Chapter Six - Erase
Streams of sunlight came through the blinds, and fell right on top of his face, causing his vision to go red, and his eyebrow to twitch in annoyance. He let out a sleepy groan and turned around, burying his face into the pillow, and snuggling onto a soft, warm bolster that bended when given force.
Wait… bolster?
“Jaeeeeeeee…” he whined childishly as he gripped onto the bolster, although he knew full well he could never crush it. “Go back to sleep,” he added, still whining, as he pulled the cover up to his chin.
The door opened and closed with a click, and he heard footsteps nearing the bed he was lying on. It was a king-sized bed, and it could probably hold the four of them together since they were all so skinny. The footsteps stopped about a feet away from him, and he cracked an eye open, only to be greeted by pink floral pattern of an apron.
“Wake up, sleepy head,” Jaejoong said as he tapped Yunho’s temple with the wooden end of a spatula. “Hankyung and Heechul had come over for breakfast earlier, and they’re now working on their mission. Aria told me we’re to leave in an hour, so if you want to take a bath and have breakfast, I really suggest you get up now.”
“Not a morning person,” Yunho complained as he buried his face in his pillow again, and pulled the cover up to his head. “Wake me up in thirty minutes.”
“Ah, well then,” Jaejoong said, sighing in disappointment. “I guess I’ll just have to take a shower by myself, all cold and shivering, and eat breakfast alone, since someone doesn’t want to get up and keep me company.”
Before he could even take a step away from the bed, he felt an arm slung over his shoulder, and his body dragged over to the door while Yunho said “Show me where the bathroom is!” excitedly.
“Yah, Yunho!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
The lights were brighter than normal neon lamps, and the jewelries on display shine even more. There were various types of jewelries, from earrings to bracelets, from the ones with gems to the ones with valuable stones only, and from the ones made from platinum, to the ones made from silver.
Heechul stood in front of a display case, his eyes furrowed in concentration as he studied the various diamond jewelries in front of him, his hand playing with the hem of his shirt. He sighed, and turned to look at Hankyung who was doing the same.
“What was the distinct feature of the Hex, she said?” Heechul asked in defeat as he walked over to Hankyung, and stand beside him. “I never expected for them to actually develop a Hex. Creating a small stone with the exploding power of dynamite is not an easy task.”
“Especially when said stone is triggered by a particular frequency, and not fire,” Hankyung shrugged as he turned around, and walked over to another case, followed closely by Heechul. “I believe she said that the Hex would look slightly more opaque than diamonds. She also said they’re putting it in a necklace.”
“We have about thirty minutes before their men come here to get the Hex,” Heechul noted as he looked at his watch. “She should have been more specific. I saw quite a few slightly opaque diamonds earlier.”
“And you know they’re diamonds?” Hankyung asked as he lifted an eyebrow, clearly interested. “How did you check?”
“I weighed them, actually. I asked the clerk the amount of carat, and weighed it,” Heechul shrugged nonchalantly, as if he had just talked about weighing onions. “It works, but it takes too much time.”
“So what do you suggest we do now?” Hankyung asked, starting to get frustrated as they had checked half of the cases, yet hadn’t found the Hex yet.
“Hey look,” Heechul suddenly said when his eyes caught something. He walked over to a display a few feet away from them, and he leaned over it, studying them.
“What’s wrong?” Hankyung followed quickly, not wanting to miss out on anything. “You found it?”
“I think I do,” Heechul said proudly as he pointed at a white golden necklace. A piece of transparent stone was placed in the pendant, and the color was slightly opaque.
“How do you know it’s not a diamond?” Hankyung asked curiously, since Heechul hadn’t weighed it yet.
“It’s too big to be a diamond,” he said, pointing at the other necklaces in the same display case. “See? This one is the biggest among these. Jewelry stores usually don’t sell a diamond this big.”
Hankyung called the clerk, and asked for her to pack the necklace for them in a small case, just so that they could carry it around easily.
“Are you sure you want to buy this one, sir?” the clerk asked as she eyed the necklace. “This is not a diamond. We’re not sure what this is, but it looks beautiful, so we sold it anyway. Of course, the price is much lower than the price of a diamond, but if it’s diamond you’re looking for, you’ve chosen the wrong piece.”
