I also have thought bass could be annoying.

Thing is, the illusionary "warmth" of bass is often craved exactly because CD audio is so screechy and shallow. The lack of spatial detail, coarseness in the high frequency range make amplifier power's energy substitute (for some listeners apparently) the fine high-frequency energy that's an important part of music.

Bass might be an artificial substitute of the impact of finer audio formats or live music for some.
