Chapter Sixteen - Practice
Changmin walked briskly through the long corridor, his head whipping to the left and right occasionally as his eyes processed the words on each panel by the doors before he continued on.
“Cooking, sewing, literature, debate… ah, here it is.”
“Hello Min!” Jaejoong greeted as he looked up from the music book on his lap when he heard the door sliding open and close. “What are you doing here?”
“Visiting my beloved nuna,” Changmin grinned as he walked over, and nodded at Heechul, Shiwon and Yoochun who were adjusting the pitch of their instruments.
“No, really, what are you doing here?” Jaejoong asked again as he scooted over to let Changmin sit on the steps to the stage as well. “I thought you have club activities today?”
“The telescope is broken,” Keita said as he walked over, having just entered the room, and greeted the trio as he did so. “Well, we’re just hoping that the telescope is fixed before the Summer Triangle becomes visible.”
“Yeah, I agree. It won’t do if we miss it,” Jaejoong sighed, and placed a hand on his book. “So what are you two going to do now?”
“We’re here to keep you company,” Changmin shrugged, and scooted back over to let Keita squeeze in on the same step. “And don’t underestimate us. We’re quite good with musical instruments.”
“Yeah, I used to play the cello,” Keita added almost defensively, and Jaejoong chuckled, looking at him apologetically. “So when is it going to start?”
“As soon as my victim-uh, I mean partner comes,” Jaejoong laughed uneasily.
“Your victim?” Keita deadpanned.
“Well, he kind of tricked Yunho into singing a duet with him,” Yoochun added from the side.
“I did not!” Jaejoong protested, his face flushing slightly, and Keita and Changmin looked at him dubiously. “Really!”
“Really…” the two nodded, still expressionless. “Of course we believe in you.”
“Liar,” Jaejoong pouted, and crossed his arms in front of his chest, using his elbows to nudge both Keita and Changmin since he was sitting in the middle.
“Aish, stop pouting, you’re older than me,” Keita said as he pinched Jaejoong’s cheek.
“Uu~ dhen hu shud peut thu (then you should pout too)!” Jaejoong struggled to free himself from Keita.
“Nah, I’ll skip on that. It’s more amusing to watch you do it,” Keita remarked, and the others looked at him with a look that said ‘You actually understand what he said?’, and then they came to the conclusion that he had done that to Jaejoong one too many times, and had learned to understand what he said even in that condition.
“You’re mean,” Jaejoong rubbed his reddened cheek with his hand.
“Alright, let’s practice for a while first,” Heechul said as he got up, holding his cello in his left hand, and sat on a stool.
“Eh? What about Yunho then?” Jaejoong asked, furrowing his brows.
“He will catch up when he comes,” Shiwon said, shrugging as he sat on the stool beside Heechul. “Let’s start now, Jae.”
“Okay,” Jaejoong nodded, and started to sing the verses of Beauty and the Beast alone, but he purposefully skipped the male part-Yunho’s part. Just as he was reaching the ending, a male voice suddenly joined in, and finished the song together with him.
“Seven-hyung!” Jaejoong called as he looked over at the door, where Seven was standing.
“Hello Jae,” he greeted as he walked over, and sat on the step a few steps below theirs. “How have you been doing? I haven’t seen you in a while.”
“Oh~ I’m sorry. I was practicing with these guys,” Jaejoong said as he motioned at Heechul, Shiwon and Yoochun. “Were you looking for me?”
“Not really. I just wanted to see you,” Seven smiled at him, and Changmin looked away before rolling his eyes at the mushiness. Wasn’t it enough for Yunho only to be mushy? Why must Seven be mushy too?
“Ah, I see,” Jaejoong nodded. “Well, you’re looking at me now!” he added cheerfully.
“Yeah, you’re right,” Seven nodded, and held Jaejoong’s hand in his. “Let me stay here for a while, yes?”
“Of course,” Jaejoong agreed. “The music room is open for all, right?” he asked, looking at the trio who sweat-dropped, and merely nodded.
“Okay, we’ll begin practice again,” Heechul said, and Keita and Changmin went to the back to retrieve some musical instruments too-cello for Keita, and viola for Changmin.
The music began, and soon Jaejoong’s part started. He sang the first verse, and paused. The second verse was about to start, and Seven was about to fill in, when suddenly another male voice joined in, filling the void.
“Yunho!” Jaejoong’s face lit up when he saw him walking towards him. He stood up, and walked towards Yunho, singing his next part.
The song finished again, and the five put down their instruments to clap their hands at the two. Jaejoong bowed at them, and pulled Yunho down to bow at them when he noticed he didn’t.
Yoochun snickered at that, and Yunho threw him a glare.
They were about to start practicing again when Seven walked up to them clapping his hands. “You two sound surprisingly nice doing a duet together,” he commented.
“Why, thank you,” Yunho said as he pulled Jaejoong closer to himself and hugged him from behind. “It’s really something when it comes from the mouth of a rival.”
“A-“
“Shush Jae, you don’t have to know,” Yunho patted his head like one would do to a little kid.
“I’m not a sore loser,” Seven stated simply. “I admit my defeat this time. But it doesn’t mean I’m giving up.”
“Sure,” Yunho sighed. “I know you’re not going to so soon, anyway. Maybe we have to do something to mark you, Jae.”
“Eh!? I don’t want to get a tattoo!” Jaejoong protested in surprise as he looked disbelievingly at Yunho.
“I swear he was thinking about something more perverse,” Yoochun commented from the side, and the other four nodded in agreement.
“Uh… okay, we’re not going to get you a tattoo,” Yunho blinked at him.
Seven laughed, and bid goodbye to Jaejoong before he walked out of the music room. As he was passing Yunho, he said, “I’m not going to stop.”
The door slide open and close, and Yunho let out a long sigh. “Aish, Boo, why do you have to be so lovable?”
“Yah, if I’m not, will you love me?” Jaejoong pouted. “And you act like an old man, what with the sighing.”
“Of course I will,” Yunho frowned. “And you act like a little child, what with the pouting.”
“That’s my line!” Jaejoong accused.
“Well, what is yours is mine anyway. And what is mine is yours, so what’s the matter?” Yunho shrugged nonchalantly. “Oh, and what makes you think I love you because you’re lovable?”
“Huh?” Jaejoong looked at him in confusion. “Why else?”
“Because you are you,” Yunho smiled down at him. “And because I love Kim Jaejoong.”
Jaejoong was about to reply when Yoochun cut in, saying “Here we go with the Mush Attack again”, and Yunho threw him a dirty glare for interrupting his “special Yunjae moment”.
