Chapter Five - Bars and Storms
“You sure you going to be okay?” Junsu asked as he peeked into the kitchen, watching Jaejoong who was still busy with the dishes after breakfast.
“Of course,” Jaejoong nodded, putting the clean dish on the rack. “Now go to school. You don’t want to be late.”
“Can you be late?” Yoochun asked as he walked into the living room.
“I got a call from the principal, anyway. I’d use that excuse,” Jaejoong shrugged. “I’ll see you guys later.”
“Right,” the two nodded. “See you.”
Jaejoong nodded back, and paused, looking outside the window in the kitchen.
“Looks like something bad is going to happen,” he commented as he watched the birds and the clouds.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong stood in front of the principal’s office again. Most of the students had asked him why he was called there so often, but he simply told them that his application letter was still incomplete, so he had to give a few papers.
“Come in.”
Jaejoong walked into the office, and closed the door behind him.
“Ah, Jaejoong-shii,” the principal nodded at him. “Please, have a seat.”
“Good morning, Kim-shii,” Jaejoong greeted as he sat on a chair in front of the desk.
“So, how are they?” he asked. “I’m sorry I called you here so often. The other students must have started wondering why.”
“Ah, no, it’s okay,” Jaejoong quickly shook his head. “It’s not like I’m staying here anyway.”
“I guess you’re right,” the principal nodded. “So, your report?”
“Um… well, I managed to figure out their bad and good habits,” he admitted, mentally telling himself to note that another of Yunho’s bad habit was speeding.
The principal nodded thoughtfully, urging him to continue.
“I… will discuss about it with you later. After I have made them leave their bad habits,” Jaejoong started out uneasily. “I hope you don’t mind.”
“Ah…” the principal mumbled. “Of course I don’t mind. I’m sure the others won’t mind as well.”
“Thank you,” Jaejoong bowed at him. “I will make sure that it happens before graduation day.”
The principal looked at him, and smiled gratefully. “We appreciate your efforts, Jaejoong-shii. So far, none of the caretakers had been able to stay with them for more than two days.”
“Err… well, I think they can sometimes be too much,” Jaejoong commented. “But they’re actually nice.”
“I’m glad you think so. You are now dismissed.”
“Thank you,” Jaejoong said as he stood up. “Please excuse me,” he added, and walked out of the principal office, sighing in relief when he was outside.
“Did he give you a hard time?”
Jaejoong nearly shrieked and jumped up in surprise when the voice suddenly spoke.
“What are you--!?”
“Ssh!” Yunho clamped his hand over Jaejoong’s mouth. “Not so loud! Do you want to announce my presence here to the whole world!?”
“Dream on!” Jaejoong huffed as he pried Yunho’s hand away. “But really, why are you here? Don’t you have class like, about right now!?”
“I’m not cutting class, in case you’re wondering,” Yunho grinned. “I asked permission to go to the restroom, and happened to see you on my way.”
“Yunho,” Jaejoong heaved a deep sigh. “The restroom is that way,” Jaejoong pointed the opposite direction.
“Whatever, I wasn’t about to use that one,” Yunho shrugged. “So, since you’re out, why not go back to class?”
“I thought you wanted to go to the restroom?” Jaejoong looked at him strangely.
“That’s what I told the teacher. He doesn’t have to know,” Yunho grinned at him. “Now let’s go already,” he said, and tugged Jaejoong’s hand.
“Okay, okay, I can walk!” Jaejoong protested as he quickly walked to keep up with Yunho.
They arrived at their class, and got to their seats.
“What did you tell him?” Yunho asked as he sat down beside Jaejoong.
“Nothing you don’t want me to,” Jaejoong replied simply as he set his bag down.
“What if I don’t want you to talk about good things?” Yunho challenged.
“Who says I’m talking good things about you?” Jaejoong looked at him pointedly. “As if there’s anything good about you,” he added, huffing.
“Hey, at least I’m good-looking,” Yunho grinned at him, and Jaejoong stomped his foot.
“Shut up and pay attention to class.”
“Abusive.”
“Pervert.”
“Meanie.”
“Shut up.”
“Mr. Jung, Mr. Kim!”
“Sorry!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong stopped in front of their apartment building-he had stayed back to go to the nearby convenience store to buy some snacks earlier-and looked up at the sky.
The doves that usually flew around the top of their apartment building suddenly looked so restless.
“Hm…” Jaejoong mumbled. “I sure hope it’s not going to be a heavy storm.”
He walked into the building, and climbed up to their apartment. “I’m back!” he announced, and went straight to the kitchen after taking off his shoes.
“Ah hyung! You’re back!” Junsu exclaimed as he bounded into the living room.
“Yes I am,” Jaejoong nodded. “What is it?”
“Yunho won that dance competition, so we’re going to celebrate,” Junsu said.
“Oh? How exactly?” Jaejoong lifted an eyebrow as he put away all the snacks except a small chocolate bar, which he unwrapped rather hastily.
“We’re all going to a bar nearby to have a few glasses of drinks,” Junsu shrugged. “Do you want to tag along?” he asked, although he knew full well Jaejoong despised going out to bars.
Jaejoong looked thoughtful as he threw away the paper wrapping, and tore the foil wrapping to reveal the chocolate inside. “No, I don’t.”
“I thought so,” Junsu said.
“If you thought so, then why did you ask?” Jaejoong rolled his eyes.
“Well, Yunho-hyung insisted that I ask first,” Junsu shrugged.
Jaejoong looked outside again. “I suggest you to not go though.”
“Oh? Why?” Junsu asked curiously.
