Act II - Runaway
“Hello hyung,” Junsu greeted cheerfully when he saw Jaejoong walking into the parlor. “Long time no see.”
Jaejoong smiled, and hugged him. “Yeah, long time no see, Su.”
He led the two to their table, and asked them to sit before he did so himself.
“Ah, so this is your boyfriend?” Jaejoong asked as he eyed the other man. “I’m Kim Jaejoong, Junsu’s cousin.”
The man smiled at him, and took Jaejoong’s hand in his. “Park Yoochun.”
“Park Yoochun…” Jaejoong repeated slowly. “Aren’t you the son of that archeologist?”
“Yes, I am,” Yoochun nodded. “He died during an expedition though.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Jaejoong frowned slightly.
“Ah, no, don’t be,” Yoochun smiled a little. “It was his own choice to go there. I’m sure he had no regrets.”
“I sure hope so…” Jaejoong nodded.
“Hyung, do you want to order something?” Junsu asked as he handed Jaejoong the menu. “You too, Yunho-hyung.”
“I’ll just have what Jae has,” Yunho shook his head.
“Even if I order white chocolate ice cream with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and sprinkles?” Jaejoong asked.
“You can’t eat that anyway,” Yunho pinched his cheek.
“You’re no fun,” Jaejoong shook his head. “I’ll have the green tea ice cream then.”
“I’ll go order it,” Junsu offered, and walked over to the counter.
“So,” Jaejoong started as he looked at Yoochun. “How did you meet my cousin?”
“Well…” Yoochun stretched the syllable. “I met him in a museum. I was there to talk about my father’s findings with the curator. We sort of clicked together, I guess.”
Jaejoong laughed a little. “Clicked together. Did that remind you of something, Yunho-yah?”
“No, we didn’t click. We just fit,” Yunho rolled his eyes.
“Aw, anyway,” Jaejoong turned back to Yoochun. “Are you serious about dating my cousin?”
“As serious as I can be,” Yoochun nodded firmly. “But there is something that has been bothering me.”
“What is it?” Jaejoong asked, lifting an eyebrow in mild curiosity.
“There’s someone out there who wants me dead,” Yoochun said as he frowned, his tone grim and grave. “I don’t mind if she wants only me dead, but if she-“
“Here are your orders,” Junsu said as he placed two plates of ice cream on the table, and sat down.
“I know what you mean,” Jaejoong smiled sympathetically at Yoochun. “It must be hard.”
“What is it?” Junsu asked.
“Oh no, we’re just talking about his father’s last discovery, right, Yoochun-shii?”
“Yes, yes. The curator wants to put claim on it, but I’m sure my father wouldn’t approve of it.”
Yunho looked at them, and merely shook his head. “So we aren’t the only ones with problems,” he commented as he leaned over to reach for the spoon.
“I never said we are,” Jaejoong shrugged, and helped Yunho take one from the case. “But I don’t want anything bad to happen to him.”
“He looks like an impulsive person to me,” Yunho commented, whispering slightly.
“Since when are you a psychologist?” Jaejoong teased.
“No, it just seemed that way to me,” Yunho shrugged. “I’m just afraid things would be ugly. Especially if he refused to tell your cousin of the problem.”
“He’s impulsive, just like what you said,” Jaejoong shook his head. “If he knew, and the girl knew he knew, I don’t even want to think what would happen.”
“I see,” Yunho nodded. “Well, eat up. Don’t think of it yet. You’ll grow old way sooner that way.”
Jaejoong laughed, and hit Yunho’s arm playfully. “I’ve grown old just staying by you.”
“Really?” Yunho grinned. “Then we’ll have to find a way to help you stay young. Do you think some exercise could help?”
Jaejoong merely laughed again, and told Yunho to shut up and eat his share.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“I told you to not get close to him! What’s so hard to understand in that simple sentence!?”
The sound of glass breaking filled the entire room, echoing before it faded quickly, although it was followed by other breaking sounds as a man went mad, his walking stick hitting everything he could find.
Jaejoong sat on the floor, hands covering his ears as tears started streaming down his face, his figure shaking in fear.
“I told you he wants to hurt you! When you two are close enough, he’ll destroy you! Do you want that!?”
Jaejoong shook his head, unable to say anything while he tried his best to muffle his sobs.
“Answer me!”
Jaejoong flinched and winced when the stick hit the floor right beside his foot, a few centimeters away from it. “N-no,” he stammered out, his voice cracking.
“Louder!”
“No,” Jaejoong repeated, hands wiping his tears.
The stick hit the floor again, and Jaejoong instinctively inched away from it.
“This is my final warning,” the man glared coldly at Jaejoong. “If I hear that you two are together again, I’m sending you to another university.”
“No-“
“Oh, and your marriage is in a month. Be ready.”
Jaejoong stared disbelievingly at his father as he walked out of the room. He didn’t even know who she was!