“No, it’s okay,” Hankyung smiled at her, and handed her the credit card Aria had made for them. “I want that one. I want something beautiful, not diamond.”
“Very well, sir. This way.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong walked back and forth between the kitchen and the dining room as he carried plates of food in both hands, placing them on the table, and going back to retrieve more plates. They still had thirty minutes before they were summoned to Aria’s room for a briefing, so they were taking it slow.
“Cheater,” Yunho accused as he sulked, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “You told me you need someone to keep you company, yet you left me in the bathroom alone, all cold and shivering.”
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes as he placed the plate of bacons on the glass table. “There was a heater inside, and the water was warm. I already took a bath before you did, and I know you wouldn’t wake up if I didn’t say that.”
Yunho sulked even harder.
“Stop sulking and help me get the rest,” Jaejoong said as he returned to the kitchen, and Yunho grudgingly obeyed, walking with him to the kitchen.
“I’ll take them back out, you go there first,” Yunho said as he took the three plates in his arms, and urged Jaejoong to walk out to the dining room first. Jaejoong agreed and set the table while he placed the remaining plates on it.
“Yah, this is not breakfast, this is a feast,” Yunho commented when he saw the amount of food served on the table. “I don’t think we can finish them all.”
“Changmin is coming over for breakfast,” Jaejoong laughed softly as he placed the third set of eating utensils down on the table, and walk over to his own seat. “I suggest you start eating before he finishes them all.”
“Aish, I forgot about him,” Yunho sighed as he quickly sat down, and took his fork, taking a lot of food from the plates, and shoving them into his mouth.
Just then, the doorbell rang, and Changmin came in, a huge grin on his face. “Wah, that smells so delicious!” he complimented as he took a seat across the two, and took his fork.
“Eat up then, we still have time,” Jaejoong said as he smiled warmly. “You’re still young, aren’t you? You need this more than us do.”
“But that doesn’t mean I don’t need any!” Yunho added quickly as he prevented Changmin from taking all the bacons for himself. “I need nutrients too!”
“You’re not a plant,” Changmin said simply, munching on his fried egg. “Anyway, Aria said your mission might take quite a while, because it’s riskier. But she also said she has faith in you two, so you better not disappoint her.”
“I wouldn’t dare,” Jaejoong shook his head, and took a bite of his sausage. “We will do our best, and we will not fail, right Yunho?”
“Yeah,” Yunho agreed, nodding absent-mindedly. “We must not fail.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yunho and Jaejoong walked to Aria’s room, and approached the huge monitor, joining Hankyung, Heechul and Changmin who had gone there first while they washed the dishes first. It wasn’t that they were laid back, but the target hadn’t reached the city yet, and it would be futile to wait there.
“So, ready for your first mission? We have gotten the Hex here, and your mission is to exchange the trumpet that has been installed with the frequency modifier to match with the Hex with a normal trumpet. This is an important part of the mission, so it is crucial that you two do not fail, or blunder in any way. Is that clear?”
“Crystal clear,” Jaejoong and Yunho said in unison as they saluted Aria. “When and where should we wait for the trumpet?”
“The trumpet is transported by a van. I have predicted that in an hour, they will reach the gas station down the road. You are to distract them, and snatch it while they are, and take it to the nearest hotel. I have booked a room under your name, and I will give further instructions there.”
“Very well. We will go now, then,” Yunho said as he looked over at the three. “The sooner the better. After all, we still need to devise a plan to get them distracted.”
“Actually, I’ve prepared some things that might help you accomplish that. Look in the trunk of the car I prepared for you, and you will see what I mean. But yeah, if you’re afraid he’s going to drift again, feel free to go early.”
“You’re lucky you don’t get to experience his drifting,” Yunho rolled his eyes, and stepped sideways to evade Jaejoong’s hit. “I’ll see what you have prepared for us, and we’ll go from there. But I assure you, we will not fail.”
“There is no room for failure. You have to succeed on the first try, and you have to obey my instructions word for word. One little break of my rule could cause the failure of this mission, so don’t question what I told you to do, because it’s for the best. And don’t try to protest. What I said goes. Is that understood?”