“It’s going to storm soon,” Jaejoong noted as he looked at the storm clouds that were slowly rolling in, making the sky gray instead of the usual blue.
“Isn’t it just going to be raining?” Junsu asked. “It doesn’t look bad.”
“It doesn’t look bad, but it is bad,” Jaejoong sighed tiredly. “I suggest you not go, but if he insists, then I don’t think he’ll listen,” he shrugged.
“Well,” Junsu shrugged. “We’ll try to not take long.”
“Yea… have fun,” Jaejoong sighed. “But wait, I’ll talk to him.”
Junsu looked as Jaejoong walked out of the kitchen, and to Yunho’s room.
“Hey,” Jaejoong called as soon as he stepped inside.
“Oh it’s you,” Yunho mumbled as he went back to reading.
“Yah! What do you mean by that!?” Jaejoong protested as he stomped over, and took the book from Yunho’s grasp, placing a bookmark inside first.
“It means just that,” Yunho shrugged. “What do you want then?”
“I heard you four are going out today,” Jaejoong stated.
“Not on a date, but yes,” Yunho nodded. “What about it?”
“Can’t you cancel it?” Jaejoong frowned. “It’s going to storm.”
“Aish, you’re worrying too much!” Yunho shook his head. “Go take a bath, and sleep early if you don’t want to wait for us!”
“I’m not making things up!” Jaejoong whacked Yunho on the head with his book. “You have to respect your hyung!”
“You!? My hyung!?” Yunho asked in surprise as he looked at Jaejoong disbelievingly.
“Hey, just because I’m shorter doesn’t mean I’m younger!” Jaejoong pouted, and placed the book beside him. “If you get caught in a storm, don’t tell me I didn’t warn you.”
“Of course,” Yunho agreed.
“Fine then,” Jaejoong walked out of the room, and back to the kitchen.
Yunho looked over at him, and shook his head. “That guy worries too much.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong sat on the couch, staring at the television screen as he tried to focus and comprehend what the newscaster was saying since it was in Chinese. Whoever thought of having a dish up there was twisted.
He changed the channel, and stopped at a particular movie featuring old actors, when suddenly a thunder cracked, and the image went static.
“Wha-!? Hey! We paid not for nothing!” he cursed as he threw the remote onto the couch in his anger, pouting as he crossed his arms in front of his chest.
Outside, the storm was starting, and it got heavier and heavier at each passing second.
“I wonder where they are right now,” Jaejoong mumbled to himself, and took out his cell phone, but it wasn’t working. Probably because of the storm.
As he was about to drift into slumber-Yunho did tell him to sleep early if he wanted-the phone rang loudly, surprising him and waking him up.
“Yeoboseyo?” he asked as soon as he picked the phone up.
“Hyung!”
“Junsu! Where are you!?” Jaejoong demanded.
“Um, I’m in a phone booth somewhere. It’s near that coffee shop down the road.”
“Why aren’t you back here?” Jaejoong frowned.
“We can’t. Public transportation stopped operating because of the storm, and we can’t walk home in it.”
“I told you not to go!” Jaejoong huffed.
“Well… Yunho-hyung sure looked sorry enough.”
“Aish you guys are unbelievable!” Jaejoong sighed. “I’ll come over there. Don’t go anywhere!”
He didn’t let Junsu say anything before he hung up, and took his jacket, putting it on. He searched the whole apartment for umbrellas, and found four-since there were only four people there originally.
“This will have to do,” Jaejoong mused to himself, and used one umbrella.
He walked out of the apartment building, and rushed towards the coffee shop.
“Hyung!” Junsu called when he saw Jaejoong running through the rain.
Jaejoong turned to glare at Yunho. “I’ll talk to you later,” he stated flatly, then gave the umbrellas to all of them. “Use it and go home.”
“What about you?” Yoochun asked.
“I’m okay,” Jaejoong shook his head. “I have my jacket with me.”
“It’s not exactly water-proof,” Yunho pointed out.
“Shut up,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes. “Come on, move it!”
“Right!”
“Hey Jae,” Yunho said as he turned to face Jaejoong.
“What?” Jaejoong asked.
“I’m sorry,” Yunho sighed, and bowed at him. “I will make sure no one goes out to bars again. Especially when you tell us it’s going to storm.”
Jaejoong looked at him, and smiled a little. Sometimes, Yunho could look really like a little kid.
“That’s okay,” Jaejoong sighed, smiling a little. “Just make sure this doesn’t happen again, okay?”
“Of course,” Yunho agreed. “Now let’s go,” he said as he opened the umbrella, and tugged Jaejoong’s hand.
The two of them walked through the rain together. The umbrella wasn’t big, so they had to stand very close to each other so they didn’t get rained upon.
“There is a reason why I hate rainy days,” Jaejoong muttered under his breath.
“I heard that,” Yunho said.
“You are supposed to, dummy,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes.
“You’re not subtle at all,” Yunho shook his head.
“Why should I be?” Jaejoong frowned.
Not long after, they reached their apartment building, and quickly got inside thankfully while closing their umbrellas and turning them around to dry them.
They walked up to their apartment unit, and walked in, thankful for the dryness and the warmth since the heater was turned on by Jaejoong earlier.
“Go take a bath, you all,” Jaejoong said as he took their umbrellas, and line them up near the shoe rack. “You’ll catch a cold otherwise.”
“What about you hyung?” Junsu asked worriedly.
“I’ll take one after you all,” Jaejoong answered simply. “I’ll be fine.”
Yunho looked at him dubiously. “You sure? You don’t look too good.”
“I’m fine,” Jaejoong insisted, but just as he had finished saying that line, he collapsed.
“Jaejoong-ah!”
