A/N: now all that’s left is the epilogue, and this series is officially finished. I’m a little sad at the thought, but oh well…
This chapter, like most of the chapters in this series, is pure mindless fluff :DDD it doesn’t hold a major plot point or anything, though I hope I did quite well in writing this.
Anyway, enjoy!
Chapter Twenty Seven - Prom and Promises
“Yes, Mom, I’ll bring him back soon,” Yunho sighed into the receiver as he waited for his mother to stop ranting about how he should bring his fiancé back to their house and let her see him in person, not through the pictures he took only.
“And what do you mean you haven’t told him about it yet!?” she demanded rather hysterically, nearly screeching into the phone and Yunho could hear his father’s distinctive groan of pain from the other end of the line. He probably failed to locate his ear plugs or something.
“Um, that means exactly that,” Yunho replied, not knowing how to explain it. “I mean, how can I further elaborate that statement?” he asked, grinning a little as he used his mother’s favorite line against her.
“Stop stealing my line, son. Be creative,” she grunted and huffed. “So, why haven’t you told him?”
“Let’s see it like this,” Yunho started, sighing again. He had his own reasons why he hadn’t told Jaejoong about the promise yet, and he was sure they were valid.
“I can’t see you,” his mother stated.
“It was figurative!” Yunho exclaimed desperately. Talking with his mother took a lot more than he thought.
“Fine, continue.”
“So, the promise was made ten years ago. He forgot about the promise, so I assume he forgot about the engagement.”
“Of course he forgot about it if he forgot about the promise in the first place!” his mother stated. “What happened to you, dear son? Did being surrounded by girls stress you out that much?”
“Be quiet and listen,” Yunho gritted out as he massaged his temple, trying to prevent the headache from coming, though he knew he was failing big time.
“Okay, I think your father wants to listen too,” his mother chirped happily and he heard the loud static before the other end became a little louder. He then knew it was put on loud speaker.
“So, since he forgot, I don’t think he’ll take the news well if I tell him directly,” Yunho reasoned. “And I tried a subtler approach. Don’t worry though, we’re dating now, and it’s official. I’ll tell him about it soon.”
“You better do it soon, son,” his father’s voice echoed slightly in whatever room they were in. “Your mother is driving me nuts with all her complaints!”
“I know, Dad, I know,” Yunho sighed, knowing perfectly well how his mother could be when she was excited over something, or anxious over something.
“Hey, do you think I can talk to him?” his mother requested.
“Won’t he be suspicious or something?” Yunho asked, raising his eyebrow though he knew well they wouldn’t be able to see it. It was like a habit he found hard to kill.
“Yunnie? Oh, I’ll call you later,” Jaejoong said as he stepped into the room and saw Yunho sitting on his bed, holding his cell phone close to his ears.
“Is that him? Is that him?” his mother screamed frantically. “Put him on the phone! Put him on the phone!”
“Um… what was that?” Jaejoong asked as he looked at Yunho who was holding his cell phone at arm’s length.
“Nothing, Jae, nothing, just my hyperactive mother,” Yunho shook his head. “Hey, come to think of it, would you like to talk to them?” he asked, and Jaejoong could distinctly heard “Go Yunho!” shouted through the phone.
“I guess…” Jaejoong walked over and sat in front of Yunho, then watched as Yunho switched it to loud speaker mode.
Then a high wail was heard through the phone.
“Are you Kim Jaejoong?” a female voice asked, and Jaejoong knew it was Yunho’s mother. She was just as cheerful as he had described her.
“Yes I am, Mrs. Jung,” Jaejoong answered carefully.
“Aw, no need to call me Mrs. Jung! You may call me Umma if you want!” she gushed happily and Yunho nearly fell off the bed.
“Mom!” he protested, blushing slightly while Jaejoong laughed.
“If that’s what you want, Umma,” he said, smiling slightly. He had heard Yunho’s rambling about his family, but he’d never really came in contact with Yunho’s family, so it was kind of a new experience.
“Then, you may call me Appa,” Yunho’s father butted in before his mother could scream again.
“Not you too, Dad!” Yunho protested again, blushing even more.
Jaejoong laughed as he watched Yunho trying to hide his blush with his pillow.
“Oh, Yunnie, when it’s your turn to meet his parents, make sure not to embarrass yourself! If you do, I’ll throw you out of a speeding taxi!” his mother threatened.
Silence.
“Why taxi?”
