A/N: So much to do and so little time… I have to do a lot of assignments, but I still manage to write this. Hm… my sis and my dad were out karaoke-ing. I’d like to join them, but I’m not confident with my voice XD
Anyway, I may be wrong, but many people write about home economics where the female students learn to cook and do other things. Is that right? There’s no home economics in my country so I’m not sure. I’ll use the class in this chapter, but if it’s wrong, please, do tell me so I can correct it
Chapter Seven - Cookies and Truffles
Jaejoong sat in his seat next to Seulgi. The four boys were off at other classes since home economics were not for boys. Oh well.
He sighed as the teacher rambled about how home economics was viewed as a plan to keep women in the kitchen and such, but in actuality was a class that taught them basic skills that women need to know in order to become great, competent women who would one day stand behind great men.
As the saying went, behind every great man was a great woman… or something of that sort. Not that Jaejoong really believed that, since his mother was far better than his careless father-who gave him the carelessness and klutziness in the first place.
“Now, I want you to make something from chocolate,” the teacher announced as she tapped the blackboard with a plastic stick. “Make sure to decorate it nicely, and wrap it up with the patterned plastic wrappers prepared. The ingredients are all ready on your work table.”
The girls in the class then rushed to get to their work table. They only had one and half an hour left for the class and they surely needed at least half an hour to process whatever they were making.
“Mm… let’s see,” Jaejoong mumbled to himself as he flipped a cookbook open. It was given by the teacher earlier when he asked for one. “Changmin likes chocolate so it won’t matter what I make. Yoochun and Junsu like truffles and Yunho…”
He scratched the back of his head. He remembered Yoochun telling him that when they were having a talk about what kind of snack they like. It was random, but Changmin reasoned that it was because Jaejoong was the one who cooked for them so he had to know their likes and dislikes.
“Now… what did they say he likes again…” he mumbled to himself, flipping the pages of the cookbook again, trying to remember what Yunho liked.
“Oh right! I remember now. Aish, how could I forget,” he shook his head, mentally berating himself and quickly flipped the cookbook to the page where the recipe for truffles was. The picture looked nice, and he could only hope his creation would turn out nearly as good as the picture.
He placed a bar of chocolate in a pot and poured some water into it before heating it up, waiting for the chocolate to melt into sticky goo. He then looked around, wondering what his friends made.
“Ah, you’re baking cookies?” he commented randomly when he saw Seulgi kneading the dough with her hands. “Looks like hard work,” he added quietly.
“Mmh, I’m not someone who likes to take shortcuts,” Seulgi retorted, kneading the dough almost viciously as she added chocolate syrup and kneaded it again, turning the dough brownish.
Jaejoong nodded his head absently. He poured some icing into the tray before pouring the chocolate into it so that the icing would stick to the truffles once they cooled down. He also stuck strawberry and pineapple jam inside to make them slightly sour.
He sighed. Compared to what Seulgi made, his was nothing. They were easy to prepare and he had so much idle time while he waited for the chocolate to melt and cool. Was he someone who liked to take shortcuts?
“Are you giving them to someone?” he asked out of the blue, again, as he stared at the heart shape Seulgi was making out of her cookies. She also added cream cheese and whipped cream on them in a heart swirl pattern.
“Yes, I’m giving them to Yunho,” Seulgi answered matter-of-factly. “Does it matter?”
“Nope, not at all,” he shook his head, not realizing that Seulgi was annoyed as hell. “I’m giving some to Yunho too, in case he wants some,” he added, and remained oblivious to the now-seething Seulgi.
“I didn’t ask and I certainly don’t care who you’re giving those to,” Seulgi remarked fiercely, nearly growling at Jaejoong who was still sitting happily in his seat, waiting for his truffles to cool.
“Hm, of course. Why would you care?” Jaejoong said, more like to himself than Seulgi though. He was slightly disappointed that Seulgi would be far more interested in Yunho than him. Was he that unattractive? Why did people always choose others over him?
“Oh, on second thought, I think Yunho--”
“I don’t care what you think!”
“Miss Bae and Miss Kim! If you two don’t shut up now, I’ll give you two detentions and I’ll feed your creations to the neighbor’s dogs!”
“But, Mrs. Im, dogs aren’t supposed to eat chocolates!”
“Detention!”
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.
“This is all your fault,” Seulgi muttered under her breath for the umpteenth time that day, specifically after Mrs. Im gave her the detention for correcting her.
Why would she give her a detention for saving the dogs’ souls anyway? That was so unfair. And they told kids to be benevolent all the time.
“I’m sorry,” Jaejoong bowed his head in shame. He didn’t want to cause troubles to anyone, especially not his idol. He was only trying to be helpful, but then again, whenever he tried to be helpful, he ended up being very unhelpful instead.
“You better be,” she huffed and turned, placing her tray into the oven and waited for it to bake. She looked over at what Jaejoong made and grudgingly admitted that they looked good.
“Would you like to try some? It’s dark chocolate with jam,” Jaejoong chirped happily when he noticed Seulgi was looking at the truffles he made. They had cooled down and he was in the middle of wrapping each piece with a plastic wrapper.