“Yes sir!” Jaejoong and Yunho both said, and they excused themselves as they walked out of the mansion, and to the driveway where Changmin parked the van yesterday.
They walked over the van, and spotted a sleek black sedan beside it. It was a Mercedes-Benz S600 car, and Jaejoong nearly squealed in happiness when he saw it. Ever since he worked for Aria, he had been able to drive expensive and prestigious cars, and he was glad for that.
“Let’s see what she has prepared for us,” Jaejoong said as he walked to the trunk of the car and opened it, while Yunho followed, and peered inside, before promptly bursting out in laughter, his face flushing a little, and his hands clutching his stomach.
Yunho bit his lip in an attempt to stop laughing when he saw Jaejoong’s pout, but he couldn’t stop when he looked into the trunk again, and saw what she had prepared for Jaejoong. Apparently, Aria had prepared a black suit, a tie, and sunglasses for Yunho, and a short black dress, a fox fur coat, sunglasses, and a blonde wig for Jaejoong.
“Looks like she thinks you’re pretty,” Yunho commented as he grinned from ear to ear, and Jaejoong whacked the back of his head hard, causing him to stumble forward and nearly hit his forehead on the lid of the trunk.
“Shut up,” Jaejoong mumbled as he quickly closed the trunk, and walked to the driver seat, opening it and quickly getting inside, starting the engine.
“Aw, are you mad?” Yunho asked as he also got in, and sat in the passenger’s seat, fastening the seatbelt on reflex. “I was only joking. But you know that you fit those clothes better than I do.”
“I guess… but still,” Jaejoong sighed as he shoved the gear stick back, and pulled the car out of the driveway. “I don’t like wearing such exposing clothes. Bleh. They make me look like a slut.”
“You have worn women’s clothing before?” Yunho asked, mildly surprised from the newest revelation. Sure, he had thought that Jaejoong looked a lot like a woman, but he never thought he would cross-dress.
“Yeah… during pregnancy. I couldn’t find anything else to wear,” Jaejoong said simply, and moved the gear to Drive mode. “They’re okay because they’re big and comfortable.”
“Okay…” Yunho nodded doubtfully, and looked forward at the road, watching as the scenery seemed to come at him, and pass just like that. When Jaejoong was drifting, he didn’t have the chance to enjoy it, so he took his chance now.
People walked back and forth, out and into their houses, or up and down the streets. Some carried groceries bags-after a late shopping-and some carried nothing. Some were talking with their friends, some were talking to the phone, and some weren’t doing anything at all.
Since it was the suburb area, the place was still fairly uninhabited, and not many people could be found there. The founders of Project Aria had made sure its presence would remain unknown, as it was well-hidden behind trees and other foliages. No one had ever wandered that far, not even curious little children.
The drive to the gas station wasn’t far for it didn’t take long, and Yunho could see why the criminals chose that place to re-fuel their van. It was deserted, with only one pump available, and it was far from even the nearest building, although he could see the hotel she meant from there.
“So, you’re going to change into those clothes or not?” Jaejoong asked as he eyed the short black dress in distaste. He picked it up with both hands and examined it. “Good thing that fur coat covered something, at least.”
“Hey, look, she even provided the boots,” Yunho commented when he took the suit, and saw a box underneath it. He was about to laugh, but Jaejoong’s look made him stop.
“Pssh, if this is not such a life threatening situation, I would never agree to this,” Jaejoong huffed as he quickly picked up all the things he would need, and Yunho was somehow reminded again of a little child.
“Or maybe because it is, she’s using this in her favor,” Yunho shrugged as he closed the lid of the trunk. “I’ll go change first. You wait here, okay?”
“Why don’t I change first?” Jaejoong frowned as he placed the clothes on top of the trunk. “I would take longer to change for sure, right? You don’t even have to change!” he accused.
“But I need to see a mirror,” Yunho defended himself as he took a step backwards, towards the public restroom. “And, if you change first, when I go to change, someone might come up to you and try to seduce you. You don’t want that to happen, right?”
“Yeah… I guess you’re right,” Jaejoong sighed and nodded. “Go change then. I will wait here. We still have a lot of time. Meanwhile, you should think up of a plan to distract them.”
