Chapter Thirteen - Birthdays and Memories
“Are you feeling better now?” Junsu asked as he looked into Jaejoong’s room, carrying a tray of soup with him.
“Much better, thanks,” Jaejoong got up and helped him carry the tray.
“Good. I think Yunho-hyung mentioned something about taking you out today,” Junsu nodded.
“He did?” Jaejoong lifted an eyebrow. “I didn’t know.”
“You know now,” Junsu shrugged. “Oh, by the way, I’m going out somewhere with Changmin and Chunnie. So lock up when you’re leaving, yes?”
“Of course,” Jaejoong nodded. “Have fun.”
“Thank you,” Junsu grinned and walked out of the room.
Jaejoong looked at the calendar in his room, and sighed a little.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Ready to go?” Yunho asked as he entered Jaejoong’s room.
“Yah, didn’t Junsu lock up when he went out?” Jaejoong huffed, and placed the empty bowl on the tray. “Yeah, just let me put this in the kitchen.”
“Don’t you want to change?” Yunho asked.
“So you can watch me?”
“No! I mean, well, if you want to, I can get the tray to the kitchen.”
“Oh.”
“Oh is right. So?”
“No, it’s okay,” Jaejoong shook his head, and carried the tray himself, exiting the room as Yunho followed behind him. “Where are we going anyway?”
“Somewhere you’ll like,” Yunho grinned.
“You sound so sure about that,” Jaejoong laughed, and placed the bowl in the sink, submerging it in water.
“That’s because I am,” Yunho shrugged. “Let’s go then.”
“Right. Let’s go.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Wow, this place is huge!” Jaejoong exclaimed excitedly as he looked around the small forest they were in.
“You like it?” Yunho asked, smiling a little as he watched Jaejoong run here and there, looking at the trees, and the small animals inhabiting the forest.
“Yes!” Jaejoong grinned. “Thank you!”
“This is part of your birthday gift,” Yunho patted Jaejoong’s head. “Now, let’s get inside.”
It was a small hunting ground created by a businessman. It was a natural forest, but all dangerous animals, including snakes, were killed off before it was made a recreational place. Many people came there to hunt because they still offered hunting with bows and arrows, and because they had a place where you could ask for the cook to make dishes from what you had caught inside that day.
“Thank you again, Yunho-yah,” Jaejoong looked up at him. “I know this isn’t cheap.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Yunho shook his head. “Consider it as a practice for your upcoming competition.”
“You know about that?” Jaejoong asked disbelievingly. “How?”
“Oh, I have my resources,” Yunho chuckled. “It’ll be your first solo competition, no?”
“Well… yeah… and that’s what made me nervous,” Jaejoong sighed. “I guess I’m too used to having you two with me.”
Yunho smiled and patted his shoulder. “I’ll be there,” he said. “Promise.”
“Promise?”
“Yes,” Yunho confirmed. “Now let’s get inside. Won’t want the tickets to go to waste.”
“Okay!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Jaejoong raised his bow, and pulled the string back as he aimed it at the hare that was stopping by a tree trunk, munching on its bark.
He released the arrow, and right before the hare jumped off to approach another tree trunk, it was stabbed by the sharp end of the arrow, and died on the spot.
“Ugh,” Jaejoong closed his eyes and looked away. “Get it for me, Yunho-yah.”
“Come,” Yunho said as he held Jaejoong’s hand, and walked towards the hare while Jaejoong was still closing his eyes, not wanting to see the dead rabbit.
“Don’t get it near me!” Jaejoong panicked.
“Hey, I didn’t know you’re afraid of blood,” Yunho said as he bent down to pick the hare up.
“Don’t let go of my hand!” Jaejoong shrieked in panic as he flailed blindly, and successfully managed to whack Yunho’s head. “Oops, what was that?”
Yunho bitterly rubbed his abused head. “You sure you want to hold my hand? I have blood on it.”
“Yunho!”
“Okay, I was just kidding,” Yunho sighed, and grabbed Jaejoong’s hand again. “Come on, I’ll give this to the cook first, and we can continue hunting.”
They walked back to the small grill where the caught animals were brought to be cooked and eaten later.
“Hey Yunho,” Jaejoong called out.
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry.”
“What for?”
“For…” Jaejoong trailed off. “For this. It’s not easy to go back and forth, and it takes a lot of time. I know that.”
Yunho looked at him, and sighed.
“You’re going to get old faster that way,” Jaejoong shook his head.
Yunho ignored him. “This is your birthday gift, Boo. If you don’t enjoy it, then the whole point is lost, right?”
“I guess,” Jaejoong nodded.
“Right. Then, get moving,” Yunho tugged Jaejoong’s hand.
Jaejoong nodded, and caught sight of the bloody hare when he looked down.
“Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“So,” Jaejoong started, looking at the plates in front of them. “You think you can eat this all up?” he asked, scrunching his nose up as he felt himself getting queasy.
“Maybe they should’ve given a limit,” Yunho sighed. “Do you think we can ask them to pack these foods so we can bring them back to your apartment?”
“Or maybe we shouldn’t have made a competition to see who got the most,” Jaejoong looked at the table, and looked away quickly. “Anyway, let’s… start eating?”
“Yeah, let’s,” Yunho nodded, and reached for a plate of grilled deer.
Jaejoong looked around, and finally settled with rabbit satay.