“Jaejoong,” his mother called as she walked into the room, careful not to step on any of the glass shards. “Clean up and get some sleep. You’re going to meet her tomorrow. Be at your best.”
Jaejoong stared blankly at her, and watched as she left him alone.
He looked down at the floor, and before he knew it, he had started crying again.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yunho walked quickly past the corridor, and stopped in front of a very familiar door. One that he had gone through so many times during his time there.
“Come in.”
Yunho smiled a little. He always knew there was someone outside without that someone having to knock on the door.
“Dr. Go,” he called as he walked inside the office, closing the door behind him. “Have you seen Jaejoong?”
“Hm?” Dr. Go looked up from his file. “I thought he was supposed to be with you.”
“Supposed to, yes, but I haven’t seen him,” Yunho sighed deeply.
“I saw him in his office earlier. Try somewhere he might go to when he’s depressed,” Dr. Go shrugged a little. “He looked quite upset when I saw him.”
“Really?” Yunho looked surprised. “I didn’t know.”
“You haven’t seen him,” Dr. Go pointed out, shaking his head.
“Oh. Right. I’ll be going now then,” Yunho bowed at him.
“Oh, right, Yunho,” Dr. Go called before he went out of his office.
“Yeah?”
“Whatever happens, don’t think of me. I don’t mind losing my apprentices if you two can be happy.”
Yunho looked at him, and smiled. “Thank you. I will bear that in mind.”
As the door closed, Dr. Go let out a long sigh. “There go my two best apprentices…”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“I’ll be there in a few minutes, don’t worry,” Junsu said to the receiver as he made his way through the crowd. “I am just two blocks away.”
“The road is crowded at this time. Be careful when you’re crossing.”
“No worries! I’m not a little kid anymore, you know,” Junsu laughed gleefully. He waited for the light to turn green before he crossed the road.
Suddenly, a loud honk was heard.
“Junsu? What was that?”
“Oh, nothing,” Junsu answered, although his voice was a little shaky. “Someone was speeding. Almost hit me.”
“What?”
“It’s nothing serious! I’m okay,” Junsu said reassuringly. “Don’t worry.”
“I… yeah, as long as you’re okay.”
Junsu laughed again. “Of course I am! Well, I’m hanging up now. I’ll be there in a moment.”
As Junsu hung up, Yoochun put his cell phone back in his pocket, and sighed with a disturbed expression.
“So she knew…”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Jaejoong,” Yunho called when he spotted the other man in the garden, sitting on the rock in front of the plant they had planted together. “You’re here.”
Jaejoong looked up at him, and smiled bitterly. “Yes I am.”
“You’ve been crying,” Yunho frowned as he sat beside him. “What happened?”
“My father-“
“Did he hurt you?” Yunho asked, his tone dangerous.
“No,” Jaejoong held Yunho’s hand and shook his head. “Someone told him he saw us together yesterday. He got mad at me.”
“That’s so very not new,” Yunho grunted almost angrily, but then looked at Jaejoong, and kissed his hair softly. “What did he do then?”
“He threatened to send me to another university,” Jaejoong sighed. “And I’m supposed to meet the girl they chose to be my bride today.”
“What!?” Yunho nearly shouted. “But-“
“I don’t want to meet her, Yunho-yah,” Jaejoong sighed, tugging at Yunho’s sleeve. “I don’t want to go. I don’t want to leave. I want to stay here.”
“It seems that things have gone out of hand,” Yunho frowned deeply, holding Jaejoong’s hand in his. “I don’t think we can stay here any longer.”
“You told me, that you’ll find me if I go,” Jaejoong said.
“I will,” Yunho nodded. “I already talked to Dr. Go. He seemed to know about this.”
“He did?” Jaejoong asked. “I feel bad for leaving him. He’s been such a nice and caring mentor.”
“I know,” Yunho smiles at him. “And he cares for us. That’s why he’s letting us go.”
“He’s so selfless,” Jaejoong sniffed. “I could only hope we could take him with us. But sadly, that won’t happen.”
“They need him here,” Yunho shook his head. “Come on, stop crying. We’ll figure something out.”
“Actually,” Jaejoong frowned. “I already planned to leave this city today. I’ll be going off somewhere far away from here, so my family won’t know.”
“I see,” Yunho nodded. “I’ll miss you.”
“That’s why you better come find me quick,” Jaejoong grinned a little. “I’ll be waiting for you.”
“You have to wait for me,” Yunho said jokingly, and kissed Jaejoong softly. “Have a safe trip. Don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of things here.”
Jaejoong smiled at him. “I’m sorry for burdening you.”
“You aren’t. Not at all,” Yunho shook his head. “I’ll give chase once I know where you are, and once I’m sure your freak of a father isn’t on your trail anymore.”
Jaejoong laughed at that, and hit Yunho’s arm playfully. “I’m going then.”
“I’ll see you soon.”
That day, two resignation letters came to Dr. Go’s office.