“Sure,” Yunho agreed as he walked off to the restroom at the side to change. He didn’t take long, and when he came back, Jaejoong’s jaw nearly dropped at how he looked.
“Hey now, do I look that handsome?” Yunho joked as he took off his glasses, and put them in the pocket. “I found a razor and a small bottle of shaving cream inside the pocket of the suit earlier. She should have told me to shave from yesterday.”
“That’s just like her. Maybe she wants you to conclude what she wants from you yourself,” Jaejoong suggested as he laughed a little. “But you look a lot more like U-Know now. I didn’t even realize you two were twins back then.”
“Thanks, I’ll take that as a compliment,” Yunho bowed at him, remembering all those times girls would flock around him only to ask his address and home phone number just so they could visit or call U-Know. He was popular with the girls because he was polite, and tactful-he knew what to do in any kind of situation.
“I’ll go change now,” Jaejoong said, and went off to the restroom while Yunho thought of a plan to distract those henchmen sent to transfer the modified trumpet.
He looked inside the backseat and found the case with the normal trumpet inside, and he took it out. It was a normal black case, and he silently wondered if the one the criminals used would look the same.
Minutes later, Jaejoong came out of the restroom dressed in the dress, fur coat, and boots. His transformation was even more shocking because Yunho didn’t notice it was him until he approached him and talked to him.
“Do I look that different?” Jaejoong wondered as he took off his glasses as well, and held onto them with his black leather gloves-clad hands.
“Yeah, especially with the wig and the glasses,” Yunho admitted as he reached out and straighten a few loose strands of the wig. “You have the talent to be a secret agent, you know.”
“That’s why those are called disguise, Yunho,” Jaejoong commented with a laugh, putting the glasses back on. “They are worn so others will not recognize the wearers. I guess if I still look the same, it doesn’t serve its purpose. I didn’t expect myself to look so different, though.”
“Anyway,” Yunho cut off as he looked at his watch, and at the one-way road in front of them, “they are coming in five minutes. I have thought of a plan, and you are the key point, so I have to trust everything to you.”
“Okay. I’ll do my best.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Hey Aria,” Changmin called as he typed something in his laptop, and paused to look up at the supercomputer. “Do you have anything against those two or something?”
“Eh? What made you think so? And have you finished messaging those two non-helpful agents?”
“Hey, if it weren’t for them, those four would have gone through more troubles, right?” Changmin chuckled as he clicked the ‘send message’ button, and closed his laptop. “After all, Yoochun and Junsu helped U-Know in developing you. You should be thankful to them.”
“Whatever. They’re getting on my nerves with their constant fighting. You know I’ve tried getting them together, but it apparently didn’t work.”
“Was that why those two were stuck in the same car that day? Junsu complained about it to me before he knew it was you all along,” Changmin shrugged, and smiled a little at the memory of his two friends. “And about your first question, I just got the impression that you have something up your sleeve for the two of them.”
“Why, how perceptive of you. I do have plans for them.”
“Oh? May I know what they are?” Changmin lifted an eyebrow. “Are you trying to do whatever you did to Junsu and Yoochun to them?”
“Partly, yes, but I have bigger plans for them. After all, they’re not idiots, and they need only a little push to get them together. Those two… even if you push them into a janitor’s closet and lock them there for three hours, nothing except bickering would happen. They are hopeless.”
“They’re not,” Changmin shook his head, and leaned back on his chair. “You are a computer, Aria. You don’t know how human’s emotions work. They might be arguing now, but they actually care for each other a lot. They need those arguments to calm themselves down-to make them know that everything is still how they were.”
“And that’s not a good thing. They need to progress.”
“They will, eventually. I believe they will,” Changmin nodded slightly, and looked at Aria again. “So, what are those plans you have for the two?”
“I don’t want to tell. You’re probably going to stop me or tell me to think about it again. You’re always like that.”
Changmin raised an eyebrow at the hint of a sulk, and laughed lowly. “Try me.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
A small van pulled up into the gas station, and two men of large built got down from it, quickly going over the pump to re-fuel their van. When they were walking around, however, their gaze caught something, and they stopped.
Jaejoong stood beside the car, his hand on the lid of the trunk as he bent down slightly, inspecting the flat tire with a grim expression on his face. He stood back up and sighed, crossing his arms in front of his chest, and mentally squealed in glee when both of them walked over to him.