After they’d returned to the grill the third time, they decided to have a competition, and see who could kill the most animals. Then, they immediately went on a killing spree.
They finally stopped when it was two o’clock, and the result was a tie. They were disappointed at first, but when they saw the amount of animals they killed, they were horrified.
“I’m sorry, dear little rabbit,” Jaejoong sighed as he picked up a stick, and start eating the satay.
“Don’t say that, you make me feel guilty too,” Yunho sighed as he looked down at his plate. “Maybe we shouldn’t have gone here in the first place.”
“Aw,” Jaejoong cooed as he reached out to hold Yunho’s hand. “Don’t feel bad. I’m thankful I can home here.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. I’ve always wanted to go here, but never had the time to,” Jaejoong smiled. “Now, let’s finish eating, and bring back some for the kids.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Hey Jae,” Yunho said as they pulled over in front of the apartment building. “Look at the backseat.”
“Hm?” Jaejoong turned around, and nearly gasped.
“Like it?” Yunho smiled at him. “That’s the rest of your present.”
Jaejoong squealed in delight and quickly undid his seatbelt, opening the door quickly, and getting to the backseat.
“I’ll assume you like it,” Yunho said as he watched Jaejoong’s reaction in amusement.
Jaejoong opened the box, and grinned widely. “How do you know I like this?”
“Junsu,” Yunho shrugged. “I bought them in a rush though.”
“It’s alright,” Jaejoong said as he quickly took the box containing his favorite chocolate cake, and the stuffed bunny doll that was placed on top of it. “Thank you for the presents.”
“You’re welcome,” Yunho replied. “I’ll come over tonight. Will you be having a dinner party or something?”
“I guess so,” Jaejoong confirmed. “Well, I’ll go first then. Call me when you’re coming.”
“Of course,” Yunho agreed. “I need to pick U-Know up first. See you later.”
“See you,” Jaejoong waved, and watched Yunho’s car zoom off before he walked into the apartment building, and up to their apartment unit.
“Happy birthday umma!” Junsu, Changmin, and Yoochun cheered loudly as they blew paper trumpets that were used mostly for New Years-since Jaejoong allowed absolutely no party poppers inside.
Jaejoong blinked for a few moments, before smiling widely at them. “Thank you kids,” he said, motioning at them to come forward, and hugging them all. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome~” Junsu grinned. “Ah, what’s this? Takeout?” he asked, holding up the boxes of food.
“No, those are the food from the hunting grounds,” Jaejoong shook his head. “Long story short, Yunho and I had a competition to see who’s the better hunter, and we kinda overdid it.”
The three sweat dropped.
“Anyway, I’ll store the cake for later,” Jaejoong said as he walked into the kitchen. “So no sneaking into the kitchen to eat the cake before I allow you to.”
“Okay!” the three quickly agreed.
“And I will be working on dinner now, so don’t come into the kitchen. Go take a bath before having dinner, okay?” he asked.
“Yes~!”
Changmin paused as Junsu and Yoochun quickly went to Junsu’s room, and then walked into the kitchen. “Hey umma,” he called as he sat down on chair.
“Yes? What is it Min?”
“I just… wanted to tell you.”
“Hm?”
“You remember that time, when you fell off a cliff?”
“Ah… yes, why?”
“That time, it was actually Yunho-hyung who saved you.”
Jaejoong paused.
Changmin fell silent.
“What?” Jaejoong blinked.
“Erm, yeah, it was Yunho-hyung who saved you,” Changmin repeated. “The two of them were there, but only Seven-hyung’s name was mentioned, so you thought it was him who saved you.”
“So, you mean…”
“You’ve liked the wrong person this whole time,” Changmin shrugged. “That’s what I meant.”
Jaejoong became speechless.
“Umma?” Changmin asked. “Erm… I’ll leave you be right now. Just don’t take too long to reboot your system, okay?” and he quickly walked out of the kitchen.
Seconds passed…
“Shim Changmin! Why didn’t you tell me sooner!?”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Bon appetite!” Junsu exclaimed as he raised his chopsticks, preparing to eat.
“Where did you learn that phrase?” Jaejoong asked as he lifted an eyebrow.
“Dogz,” Yoochun filled in.
“What?” Jaejoong asked, blinking.
“Dogz,” Yoochun repeated. “That dog-keeping game.”
“Do I want to know?”
“Probably not,” Changmin shrugged.
“Hey!” Junsu protested.
“Anyway, let’s eat,” Jaejoong cut in before the two could bicker. “No fighting during meals, remember?”
“Yes umma,” the two bowed at him.
Yunho laughed from beside him, and Jaejoong kicked his foot, making him yelp in pain.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
Sender: Seven-hyung
Message: happy birthday. Hope you have a pleasant year ahead of you
“Who is it?” Yunho asked as he changed the channel yet again.
“Seven-hyung,” Jaejoong shrugged. “Wishing happy birthday.”
“Oh,” Yunho mumbled. “There’s nothing good to watch,” he complained. “And to think we paid to get more channels.”
“You’re bitter,” Jaejoong rolled his eyes.
“I have every right to,” Yunho defended himself. “It’s not free, so it should at least be good.”
“Whatever,” Jaejoong huffed. “I’m going to make some popcorn.”
“What are you going to watch?” Yunho asked, looking up at Jaejoong who was already walking towards the kitchen.
“The Holiday.”
“…”
“What?” Jaejoong glared at him.
“Nothing! Nothing at all!”
