as he pushed Jaejoong towards the machine.

“Ah, but I don’t want to,” Jaejoong sulked, crossing his arms in front of his chest.

Yunho extended his hand towards him.  “I’ll dance with you,” he offered.  “We’ll do a double dance.”

Jaejoong looked at him, and at their dongsaengs who were all grinning stupidly at him.  “Aish fine,” he said as he took Yunho’s hand, and stepped up onto the dance machine.

“Yay!” the boys cheered as he stood on the platform.

Jaejoong sighed, and watched as Yunho select a song.  “Don’t worry.  I’m not that bad, really,” he grinned a little.

Yunho nodded and picked a song.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Not that bad my ass,” Junsu sulked as they stopped by a fast food restaurant to rest after hours of wasting money in the game center.  “He got A for Afronova!”

Jaejoong laughed as he took a piece of chicken strip from his tray.

“You never told me you’re good at this,” Junsu added.

“Why should I?” Jaejoong lifted an eyebrow.  “It’s not like we’re going there often.”

“Still,” Junsu pouted, and drank his cola.

“Oh come on, I’ll teach you how to if that makes you happy,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes.  “Maybe then you can defeat Yoochun?” he asked, looking at Yoochun who then choked on his drink.

“Promise?” Junsu looked at him hopefully.

“Yes,” Jaejoong confirmed.

Junsu shouted in joy and stuck his tongue at Yoochun while Yoochun tried his best pitiful look at Jaejoong.

“Come on, finish up and I’ll drive you guys back,” Yunho offered as he walked over to them.  He had excused himself to drive U-Know and Hero home before coming back here.

“Okay!”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Yunho?” Jaejoong asked as he stopped in front of his apartment door and turned to look at him.  “Thank you for today.”

“You’re welcome,” Yunho nodded in acknowledgement.  “At least I’m not bored out of my mind.”

Jaejoong laughed.  “Um… I-I still want to know why you said what you said last night…”

“Oh that…” Yunho mumbled.  He sighed.  “You’re not going to let it drop, are you?”

Jaejoong laughed a little, and closed the door behind him.  “No, so tell me.”

“I promised to myself once that I’ll help you get Seven to like you before I graduate,” Yunho shrugged.  “Turned out that I failed.  That’s why I’m sorry.”

“Oh,” Jaejoong’s mouth formed an ‘o’.  “You shouldn’t though.  It’s not your fault.”

“I know,” Yunho nodded grimly.  “If that’s all, I’ll be going back now.”

“Wait,” Jaejoong said quickly as he held onto Yunho’s sleeve.  “You never got to tell me who you like.”

“Why do you want to know?” Yunho frowned a little.

“We’ve been friends for a long time now.  Don’t you think I deserve to know?” Jaejoong pouted.

“There is a reason why I don’t tell you,” Yunho shook his head.

“Tell me~” Jaejoong whined.  “Maybe then I can help you!”

“You won’t be able to,” Yunho shook his head, and smiled weakly at him.  “Don’t think about it Jae.”

“But I want to!” Jaejoong insisted.

Yunho pushed him against the door behind him, and leaned in.  “Do you really want to know?”

When Jaejoong nodded in determination, Yunho leaned in and kissed him.
