Chapter Eight - Bombs

Jaejoong paced around in the bathroom nervously, biting the nail of his thumb anxiously. He knew that it would take time before he was able to use the test kit Changmin had given him, but he suspected it would show a positive result, because he knew neither Changmin nor Aria would do something without a reason.

“Argh… is this why she didn’t give us condoms?” Jaejoong asked in frustration as he sat on the toilet bowl, and held his head. He was tempted to pull his hair out, but he didn’t. “What should I do…”

A loud knock on the door snapped him out of his thought, and he nearly jumped up. “Yes?” he asked, walking over to the door, and opening it slightly. “Yunho? I thought you’re asleep?”

“You took so long to take a bath, so I thought something happened,” Yunho said sleepily as he rubbed his eyes, and stared at Jaejoong. “Did something happen?”

“Um…” Jaejoong blanked. He didn’t know what to say. Should he tell Yunho about the pregnancy test kit? But he wasn’t sure the result would be positive yet, so he shouldn’t right?

Yunho swung the door open completely, and sighed as he pulled Jaejoong into a hug. “You know you can tell me anything, right?” he asked, resting his chin on top of Jaejoong’s head. “You are my responsibility. Whatever happens to you is my concern too.”

“Even if…” Jaejoong paused and shook his head. “Changmin gave me a pregnancy test kit earlier. I know it’s not useable yet, but… I suspect it would be positive. You know how they are.”

“So?” Yunho asked, frowning a little as he pulled back slightly. “What’s wrong with that? Why are you being so jittery?”

“I’m just… nervous, I guess,” Jaejoong admitted with a soft sigh, holding onto the front of Yunho’s night shirt. “I don’t know if… if you want the child.”

“Jae,” Yunho said sternly, holding Jaejoong’s chin up so they were face to face. “Do you know that you have a tendency to ask the stupidest question ever?”

“No, I-“

“Of course I want it! Have I ever hinted otherwise?” Yunho asked as his hold tightened, and he leaned forward to rest his forehead on Jaejoong’s. “Now, let’s go to the basic question. Do you want the child?”

“Yes… yes I do,” Jaejoong said with a hint of a sob. “I’ve always wanted to have another child. Moonbin also wanted a younger sibling, so he wouldn’t be lonely when I was busy working.”

“Then what is the problem?” Yunho asked softly, caressing Jaejoong’s cheek. “You know that I will do anything for your happiness. If the result shows negative, I will do it to you over and over again until it is positive.”

Jaejoong laughed heartily, and wrapped his arms around Yunho’s torso, burying his face in his chest. His body shook with the force of his laughter, but Yunho only smiled contentedly.

“Thank you,” Jaejoong took a deep breath, and let out a relieved sigh. “I’m really, really happy I met you. Let’s go to sleep. I’ll do the test when the time has come.”

“Whatever suits you best,” Yunho shrugged, and slung an arm over Jaejoong’s shoulder, guiding him back to the bedroom, and to their shared bed.

“Good night, Yunho, sweet dreams,” Jaejoong murmured as he kissed Yunho’s forehead, and turned to lie on his back. He stared at the ceiling as he waited for Yunho to fall asleep, and when he felt Yunho’s hand resting on his stomach protectively, he could only smile to himself.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

The five gathered in Aria’s room the night before the bombing for a briefing and they were joined by Yoochun and Junsu who excused themselves from the office by saying they had to visit a relative.

“So, here’s the plan. Yunho and Jaejoong will go to disarm the atomic bomb, and Hankyung and Heechul disarm the bomb. I believe you two are capable of disarming the bomb, and I have supplied a wire cutter for you. I will give a step-by-step guide to disarm the atomic bomb, just because I’m nice and I don’t want any of you to suffer from radiation. Special gloves are inside the suitcase. I also provide a pincer to take out the components, and metal boxes to store them. In short, I’ve prepared everything, so don’t worry.”

“Don’t we get something like a practice?” Yunho questioned as he eyed the suitcase with the timer.

“No. That’s why you have to follow my orders exactly like what I have said. There is no room for error. However, I will buy you time, so you can work in peace. I will also keep myself updated on their next plans. Tomorrow, we will catch all of them. The ones in the Pentagon, and the ones staying back at their office.”