“I don’t know, it just sounds cool.”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
The four talked about trivial matters, and Jaejoong was happy to finally talk with them. He was the kind of person who felt at ease when talking to someone older than him, so it wasn’t a problem for him.
Yunho looked at the clock and noticed that it was only an hour before the prom, which was the most anticipated event throughout high school years.
“Jae? Why aren’t you getting ready?” he asked as he noticed that Jaejoong was still sitting with him on the bed. Unlike him, Jaejoong had to wear a dress-he was still disguising as a girl-while he wore a simple white shirt, black trousers and black suit, complete with a black tie.
“Um, that was why I came here in the first place,” Jaejoong twiddled with his finger, showing his nervousness. “The dress is still in the dry cleaning place three blocks away from here.”
“What!?”
Before Jaejoong could utter any more words, he was dragged out of the house into their shared car, thrown into the passenger seat, and got the seatbelt strapped on without him realizing it, then he gripped the seat tightly until his knuckles turned white while Yunho’s driving skills were put into test.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Hyung, where were you?” Junsu asked as soon as Yunho stepped into their shared house, carrying a big bag while Jaejoong followed him from behind, looking a little pale, as if he had just seen a ghost.
“Out to fetch something, right, Jae?” he asked, apparently unfazed even after all the speeding that nearly got them pulled over by the local police.
“Right,” Jaejoong nodded heavily. “I better get ready now,” he added, looking at the clock and noticed that it only took them twenty minutes. Maybe sometimes he’ll learn how to drive like that from Yunho.
He took the bag from Yunho’s hand and silently walked into the bathroom while Junsu looked at Yunho strangely.
“Did you make him see Death?” Junsu asked, snickering slightly at the idea. “I know you are pretty confident with your driving skills, but not everyone has a strong enough heart to endure it.”
“Hmm… Jae apparently has, since he hasn’t gotten a heart attack yet,” Yunho shrugged and flopped down onto the couch tiredly. “Go get ready, Su. Tell Chun and Min to as well.”
“Roger!” Junsu giggled and bounded over to Yoosumin room.
“One of these days, I’ll need to cut down the sugar supply for all of them,” Yunho groaned as he slumped back on the couch.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“Jaejoong-shii? Do you need help?” Junsu asked as he peered into the Yunjae room and saw Jaejoong fiddling with the zipper at the side of the dress.
“Uh, yes please, Junsu-ah,” Jaejoong nodded and motioned for him to come in. Yunho was currently using the bathroom so he wasn’t there. “I need to zip it properly, but it’s a little hard.”
Junsu quickly took hold of the zipper and zipped it up, before grinning. “There, all done.”
“Thank you,” Jaejoong bowed, and walked over to the bed, sitting down on it. “Standing up all the time hurts.”
“I’ll help you with the make up,” Junsu offered as he walked over after taking the make-up kit Heechul had packed for Jaejoong. “And I’ll help you pick the right shoes.”
“Sometimes I wonder how Heechul managed to pack all those things, and not breach the weight limit,” Jaejoong commented out loud, looking at the luggage he had brought with him to Korea.
Junsu giggled and took out a pair of grey shoes with a nearly transparent flower on the outer side of it. it went quite well with Jaejoong’s grey dress which had a few grey flowers scattered at the lower front part of it.
“The dress looks nice, hyung,” Junsu praised as he looked over it again. He then applied some foundation and powder on Jaejoong’s face, before adding some extras like eyeliner and such.
“Thanks, at least Heechul has a good fashion sense,” Jaejoong chuckled as he closed his eyes and let Junsu apply some light-colored eye shadow on his eyelids.
“I agree with that,” Junsu nodded thoughtfully.
“And you’re a great make-up artist,” he added with a smile.
“Aw, thank you hyung,” Junsu squealed in delight. “But you’re already beautiful to start with, so there’s not much to work on.”
Jaejoong laughed good-heartedly and opened his eyes. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” Junsu replied as he put away everything he took out of the box.
“I guess we better hurry now, we only have ten minutes left,” Jaejoong looked at the clock, and at Yunho who had just entered.
“What!? Chunnie is still sleeping next door!”
“I thought I told you to tell Chun and Min to get ready!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
The prom was similar to a ball, and most students came in pairs with their best friends except for the Yunjae, Yoosu, and Changmin whose partner was the buffet table.
The event reached its peak when their headmistress stepped onto the stage and cleared her throat, gaining the attention of all students present-even Changmin stopped mid-chew.
