Chapter Two - Chance Meetings

“Jaejoong-shii, can you go to the shop down the road and buy a few things for me?” Junsu asked as he walked out of the master bedroom carrying a glass of orange juice.  “Oh, and pick Moonbin up before you go.”

“Okay,” Jaejoong looked at the clock and agreed, seeing it was almost two.  He got up from the couch, put his book under the coffee table, accepted the shopping list, and walked out of the apartment.

Ever since the stroller incident with Yunho, Jaejoong had decided to not bring the stroller with him, as Moonbin was fully capable of walking on his own.

“Hey Jae,” a voice greeted him, and he quickly pressed the close door button, although he knew he had to get into the box.

“Oi, what’s wrong?” Yunho asked as he held his hand over the sensor, not allowing it to close.  “Aren’t you going?” he asked curiously, looking over at him.

“Yes, yes I am,” Jaejoong sighed heavily, and stepped into the box, standing in front of Yunho.

“Where are you going?” Yunho asked.

“Picking Moonbin up and buying some things for Junsu-shii,” Jaejoong shrugged.

“Want me to go with you?” Yunho offered.

“Oh, no, I’m okay,” Jaejoong quickly shook his head, and he almost bumped his head to the wall of the box.  “Uh, I mean, yeah, how hard can it be?” he laughed nervously.

“If you say so,” Yunho shrugged, and the elevator dinged.  “We’re here,” he said as the door slid open, and he pushed Jaejoong’s back gently, urging him to step out.

“I can see that,” Jaejoong blinked.  “Well, I’ll be going first then,” he excused himself, and walked out of the apartment building, and to the nearest train station.

Yunho watched him as he walked out hurriedly, and smiled slightly as he shook his head at Jaejoong’s antics.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Moonbin, come on, shopping isn’t going to take long,” Jaejoong pleaded as he held onto Moonbin’s bag with all his might, preventing him from going anywhere else.  He was suddenly reminded of walking a huge dog, but quickly pushed that thought away.  What would Junsu say?

“I hate shopping!” Moonbin shouted at the top of his lungs.

“Yeah?  Well, tough luck, kiddo, I need to do this for Junsu-shii,” Jaejoong rubbed his temple, hoping to relieve the forming headache there.

Moonbin pouted, but finally relented after Junsu’s name was mentioned.  Jaejoong scolded himself for not mentioning the name earlier.  Perhaps he could guilt trip Moonbin?

“Come on,” Jaejoong said, pulling on Moonbin’s hand, and walked towards the convenience store nearby to buy the groceries Junsu asked for.

“Stay with me, don’t stray,” Jaejoong warned as he took a basket from the side, and started filling it with the things listed on Junsu’s shopping list.

He walked down an aisle, and picked a packet of sausages from the shelf.  “That’s the last.  Now we can go home,” he said as he turned around, only to find no Moonbin there.

“Oh shit,” he cursed loudly as he put his basket down and ran towards the middle pathway of the aisles.  “Moonbin!” he shouted as he rushed through the aisles, trying to find the little kid.

“Moonbin!  Where are you!?” he shouted again, still running around the store as people started looking at him strangely, but he ignored them.  “This isn’t funny!  Where are you!?”

“Jae?” Yunho asked as he walked towards him, holding Moonbin’s hand while Moonbin looked up at Jaejoong almost questioningly, sucking his thumb.  “I found him over the toys section.”

“Moonbin!” Jaejoong exclaimed when he saw the little boy.  He immediately went on his knees and hugged him tightly.  “Oh my God… don’t scare me like that.”

“Thank you, Yunho-shii,” Jaejoong said as he looked up at Yunho and smiled at him.  “You helped me twice,” he added, picking Moonbin up and carrying him.

“Hey, no worries, I’m his friend too,” Yunho shrugged.  “And yours too, if you want,” he added.

“Ah,” Jaejoong looked at him, and sighed.  “Yeah… of course,” he nodded.  He still felt uneasy as he remembered what Rina told him yesterday and decided it’d be better to keep his distance.

“You need help?” Yunho asked.  “I’ll carry him,” he offered.

“Eh, no, no need,” Jaejoong shook his head.  “You’re here to buy something right?  I don’t want to bother you.”