“I see,” Yoochun nodded thoughtfully. “So, what do you want us to get? I know you have another plan in case they have another backup plan to counter these two.”

“How smart of you. No wonder they chose you to be the team leader. Hm… yes. I would like to ask something, but don’t worry, I’ve sent them a message on your behalf. My order should be here tomorrow before noon, and I want it transported to the Pentagon. Is that clear?”

“Sure,” Yoochun shrugged, and shoved his phone into his pocket. “So what should we do now?”

“I have prepared another cottage for you and Junsu to stay. I will give you the orders tomorrow, as your role start after they finished disarming those bombs. Have a good night’s rest.”

“Night,” Yoochun waved slightly as he walked out of the back of the room. He had been there a few times during the development of Aria, and once when it was finished and first started operating. After all, he and Junsu were part of the developer team at that time.

“Oh, and Junsu, please keep an eye on him. Don’t let him destroy anything.”

Junsu chuckled, and bowed at her. “Sure thing. Good night, Aria.”

The five watched them walk away, and looked questioningly at Aria.

“I didn’t know he’s violent,” Yunho commented as he lifted an eyebrow. “Did he destroy something back then?”

“Ah, no, I was just talking about his sleeping habit. He can never sleep properly. And he broke the alarm clock every time he stayed here.”

Their mouth formed an o as they nodded in understanding.

“So, we’ll be back to our cottages for now. At what time should we leave for the Pentagon tomorrow?” Jaejoong asked after a few moments of silence. Being a teacher, a thing he hated was complete silence, because it always made him nervous, or reminded him of a test.

“You will leave at approximately seven in the morning. I believe they should be done installing the bombs by then. I haven’t known exactly where they would install them, so I still have to monitor their movements, and see where they are headed. I will only hack into their security system after they realized the bombs are disarmed, and came up with a backup plan. I’m afraid if I do it sooner, they would attack the nearest police department instead.”

“I get your point,” Changmin nodded as he stood up from his seat. “I’ll be retiring early then. I want to check on Yoochun and Junsu before returning to my own cottage. The four of you should get as much sleep as you can as well, you’ll need it for tomorrow.”

“Okay,” Heechul nodded and waved at him as he walked out of the back door.

“So, off you go. I will wake you up tomorrow morning at five thirty, so you have time to take a shower and eat breakfast first. Don’t even try to engage yourself in tiring activities. I know what you did last night, Yunjae.”

Hankyung and Heechul looked at them with the look that asked ‘You did it already? Wow that’s fast’, and Jaejoong screamed as he frantically shook his head. “It’s not what you thought! Aria! Don’t give them ideas!”

“But you were the ones making such noises. Who told you to-“

“Aaaaaaaaah!” Jaejoong screamed again as he flailed his arms. “We didn’t do anything! Really! Oh, it’s late already, we better go now. See you guys tomorrow!”

And with that said, he dashed out of the room through the back door, while Yunho just raised an eyebrow, and chuckled at his cuteness.

“You know, you shouldn’t tease him like that,” Yunho commented as he shook his head. “I like to see him all worked up, but that thing last night got him embarrassed, so don’t tell anyone about that.”

“Whatever. I found it cute. I mean, not everyone is-“

“Ssh,” Yunho placed a finger on his lips, and laughed softly. “I don’t know how exactly it entered, but yeah…” he then turned towards the remaining two. “And you better get your minds out of the gutter.”

He walked out of the room as well, and into his shared cottage to join his somewhat lover. Meanwhile, Hankyung and Heechul looked at Aria questioningly, but they were dismissed, and told to catch some sleep before the big day.

When they were out of the room, Aria laughed to herself and replayed the recording; the video of what happened last night. It showed the images of Jaejoong and Yunho, one perched on the bed, near the headboard, and the other standing up as his eyes looked all over the room, a bat in his hand.

“Never thought he would be so scared of a mouse. That guy is really entertaining…”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong stood in the kitchen, holding a sizzling hot pan in one hand, frying the egg. He was spacing out, and he snapped out of it, only when Yunho commented about the smell of burning. He quickly turned the stove off, and gingerly scraped off the burnt egg from the pan, before he poured more oil onto it.

