Happy New Year

“Su-ie, don’t put too much charcoal inside,” Jaejoong reminded as he walked slowly-he refused to be called waddling-towards the backyard where the barbeque was held.  “And Ji Yul, stay away from it.  It’s hot.”

The two who were referred to immediately pouted.

“Minnie, the meat is still raw, don’t eat it yet,” Jaejoong added when he looked at the table.  “And Chun, those shrimps won’t peel their skins off themselves even if you glare at them without blinking.”

“Hero, U-Know, why don’t you guys be a dear and help out your hyungs?  They need your help,” Jaejoong pointed at Junsu who was squeaking when the bag of coal ripped and they fell onto his feet.  “And Yunho, for the love of everything holy, when will you stop buying strange foods?  I wonder if you’re the one with cravings instead.”

“Hm?” Yunho looked at him innocently while trying to store the bags of chips, cups of sour cream, cups of melted chocolate, and bags of cheese in the cupboard.  “They’re not strange at all.  I like to believe the grilled chocolate and beet omelet you made last week is stranger.”

“Since when do you talk back to me?” Jaejoong glared at him and he jumped up with a small ‘eep’, before promptly bowing at his almighty wife and worshipping the ground he walked on.

“Umma!” Ji Yul, clad in a fluffy jacket, rushed at him, and climbed onto his lap while he sat on the terrace, and hugged his stomach.  “I thought I told you to stay inside where it’s warm.”

“Jung Yunho what did you teach your daughter!?” Jaejoong almost shrieked.  Ji Yul was only three and a half years old, and she was already a mother hen like her father?  The world was slowly coming to an end for him.

“I didn’t teach her anything!” came Yunho’s reply from the bedroom.  “She just watched me, and wanted to take care of you too!” and he came out, with a blanket and a jacket.

“Aw hyung, you have such a loving family,” Hero teased as he passed, carrying the plate of raw meat that was to be grilled.  “Aren’t you lucky?”

“Shut up, you’re bound to experience what I’m going through,” Jaejoong pouted and hugged Ji Yul close to him.  “It’s in the gene.”

Hero quickly walked away, followed by U-Know who tried to convince him that he wouldn’t be as bad as Yunho.

“If you can cook and you know it raise your hand~” Junsu started singing to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it” while going around the yard, waiting for the charcoal to get hot.

“Is there anyone who wants to get rid of the shrimps’ skin?” Yoochun asked in defeat as he raised his hand up, and Junsu immediately squealed, and dragged him off to the grill.

“I can remove them with my teeth, but the shrimp will suddenly disappear into my stomach,” Changmin offered, and the others all threw him a glare.

“I’ll remove the skin,” Hero offered, and walked towards the table.

“I’ll help,” U-Know added, and quickly followed his boyfriend to the table.

“Don’t flirt, kiss, or feed each other there!” Changmin reminded as he went back inside the house to fetch the snacks Yunho bought Jaejoong, and try them.

“Shut up!” the two replied.

“I’ll help with the grill,” Jaejoong announced as he slowly stood up, and placed Ji Yul back on the ground.

“No, no!  The baby could get a tan, or even worse, a burn!” Ji Yul shook her head frantically, and pulled Jaejoong’s hand, urging him to sit back down.  “Umma just stay here, and we’ll do everything, okay?  I’ll set the fireworks up with Appa!”

“Yes, listen to your beloved daughter,” Yunho chuckled, and wrapped the jacket around Jaejoong, followed by the blanket.  “Cover your feet or they’ll get cold.  Stay here and stay warm if you want to be outside.  Otherwise, you’ll have to stay inside.”

“Come on, Appa, let’s set up the fireworks!” Ji Yul exclaimed excitedly as she rushed towards the outer edge of the little garden they had, and waved at Yunho.

“I’ll go now, don’t go anywhere,” Yunho kissed Jaejoong chastely, and went to approach Ji Yul, carrying a few tubes of fireworks with him.

“Wow, you are so loved, hyung,” Changmin commented as he sat down beside Jaejoong, snacking on a bag of Doritos-which made him wonder where Yunho got it-and watched Yunho and Ji Yul together, setting the fireworks.

Jaejoong looked at the two, at Junsu and Yoochun who were trying their best to grill the meat, at U-Know and Hero who were peeling the skins intently, and a small smile began to form on his face.

“Yeah,” he agreed, and smiled blissfully.

However, it didn’t last long.

“Yah, U-Know, the shrimps are not clean!”

“What!?  Your shrimps are the one too clean!  I swear some of the meat got ripped off!”

“Yah Chunnie, that was the tenth piece of meat that fell down!”

“Aish, you’ve dropped twelve pieces yourself!”

“Wah, Appa, why is the fuse sticking up!?  Shouldn’t it be down!?”

“I’m going to get some aspirin,” Jaejoong said as he rubbed his temple, and was about to stand up when Ji Yul suddenly came rushing to him, and sat on his lap again.

“Umma, Umma, the fireworks are going to start!  It’s ten seconds to new year!” she announced as she giggled loudly.  “I’m going to kiss baby-ah when new year comes!” she added, and hugged Jaejoong’s stomach.

“I’ll start the count down then, and kiss my lovely food,” Changmin said, and took his watch.

“Appa, come here quick!” Ji Yul waved at him as he corrected the position of the fireworks, and rushed back to Jaejoong’s side.  Junsu, Yoochun, U-Know and Hero all stopped arguing to look at them as Changmin started the countdown.

“Five!”

“Four!”

“Three!”

“Two!”

“One!”

“Happy New Year!”

They all cheered as the fireworks shot into the sky, and gave their beloved a kiss.

U-Know and Hero kissed, and decided not to argue about the shrimps anymore, as long as they’re clean.

Junsu and Yoochun kissed, and accepted the fact that they are horrible cooks, and that they should buy a grill with smaller gaps between the metal bars.

Changmin and the bag of Doritos kissed, and he vowed to ask Yunho where he got it from because he quite liked it.

Ji Yul and the baby kissed, and she giggled as she hugged Jaejoong’s stomach even tighter, wanting her little sibling to come to the world healthy.

Yunho and Jaejoong kissed, and while he stared at Yunho’s handsome, smiling face, he decided that maybe, just maybe, he could live like this forever.