“No, I’m just buying a packet of bubble gum,” Yunho said, showing the small packet in his hand.  “It’s okay, I’ll help,” he said as he took Moonbin from Jaejoong’s arms.  “Why don’t you go get your basket?”

“Okay,” Jaejoong agreed, and went to retrieve the basket he had left earlier.  He walked over to the counter and found Yunho queuing for them.

Not long after, they went back to the apartment building together.  Jaejoong and Moonbin got out of the box first, while Yunho stayed since he stayed upstairs.

“My house is on the twelfth floor,” Yunho said.  “Room G.  Come over sometimes if you want to,” he laughed, and waved as the door slid close.

Jaejoong waved back as he smiled uneasily, and suddenly had a very bad feeling when he heard a very audible click behind him, and noticed that his grocery bag was gone.

“Moonbin!  Open the door!”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Yunho sat on his couch, holding onto a mug of coffee as he placed a thick book on Chinese history on his lap, flipping it to the last page he read.

Suddenly, the door bell rang.  He looked up questioningly, and placed the book and the mug on the coffee table, before walking to answer it.

“Jaejoong?” he asked when he saw the person standing in front of his door.  “What are you doing here?  I did tell you to come over, but I didn’t expect you to do it this fast.”

“Shut up,” Jaejoong pouted.  “Moonbin locked me out again, and refused to open it.  So it’s either you help me persuade him to open it, or I’ll have to stay here for two more hours until Junsu-shii comes home.”

“I think I’ll choose the latter,” Yunho grinned as he moved aside.  “Come in.  Moonbin likes to be a brat, but I’m sure he’ll get used to you soon.”

“I sure hope so,” Jaejoong sighed as he slumped on the armchair, pulling his legs up and leaning on it.  “Wake me up after two hours,” he announced, and promptly fell asleep.

Yunho walked back to the living room after locking the door, and laughed when he saw Jaejoong asleep on his couch.  “Like a little kid…” he mumbled.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong woke up to the sound of beeping alarm, and his hand instinctively shot out to turn the darned alarm off.  However, when his hand suddenly bumped into a bedside table, he shot up awake, looking around and taking in his surroundings.

He was in a big and nicely decorated bedroom with white as the dominant color, lying on a king-sized bed, the cover pulled up to his chin-it’s around his waist now-and the alarm clock on the bedside table, atop a small piece of paper which looked like some kind of note.

Hey Jae,

I had to run, so I won’t be able to wake you up.  I set the alarm to, though, hope you get up in time and read this note.  I’m meeting my cousin again.  This is my room, in case you’re wondering, and I left a cup of coffee at the kitchen if you want it, along with a piece of cake.

The key to my apartment is on the coffee table.  Please lock it when you leave.  You can return the key whenever you can.  It’s a spare key anyway.

-- Yunho

Jaejoong then noticed it was half an hour before Junsu was supposed to go home.  He’d have enough time to do everything he needed to.

Getting out of the bed, he stretched as he yawned, and put the pillow and cover back in place.  He got out of the room to the kitchen, and ate the offered food.

Suddenly, his phone rang, and he nearly jumped up in surprise and spilled his coffee on the dining table.  Thankfully he didn’t, and he quickly answered the call.

“Yeoboseyo?”

“Hey Jae!  Are you busy?”

“I don’t think so.  Why?”

“Do you want to go to a bar tomorrow?  Shiwon and I are going.”

“Oh.  I’ll see if I can.”

“Don’t you have nights off?”

“Yes, but… I’ll check it first, okay?  I’ll tell you later.”

“Okay, but don’t take too long in deciding!”

“Of course.”

“See you.”

“See you.”

He put the dishes in the sink and washed them so he wouldn’t feel bad later, and walked to the coffee table to get the key.  Afterwards, he left the apartment and locked it.

“Hopefully I’ll never go there again,” Jaejoong sighed.  “And hopefully Junsu-shii will never know about this,” he added, and got into the elevator box.

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“Hey Jaejoong-shii,” Rina greeted as she walked into the kitchen carrying a feather-duster with her.  “Do you want me to clean up your room?”