“Jae, is there something bothering you?” Yunho asked as he hugged Jaejoong from behind, knowing that it always calmed the older man down, even if only slightly. “Tell me what it is.”

“I’m just nervous,” Jaejoong sighed as he cracked open another egg, and poured the contents onto the pan. “What if I met Moonbin there? What if he asked why I am there? What if he asked me to watch, but I can’t because-“

“Why can’t you?” Yunho cut him off, nuzzling Jaejoong’s neck. “Disarming a bomb doesn’t take long. If everything goes according to plan, you can watch him play. Or I can cover for you.”

“But I don’t want you to,” Jaejoong frowned, holding Yunho’s hand with his free hand. “You’ve done enough for me. I want to do this myself. I can do this.”

“You have a possibility of being pregnant,” Yunho stated. “What if you suffered from the radiation? What would happen to the baby? What would happen to you?”

“Nothing wrong is going to happen,” Jaejoong said as he flipped the egg over. “You worry too much, Yunnie. I’m not going to let anything wrong happen, okay? I’m good with my hands.”

“Really? I think you’re better with your mouth,” Yunho commented playfully as he stuck out his tongue, grinning widely at Jaejoong, and Jaejoong screamed in embarrassment, hitting Yunho’s chest repeatedly as he tried desperately to hide his blushing face. “Careful, you don’t want your egg to burn again.”

Jaejoong let out a yelp, and quickly went back to attending to the egg, leaving Yunho to laugh at how easily embarrassed he was, especially after the mouse hunt two nights ago.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong, Yunho, Hankyung and Heechul all gathered in front of the Pentagon dressed in suits to make them look like important people who came to attend the event. Yunho was the one who held the suitcase they brought from New York, and Heechul carried a much smaller case containing a wire clipper and a splicer.

“Are you ready? They have just finished installing the bombs, and they are to detonate in an hour, when the event would be nearing the end.”

“Yes, we are ready anytime you are,” Yunho said to the small mouthpiece hung near his jaw. He pulled his collar up slightly to hide it from view, and positioned his glasses-which, by the way, would make him look cooler, as Aria had said.

“Great. Yunho and Jaejoong, go to the basement through the stairs, turn right, and go to the dead end. You should see a small metal box containing the nuclear bomb. As for Heechul and Hankyung, go to the west wing, up to the second floor, and find the restroom. A small bag is put in the stall nearest to the windows. That’s the bomb you have to tame. I will re-guide you if you make a mistake in getting there.”

“Okay,” Jaejoong agreed, and looked around. “We will go now. Keep us updated if they have another backup plan, yes?”

“Will do. For now, just focus on your job of dismantling those bombs. I will call you again in a few moments. Good luck.”

“Well, we’ll be off now,” Jaejoong said as he waved to Hankyung and Heechul. “Good luck,” he added, and walked off to the east wing, where the stairs leading to the basement were.

Hankyung and Heechul waved at them as well, and went on their way to the west wing’s second floor’s restroom.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong stepped down the stairs silently, followed by Yunho, and looked to his right. Sure enough, the end of the corridor was a dead end, but it was quite long.

“Careful, don’t make sudden moves,” Jaejoong warned as he walked over to the metal box. “It needs only a little shock to get it going. The bigger one would either be triggered by a gun shot or an implosion, but one this small might only need a hard shake or a bang to a hard surface to get it going.”

“I thought they need a certain mass to keep the fission reaction going? You know, the critical mass,” Yunho commented as he followed Jaejoong, and stopped when he did.

“Yes, but it’s compressed. Atoms are small particles, and uranium atoms are particularly big. They compress the atoms, so that they are packed closer together. This method is good but dangerous because the explosion would be stronger than a normal atomic bomb, because the repulsion force is bigger,” Jaejoong explained, squatting down in front of the box.

“I don’t think I get it,” Yunho shrugged and placed the suitcase down. The timer was down to five seconds, and soon enough the lock clicked, opening the case automatically. “What would you need?”