“Good evening to all seniors who are present here,” Mrs. Han started. “As you might have known, all of you had passed the exams with at least satisfactory grades,” she said, and the students cheered.
“Now, following the tradition of the previous years, we will pick a pair who is seen as the best pair. Last year’s best pair was two friends who had been friends for twelve years, and were always there for each other through good and bad,” Mrs. Han continued, and the students were listening intently.
“This year, we will pick the best pair again, and you all get to vote who the best pair is,” she said, and the teachers and staffs distributed a piece of paper to each student.
“We will announce the winner at the end of this event. Until then, please do enjoy yourselves. You all deserve this for all your hard work throughout the school year.”
The five boys sat in a table together and looked at each other with raised eyebrows.
“Fine, I’ll speak first again,” Changmin grunted out after he swallowed his food. “Who are you guys voting for?”
“I vote for Yoosu,” Jaejoong answered, looking at the piece of paper in his hand.
“Aw, thank you hyung,” Junsu latched himself onto Jaejoong’s hand. “I voted for Yoosu as well.”
“Talk about being narcissistic,” Changmin snickered lowly.
“I heard that,” Junsu growled.
“I picked Yoosu too,” Yoochun cut in, and Changmin rolled his eyes.
“Yunjae,” Changmin stated firmly, and all eyes were trained on Yunho.
“Minfood,” Yunho started and Yoosu burst out laughing.
“Psh! Just say you’re envious because my food never leaves me!” Changmin defended himself, and huffed angrily.
“We’ll see about that, Minnie-ah,” Junsu cackled evilly as his eyes glinted dangerously.
“Don’t you dare, Kim Junsu! I’ll hang you if I found you hiding my secret food stash again!”
“Um, are you guys finished yet?” their Biology teacher asked as she eyed them warily, as if they were rabies-infected dogs who were ready to bite anyone who came near.
“Yes,” Jaejoong answered and passed the papers to the teacher who quickly walked away afterwards.
“Wanna bet who gets picked?” Junsu dared, still grinning.
“Yunjae,” Yoominsu said together.
“Bleh, it’s not a bet if we all take the same side,” Junsu protested.
“I’m never participating in a bet I’m not sure I will win, so unless you guys change your choice, I’m not going to bet,” Changmin shook his head firmly.
“Why are you guys so sure we’ll win?” Jaejoong asked, genuinely curious.
“Call it a hunch, hyung, a hunch.”
“A hunch from the hunch back of Nostradamus.”
“You’ve been reading too many crack stories, Chun. Since when is Nostradamus a name of a place?”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
As they had expected, Yunho and Jaejoong were voted to be the year’s best pair, and Yoosumin got into an argument about how Changmin should’ve relented and picked another pair instead since he had more money to spend than Yoosu had at the moment.
Yunho walked up to the stage and Jaejoong followed closely behind. After properly thanking the students for their support, they thanked the teachers and staffs as well.
Then, right before the two of them walked back downstairs, Yunho turned to look at Jaejoong, and the students watched in rapt attention, excitedly awaiting what was going to happen next.
“As I’ve promised, I’ll tell you the promise behind the ring when we graduated,” Yunho started, looking at the ring hanging loosely around Jaejoong’s neck.
“Uh, yes?” Jaejoong asked, still confused as to just why did Yunho have to tell him while they were on the steps leading to the upstage.
“Before you left, I promised I’ll marry you if we meet again, so that we’ll never be separated ever again,” Yunho started. “My mother told me to find a partner and I looked for you.”
“Ah…” Jaejoong mumbled, and Yunho patiently waited for his reaction, although his insides were slowly turning upside down in nervousness.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner, Yunho-yah?” Jaejoong asked, smiling sweetly at him. “It wasn’t an easy job keeping it a secret, was it?”
“Guh, you’re so cute,” Yunho pulled Jaejoong forward into a hug. “No, seriously, you’re too nice, Boo.”
“Hmm… would you rather I be mean then?” Jaejoong asked teasingly.
“No.”
“Thought so.”
Then, as Yunho pulled Jaejoong into a kiss, Jaejoong wondered if it was alright to do that in public, while the students cheered loudly, and the party poppers were popped, throwing colorful confetti all over the stage.
“Hey! That was supposed for the farewell ceremony!”
“Oops! Sorry Mrs. Han, but we couldn’t resist!”