“Eh?  Oh, no need.  Don’t bother, Rina-shii,” he shook his head quickly as he looked up from the pot of stew he was making.  “I can do it myself.”

“Oh, okay,” Rina shrugged.  “Where were you earlier?”

“Moonbin locked me out again, so I stayed somewhere else until Junsu-shii got home,” Jaejoong shrugged, stirring the stew slowly as he occasionally sipped a little to check the taste.

“Where?” Rina asked.

“A friend’s apartment.  Why?” Jaejoong asked back.

“No,” Rina shook her head.  “Just be careful about what I told you.  If he caught you, you’d be over,” she shook her head and sighed.  “That’s why I can’t go after Yunho.”

“Yunho?” Jaejoong asked in surprise.  “The Yunho who stays on the twelfth floor?”

“You know him?” Rina frowned.

“Yes.  He helped me the first time I got locked out by Moonbin,” Jaejoong shrugged.  “So… you like him?”

Rina fell silent.  “Were you staying over at his apartment earlier?”

“Eh?” Jaejoong was taken aback slightly.  “Well… uhm…”

“It’s okay,” Rina shrugged.  “I’m not going to tell anyone.”

“Okay, yes, I was there,” Jaejoong sighed.  “But only because he refused to help me persuade Moonbin into opening the door for me,” he added quickly, defending himself.

“I see,” Rina nodded thoughtfully.  “Just be careful though.  Who knows if Junsu-shii caught you or something.”

“Yes, I will,” Jaejoong nodded and bowed at her.  “Thank you for the warning.”

Rina nodded and walked off to the washing room, taking out the clothes she had put in earlier.

“Moonbin!  Dinner’s ready!  Come on out!” Jaejoong shouted as he poured some of the meat stew onto a small bowl, and placed it on the dining table, along with a spoon.

Moonbin walked out of his room, clad in his pajamas, and looked up at Jaejoong.  “What’s for dinner tonight?” he asked, getting up onto the chair.

“Meat stew,” Jaejoong said as he sat down beside Moonbin.  “Do you like it?”

Moonbin looked down at the bowl, and took a sip of the stew.  “It’s nice.”

“You think so?” Jaejoong asked happily.  “Then eat all you want.  I made a lot.”

Jaejoong watched in glee as Moonbin downed his third bowl of stew and asked for the fourth helping.  He liked it when his cooking was appreciated.

“You’re a good cook,” Moonbin said after he was satisfied with the stew.  “Make more food for me.”

Jaejoong laughed and ruffled Moonbin’s hair.  “I will if you stop giving me heart attacks, and locking me out of this apartment,” he said.  “Deal?”

“Deal,” Moonbin agreed excitedly.  “I want to eat pasta tomorrow!”

“Okay, pasta it is then.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

“And so, Goldilocks slept on baby bear’s bed…”

Jaejoong looked over when he noticed Moonbin was already asleep, and smiled.  He pulled his cover up to his chin, and kissed his forehead before turning the lamp off.

“See you tomorrow,” he said, and walked out of the room.

“Jaejoong-shii?” Junsu asked when he saw Jaejoong walk out of Moonbin’s room.

“Yes?” Jaejoong asked.

“There’s a meeting tomorrow, and I’m supposed to bring you and Moonbin to the seminar,” Junsu said, sighing a little.  “Think you can make the time?”

“Ah, of course,” Jaejoong agreed.

“Thank you.  I should bring my husband with me as well, but I don’t know where he is,” Junsu sighed heavily.

“Your husband?” Jaejoong inquired curiously.

“Yes, haven’t I told you?” Junsu asked back.

“No, not yet,” Jaejoong shook his head.

“Oh.  It’s Mr. X.  He’s been busy with company matters after he took control of it from me.  I was the original owner, but since I had Moonbin, he told me to focus on taking care of him,” Junsu explained.  “Sometimes it frustrates me, because he’d be away for a long time.”

“I’m sorry,” Jaejoong shook his head.  “I didn’t know.”

“Don’t be,” Junsu pursed his lips.  “I guess it’s for the best anyway.  Moonbin is my life, not him.”

Jaejoong smiled a little.  “I can see that,” he said.  “Moonbin loves you very much.”