“I need the gloves,” Jaejoong said as he looked at the box. “A pincer, preferably, and four metal boxes. Does she provide them there?”

“Yeah, all you need is there,” Yunho nodded, and took out the gloves, handing it to Jaejoong who accepted it gratefully and quickly put them on. Yunho then handed the pincer to Jaejoong, and took out the four small boxes that were placed at the four ends of the case, and held there with a tie.

“Good, don’t make any movements while I work,” Jaejoong warned, and slid closer to the box. He carefully took it from the ledge, and placed it down on the floor. He opened the lid, and pulled a small round thing with the pincer, then placed it in a metal box, which he handed to Yunho.

“That is the neutron generator, the most important part of an atomic bomb,” Jaejoong explained as Yunho closed the box, and tied it up in the case again. “An atomic bomb needs an extra neutron to start the fission chain reaction. When it’s first triggered, the two subcritical masses will combine together to form a critical mass, and the force will make the neutron generator emits an extra neutron to start the reaction.”

Yunho nodded thoughtfully, trying to process all the extra information he thought he would never need, and watched Jaejoong extract another small piece from the metal box. He silently wondered if Jaejoong had worked as a surgeon before, because just as he had said, he was extremely good with his hands. His hold was steady, and his maneuver was smooth.

“This is the conventional explosive,” Jaejoong said as he placed it in the second metal box. “This is the thing that will trigger the detonation of this bomb. Without the neutron generator, the bomb is far less dangerous, but still dangerous to people near it,” he added, and waited for Yunho to seal the box before moving on.

“And those two are the uranium masses?” Yunho asked as he saw two separate lumps remaining in the box.

“Yes,” Jaejoong nodded, and took one out, placing it in the box. “in the subcritical mass zone, it is fairly safe, as it doesn’t emit the gamma ray that is dangerous. With these extracted and put in different boxes, the bomb won’t be able to explode. Not properly anyway.”

Yunho waited for Jaejoong to place the last mass in the fourth box, and they placed the tools back in the case, and locked it up. “So, let’s go now. I believe Aria has sent some FBI agents here to help us. I don’t want to be near this thing all the time,” he added, looking at the case.

Jaejoong merely laughed at his commented, and nodded in agreement. “Let’s just go up and see if we can find someone we know. I think Yoochun and Junsu have gone here too.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Hankyung and Heechul reached the restroom at the time Yunho and Jaejoong were about to finish disarming the atomic bomb, and Heechul went to the fourth stall while Hankyung stayed near the door to make sure no one walked in there and found them.

Heechul kneeled in front of the bag, and opened it to reveal a timed bomb. He was glad he worked for a police department before, as he was taught the basics when he first joined. Taking out the wire clipper, he quickly traced the wires to determine which ones he needed to cut.

“Okay, first, the wire to the primer…” Heechul mumbled as he traced the cable, and retraced it to make sure he got the correct wire. He snipped it, and let it rest on the floor.

“Next, the wire to the reactor,” he said to himself, and traced the wires again. They were not colored, so he couldn’t cut the wire based on the colors. He snipped the wire to the reactor, and sighed in relief.

“One more to go…” he frowned slightly, looking at the bundle of wires. “The one to the ignition timer…” he groaned as he started tracing the wires one by one as they were bunched up together.

“Someone’s coming,” Hankyung said as he looked through the door. “Go inside the stall and put the bag on top of the toilet bowl,” he instructed, and Heechul nodded before he lifted the bag up, and rested it on the lid of the toilet bowl, careful not to hit it against a hard surface.

A young man walked into the restroom, and entered the first stall. Hankyung opened the door to the fourth stall which Heechul left unlocked, and peered inside. “Are you finished?” he asked.

“Yes,” Heechul said in relief and pride as he showed the timed bomb that was inactive. The timer was off, and three wires were cut. “Let’s go back down. I suppose she’ll tell us what to do now.”

“Yeah, let’s,” Hankyung agreed, and they zipped the bag back up, placed it on the floor the way it was before, and walked out of the restroom quickly.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Moonbin chatted with his friends from the trumpet section as they waited for their trumpets to arrive. All their musical instruments were transported with a van from the small hotel where they were staying to the Pentagon. The teacher shouted at the children to gather as the van neared.