“Ew… I hate dark chocolate,” Seulgi shook her head. “I prefer milk or white. And jam? Seriously, who would like to eat them, anyway?” she asked in distaste, looking at them as if they were lumps of coal.
“Well, for starters, Yunho would,” Jaejoong feigned nonchalance. He knew that Yunho’s name would spark her interest, and though he felt guilty for using Yunho’s name like that, he couldn’t help it.
“What!? Yunho-oppa would?” Seulgi nearly shrieked at the thought.
“Yes,” Jaejoong grinned a little. “I know what those four like. I cook for them, after all,” he added, and he could feel jealousy emitting from the girl. He knew for a fact that she was jealous of him, but he could still wish that she was jealous of the four, right?
And then he knew exactly what his teacher meant when he taught about wishful thinking back when he was still an elementary grade student.
“Psh, I bet he’ll like my cookies better,” Seulgi huffed and turned away, crossing her arms in front of her chest.
Jaejoong couldn’t quiet put it, but he was feeling competitive. He had tried telling Seulgi about Yunho’s likes and dislikes but she wouldn’t heed him. It wasn’t his fault if Yunho refused later.
“Wanna bet?” he asked, an amused glint in his eyes.
“Fine! If I win, you have to stay away from Yunho-oppa!” Seulgi replied agitatedly. “What do you want?”
Jaejoong’s mind reeled quickly as he thought of something he had been wanting all this time. What did he ask for his fifteenth birthday and was refused by his parents back then?
Ah of course. “I want a copy of Linkin Park’s Minutes to Midnight album. They’re imported so it costs quite a lot,” Jaejoong said with a small grin plastered on his face. He had craved for the CD and now he had a chance of finally owning it.
“Fine. I’ll go buy it for you if you win. But if I win, you have to ask Mrs. Han to be switched with me, so that I stay with them,” Seulgi demanded, glaring at Jaejoong.
“Of course,” Jaejoong nodded his head while he was jumping around in joy inside.
Just as he said that, the door opened and Yunho walked towards the teacher’s desk, talking briefly with Mrs. Im before he walked towards the two.
“What are you doing here?” Jaejoong asked, surprised to see Yunho there before the bell even rang. Sure, the bell would ring in two minutes, but still.
“Our class was let out early, and Junsu told me to fetch you here,” Yunho shrugged. “What’s that?” he asked as he pointed at the wrapped chocolates. “You’re not making a plastic rose or a decoration from plastic right?”
“Yah! There’s a piece of chocolate inside!” Jaejoong shoved it in front of Yunho’s eyes, pouting slightly. He might not be the best decorator or wrapper, but they shouldn’t be that bad!
“Oh, sorry,” Yunho apologized quickly as he took the wrapped piece and unwrapped it. “What’s this, then?”
“Dark chocolate truffle with jam inside,” Jaejoong answered as he looked at Yunho. Although he was feeling quite sure of himself earlier, he couldn’t help but feel nervous now. He could only hope that his memory served him right.
“Strawberry?”
“Yes.”
Yunho popped the piece into his mouth and slowly chewed on it. Seulgi-after recovering from the slight shock because Yunho did eat the chocolate-used the chance to spread some strawberry jam on her cookies. She should’ve used the jams like Jaejoong did. Then, her chance of winning would be greater.
“Oppa! I made these for you! Would you want some? It’s a chocolate cookie with cream cheese, whipped cream and strawberry jam,” Seulgi butted in as she offered the cookie to Yunho.
Jaejoong raised an eyebrow at the added ingredient. Wasn’t that considered cheating?
Yunho looked at the cookie speculatively, and sighed. “I’m sorry. I hate sweets.”
Jaejoong mentally laughed out loud at his win. He jumped up and hugged Yunho tight in the process while his mind was still hazed by excitement of finally having his own original copy of the album.
“Thank you, Yunho. I love you so much!” he declared and quickly released him, turning to wink at Seulgi, mouthing “I’ll be waiting for the CD tomorrow” then skipping out of the room happily.
Seulgi glared after his retreating form and Yunho frowned before he sighed defeatedly.
“I swear, everyone I live with are slave drivers! First Junsu told me to go here and fetch her. Now she left me here with her chocolates, expecting me to carry them for her! Sheesh!”
End of Chapter Seven
At first I clearly stated that what Yunho disliked are sweets, but then again, I decided not to include that part and instead focused on the different ingredients they used to make the impression that what Yunho liked was the jam. Turned out that Yunho hated sweets.
Ahem, sorry about the Linkin Park insert. I just couldn’t help it. I’m a fan of them, and I was grieving when I heard that Mike Shinoda quitted Linkin Park. Oh well. He’d still in Fort Minor though.
Jaejoong’s being happily oblivious again in this chapter. I’ve seen a lot of characters in mangas in which the girls act romantic towards the boys, but turn out they don’t realize it XD
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. There is less humor, I admit, and that stressed me out. Still, I need to prepare for another torturous week ahead of me, so this kinda cheered me up slightly.