“What happened, Miss?” one of them, the taller one, asked with interest as he eyed the flat tire, but then his gaze quickly moved to Jaejoong’s long creamy legs that were exposed.
“Oh, this,” Jaejoong said with a sigh, shaking his head disdainfully. “My car’s tire got flat suddenly, and I don’t know how to change it. Plus, I don’t have a spare tire with me,” he pursed his lips unhappily.
“Oh, we can help you with that!” the shorter man suggested gleefully as he grinned almost lecherously, moving over while Jaejoong unconsciously took a step backward.
“Oh, you can?” he asked, a smile on his face. “I would have asked my chauffeur to change it for me, but I told him to go get something important from a client, so I’m left here wondering what I should do. I would be very glad if you can help me!”
“Sure,” the taller man nodded, and went back to their van. He unlocked it, and took the spare tire as well as the jackscrew before walking back to the sedan.
While the two men were occupied with changing the tire, Jaejoong who stood beside them gave signal to Yunho who was hiding behind the trees. He quickly walked to the still unlocked van, exchanged the suitcase, and walked over to the other side of the station.
“Finished,” the shorter man announced proudly as he stood up, and wiped his sweat with his sleeve. His partner took the flat tire, and lowered the jackscrew before taking it back.
“Do you want to keep this tire?” the taller one offered as he showed the tire to Jaejoong who only looked at him in confusion, and slowly shook his head.
“It’s okay, you can take it. I’ll ask my chauffeur to buy a spare tire next time before we go somewhere far,” Jaejoong complained. “Maybe you would need it.”
“Oh, okay then,” the taller one agreed. “I’m going to check the pump first to see if it has finished,” he said to the shorter one, and walked off.
Yunho carefully walked over to them with the suitcase in hand, and he covered the symbol of the organization printed on top of the lid with his body. It was small, but still noticeable.
“Ah, there’s my chauffeur. Thanks for your help, gentleman,” Jaejoong beamed at the shorter man, and bowed at him, before walking over to the passenger side.
“I am sorry for taking so long, milady,” Yunho said regretfully as he put the case down, trying to be as unsuspicious as possible, and opened the door for Jaejoong, letting him get in.
“Well, I’ll be off now, then,” Jaejoong said with a smile as he got into the passenger seat, and waved at the shorter man before Yunho closed the door, and walked over to the driver side.
Yunho got in, and put the case in the backseat before he fastened his seatbelt, waiting for Jaejoong to do the same, and pulled out of the gas station.
Just as they were out of sight, the taller man came rushing to the shorter one with a panicked look on his face, all the while shouting “Get in! We’re going after them! They exchanged the case we brought with a different one!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Yunho held onto the steering wheel tightly, his knuckles whitening a little as he bit his lower lip. His foot pressed on the gas pedal hard because he didn’t want to be caught by them, since he was sure they had noticed the different case, but he wasn’t brave enough to speed like Jaejoong.
“When was the last time you drove?” Jaejoong asked as he noticed the rough way he handled the car. “You look so tense. Try to relax a bit. We’re not going to crash into anything.”
Jaejoong took off the wig and the sunglasses, and put them in a plastic bag before he shoved it under his seat. He was about to take off the fur coat as well when his phone suddenly rang, and he picked it up.
“Yes? What should we do next?” Jaejoong asked as he put it into loudspeaker mode, and placed it on the dashboard. “We’ve got the trumpet with us now.”
“Good job. Now, go to the nearby hotel I mentioned earlier. I have prepared a plan to buy you time so that they would not be able to follow you back to Project Aria. First go to the receptionist desk, and ask for the key to the room under your name. Use the elevator. Don’t worry, I have “played” with their system a bit, so the elevator to your left would be on stand by at the first floor.”
“What should we do in the room, then? Won’t they look for us in the rooms? Or ask the receptionist where we are?” Jaejoong asked after a while, because he noticed that Yunho was too nervous and too focused on the road to actually say anything. He knew it wasn’t a good idea to let Yunho drive, but it wouldn’t do to make Yunho the lady and him the chauffeur.