“Hey, aren’t you excited?” a little boy asked Moonbin as he waited in line to get his own trumpet. “It’s less than an hour before the concert! I hope my parents are watching me!”

Moonbin blinked as he looked at the boy, and smiled. “Yeah, I’m excited,” he said with a wide grin. “And I’m sure my mother is watching me.”

“How can you be so sure?” the little boy asked. “I mean, yeah, they can see us on TV, but what if they missed us?” he laughed a little. “I can only hope.”

“I don’t know,” Moonbin shrugged as he waited for his friends to get their instruments first before he took his because he didn’t want to fight with the others to get it first. “I just know that my mother’s watching.”

He finally got his turn after a few minutes of waiting, and he took the last case of trumpet. He opened it, and frowned, before he raised his hand to catch the teacher’s attention.

“Yes, Moonbin? Is there something wrong?” the teacher asked as she walked over to him.

“This is not my trumpet, Miss,” Moonbin said plainly as he pointed at the tip, near the mouthpiece. “Mine has my mother’s signature right over here. It’s written in permanent marker, so it can’t be washed off.”

“Ah?” the teacher looked surprised. “That’s strange. The other children all got their own trumpets,” she commented as she looked at the case.

“It’s okay,” Moonbin said after a while. “I will look for it after the performance ends. For now, I’ll just use this one. It’s still a trumpet, after all.”

The teacher smiled at him, and patted his head lovingly. “Thank you, Moonbin. Please do your best.”

“Okay,” Moonbin smiled sweetly at her, and walked into the backstage, carrying his case of trumpet with him, and promising himself to look for his trumpet after the performance was over. He loved his trumpet, and that was because it was the first birthday gift he received from his mother.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Bad news, guys. Gather in front of the hall right now, and I will fill you in on the details. Yoochun and Junsu are waiting for you there.”

Yunho and Jaejoong looked at each other in worry before they rushed to the hall, where they first started, and Heechul and Hankyung did the same. They soon gathered there, and Changmin joined them.

“I received news that they have managed to smuggle a new Hex. I had just checked their agenda again to know what their last backup plan is. It is now put in a small jewelry box under one of the seats in the hall. It takes too much time to look for it, although I know the general area where it is. The trigger is also installed in one of the trumpets used by the orchestra children.”

“So what should we do?” Jaejoong asked in worry. “It might even be Moonbin’s trumpet that is installed with the trigger…” he added, biting his lower lip anxiously.

“That is what I’m trying to figure out. I didn’t expect them to get the Hex this fast. But if we manage to foil this plan, they will not have anymore plans to accomplish their goal.”

“But you prepared the counter plan already,” Yoochun shot back as he rolled his eyes in annoyance at Aria’s worried act-because he knew she really wasn’t. “I have received your order from yesterday. They’re in the van right in front of this building.”

“Ah, great timing. So it seems that we are always a step ahead from those guys after all. I will explain the plan to you shortly, as we don’t have much time. Go get the thing I have ordered from the van. Hankyung, Heechul, go to the control room with Changmin. Junsu, go monitor the FBI agents and make sure they law low. I don’t want those guys to realize we have put agents on guard here. Yoochun, you go with Yunho and Jaejoong.”

“Yessir!” they all said to their own mouthpieces, and dashed off to the corresponding places. The speech had started, and they didn’t have much time.

“I will begin hacking into their security system. This is the most important part of the mission, and this will determine the fate of all the people who are present here, including yourselves. There is strictly no room for error, and I ask that whatever you do, do it with caution.”

Hankyung, Heechul and Changmin got into the control room, and they sat down in front of the monitors as it suddenly showed codes that went by so fast they missed them. Soon, the words “security hacked” appeared on the screen with a beep, and they were asked to enter the information to be sent to the crime organization’s mother computer.

“I will take care of this. You two take care of the security in this building, make sure no suspicious people can go in without being checked, and no one can go out without being checked,” Changmin said as he quickly typed a letter, following the template Aria had provided him.