“I know,” Junsu grinned slightly.  “That’s because I love him too.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong lied on his bed, his left hand holding onto his cell phone, and earphones connected to his phone were plugged into his ears, helping him listen.

“Yeoboseyo?”

“Chullie… I had to go somewhere tomorrow.”

“Oh?  Until what time?”

“I suspect up to nine.”

“Then we’ll go after nine.”

“Is it okay?”

“No, Shiwon can’t come.  But I can go with him, and then go with you.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Hey, don’t sweat it.  It’s your job.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

“Don’t stress yourself over trivial matters.  Take care.”

“See you Chullie.”

“See you.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong sat in the center of the room, massaging his temples as he held Moonbin close to him, watching the other kids play around in the playhouse.

He suddenly wondered why he was even there, but when he looked at Moonbin, he remembered Junsu.

He moved back to the corner, and sat there.  “Be good, okay, Moonbin?” he asked.

”Yes,” Moonbin agreed and sat on Jaejoong’s lap.

“Good boy,” Jaejoong patted Moonbin’s head.

How could he not notice it earlier?  The way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, and apparently it worked, even when the “man” was still so very young.

Two assistants came in talking to the nannies, and the nannies walked over to them, leaving the children in their care alone in the playhouse.

“Aish!  How could they!?” he growled to himself as he got up, and walked to the center of the room.  Inhaling deeply, he prepared himself to speak.

“Kids,” he called.  “Don’t stray anywhere from this room, play only with blunt objects and don’t even try touching sharp objects, and be careful!  Don’t fight with others!”

The kids looked at him for a few moments before nodding, and resumed their playing.

Jaejoong smiled in satisfaction as he claimed back his spot at the corner of the room, and sat with Moonbin.  “Want to do something?” he asked.

“Do what?” Moonbin asked back.

“I don’t know, what do you want to do?” Jaejoong asked again.

“Eeteuk-hyung usually read stories to me, or sing to me,” Moonbin said as he thought deeply.  “Yunho-hyung… err… he played sports with me.”

“Aish,” Jaejoong sighed.  “I guess I’ll read you a book then?” he asked, looking around for anything to read, but didn’t find anything. “Is there anything else?”

“Why don’t you sing to me?” Moonbin pouted.

“I’m not confident,” Jaejoong laughed uneasily.  “Come on… there’s gotta be something else we can do.”

“But I want to hear you sing!” Moonbin protested, crossing his arms in front of his chest.  “Eeteuk-hyung said everyone who takes care of me will be able to sing very well!”

“Surely I’m an exception,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes, but Moonbin kept pouting.

“Aish, fine,” Jaejoong sighed and pulled Moonbin up onto his lap.  “Let’s see… what do you want to hear then?”

“I don’t want to hear children songs,” Moonbin said.  “What about… Lover’s Concerto?”

“How did you know that song?” Jaejoong asked, clearly surprised.  Did Moonbin grow up too fast, or was he trapped in the body of a little kid?

“That’s for me to know, and for you to never find out,” Moonbin giggled.

“O…kay, this is seriously freaky,” Jaejoong thought to himself.  “Lover’s Concerto it is then.”

He leaned back on the wall, pulling Moonbin with him, closed his eyes, and started singing, making gentle rocking motions to lull Moonbin to sleep.  Soon enough, the song was finished, Moonbin was still awake and hyper, and somehow the playhouse was very, very silent.

“You lied!  You told me you can’t sing!” Moonbin pouted.

“I only said I’m not confident with my voice!” Jaejoong defended himself.

He looked around and noticed that every kid there was looking at him now.

“What!?  I’m not going to sing anything else!” he protested.

The two assistants came again to call them all forward and to go upstage, leaving the children in their care while they were away.

“Moonbin, can you stay here by yourself?” Jaejoong asked in worry.

“I don’t want to!” Moonbin protested.

“But I have to go upstairs,” Jaejoong reasoned.

“No!” Moonbin shook his head firmly, and suddenly every kid in that place was holding onto his legs, pulling him down, yelling “Don’t leave us!”

“Ouch!” Jaejoong rubbed his behind.  “Why am I so unlucky?”