“Ah, that is the next step of the plan I have prepared. I have sent a notice to the receptionist, signed by the manager of the hotel, to not tell anyone which room is booked by whom. They would have to check the rooms one by one, and I know what to do to make them skip your room. After they have moved approximately two levels above yours, you are to go check out, and back to Project Aria. I will activate the GPS system to guide you back through the one-way road.”
“So, what is it that we’re going to do in the room?” Jaejoong asked curiously. “You’re not telling us to jump out of the window, or put the ‘don’t disturb’ notice on the door, right?”
“No, of course not. I can’t tell you here, but I will tell you later. Don’t worry, it’s a fool-proof plan. I don’t like to put my agents in danger.”
“Then why didn’t you give us a plan to get through the security check in the airport? And one to distract those two while we exchanged the trumpet?” Jaejoong demanded as he frowned slightly.
“That is, my friend, because I trust you and your brain. I also want to know what you would come up with. Humans are creative when they want to be. It’s amusing sometimes, but otherwise impressive. Your act just now, I would categorize it as impressive. Congratulate Yunho on thinking up of that kind of scenario.”
“Will do after he’s not as nervous. Or if we’ve reached Project Aria before I have the chance to tell him, then you should tell him yourself,” Jaejoong said with a chuckle, and hung up the call. He turned to Yunho, and said, “Slow down and prepare to turn left. The parking area is spacious, so you can park it quickly.”
“Okay,” Yunho nodded almost stiffly, and he released the gas pedal slightly before he turned left, and got into the parking area of the hotel. He quickly turned the engine off after the car was parked somewhat messily at the corner, and unfastened his seatbelt. He got out of the car, taking the suitcase with him, and waited for Jaejoong to do the same.
Jaejoong watched as the van rushed over to the hotel, and he knew they’d seen them turn to the hotel. “Let’s go,” he asked, and walked into the hotel lobby with Yunho. They walked up to the receptionist, and he smiled at her warmly.
“Can I help you?” the receptionist asked as she stood up from her chair.
“We’ve booked a room under the name of Jung Yunho and Kim Jaejoong. We’re in a hurry, by the way, so can you give us the key right now?” Jaejoong requested as he leaned over slightly.
“Sure,” the woman nodded and checked her file, before handing them a key. “Fourth floor, third room to your right after you walk out of the elevator. Have a nice stay!”
Jaejoong smiled and waved at the woman as he walked over to the elevator with Yunho, and pressed the up button. True enough, the left elevator dinged as soon as he pressed the button, and the door opened, allowing them to come in.
“Fourth floor, third room to the right…” Jaejoong mumbled as he pressed the four button, and watched as the door close. The trip up wasn’t long, and they reached the fourth floor.
They walked into the room with the suitcase, and Yunho placed the case down on the bed as he looked around, taking in the interior design of the room.
“So like a high-class hotel, hm?” Jaejoong commented as he sat down on the bed, taking his boots off, and nursing his legs. “She really has a good taste in everything.”
“I guess, yeah,” Yunho agreed as he sat down on the king-sized bed, on the other side of it. He looked out of the window, but then quickly pulled the curtains close.
“What do you think she wants us to do?” Jaejoong asked idly as he stared at his cell phone, waiting for her to call. Even though she used Moonbin’s number to call him, he still couldn’t call her back.
Just before Yunho could say anything, the phone rung, and Jaejoong nearly dropped it in surprise. He picked it up, and put it on the bed, not forgetting to switch it to loudspeaker mode.
“Ah, I see that you’ve gotten into the room safely. Those men have arrived here as well, but they started their search from level one, so you have approximately thirty minutes to prepare before they reach your room.”
“Thirty minutes? That’s a long time,” Yunho commented. “So they’re doing a thorough search on the rooms?”
“More or less. Now, I will tell you my plan, but as I have said, you have to obey what I said. No protest or complaint. Is that agreed?”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” Yunho dismissed it as he sat back on the bed. “So what is it? You better tell us quick.”
“Aw, so eager to do it. Well, it’s so simple, really. Here goes… I want you to put the suitcase under the blanket, strip off your clothes, throw them all over the room, and make love under the blanket to hide the suitcase from view. Simple, eh? Good luck! I’ll be waiting for you back at Project Aria.”