Meanwhile, Junsu went to join the other FBI agents scattered all over the building, and gave them orders to stay on guard all over the place.

Yoochun walked to the van, and took a guard’s uniform before he handed it to Yunho. “You’ll need it for her plan,” he simply said, and handed him a gun. “Oh, and you’ll need this too,” he added quickly as he handed a black plastic bag to Yunho who looked at him in question.

“My plan is to interrupt the concert. If the note that produces the frequency needed to explode the Hex is never hit, the Hex will not detonate. However, it needs great timing and precision. It’s the high F near the end of the song. Intervene with the concert before it finishes, and make sure they will not continue it.”

The three looked at each other, and Yunho spoke up hesitantly, “So I’m the one who’s supposed to interrupt the performance?”

“Yeah… I think…” Jaejoong nodded, and turned to look at Yoochun. “What do I need to do then?”

Yoochun moved over and whispered something to Jaejoong, who simply nodded in understanding. He then turned to Yunho, and said, “The speech is going to finish any minute now. I believe you still remember the national anthem? Go get changed, and I’ll see you in the hall.”

“Good luck, Yunho,” Jaejoong said as he patted Yunho’s back. “Make us proud. I know you can do it.”

“Thanks,” Yunho grinned at him. “I won’t put you, your son, or our potential child in danger. Don’t worry.”

“Yaeh,” Jaejoong smiled at him weakly, an uneasy feeling gripping him. “Be careful,” he warned.

“Of course,” Yunho kissed him softly, and turned around. “I’ll see you after this whole ordeal is finished. And I want you to give me your best smile.”

“I will,” Jaejoong nodded, and held onto Yunho’s shirt. “But promise me you will come to see me after this is finished. You have to survive.”

“I will,” Yunho said simply, and walked off, towards the nearest restroom where he could change his clothes into the guard’s uniform.

Jaejoong watched him go, and let out a deep sigh, wondering why the heavy feeling in the pit of his stomach didn’t go away.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong paced in the hall, walking down the steps as he followed the attendant who took the invitation card from him, dressed in the same black dress he wore on the day he exchanged the trumpet. This time, he was wearing high heels, and he stopped once in a while to steady himself again.

Moonbin looked up when he saw someone walking down the steps-since everyone else was already seated-and his expression brightened when he saw him.

“Umma, you came,” he mouthed and grinned at him, and waved, although he did it slowly, not wanting to attract attention and be seen.

Jaejoong smiled, and nodded at him. “Of course. You are too important for me,” he mouthed back, and sat down in an empty seat, and thanked the attendant who showed him the place. “Make me proud,” he added, and gave a thumb up sign to him.

Moonbin grinned wider, and gave a thumb up sign to him as well. The speech ended, and the orchestra’s performance started. The conductor walked on the stage, and started directing the little children.

Jaejoong watched in anticipation and anxiety. His heart beat so fast he was afraid it would jump out of his ribcage. Cold sweat trickled down the side of his face as he tensed up slightly when the song was nearing the end.

Suddenly, he heard rushed footsteps down the stairs, towards him. Someone jumped onto the table, and shot the ceiling, shouting at them to stop the performance. The conductor jumped away and ducked to hide, and so did the little children. It was a state of chaos. Everyone rushed to the exits, and struggled to get out first.

“Don’t shoot!” Jaejoong shouted as he looked up at the children who were rushing out, and at the officers who held their guns up, aimed at the man standing in front of him.

“Umma!” Moonbin screamed as he tried to run towards him, but was pulled out by his teacher, guided outside to safety along with the other children.

The president, the ministers, members of the senate, and other important people were also escorted out of the room, by the guards. And then, a bang was heard.

“Yunho!” Jaejoong screamed in terror when he saw a bullet embedding itself into his back, the force causing him to fall forward, onto the floor. “Yunho! Yunho, don’t die!”

Guards came over to him, pulling him out of the room, but he struggled to break free from their grasps. “No! He’s innocent! You have to help him! Don’t let him die! Please!” he begged as tears started streaming down his cheeks, but his pleas were unheeded as he was dragged out of the hall forcefully.

“Yunho… don’t die… please… don’t leave me…”
