omg, I remember that show! Some of my elementary school teachers would show them in class, and sometimes I watched it on weekdays (either before or after school, can't remember) because it was during the same cartoon block as Digimon I think.

Might also explain origins of the bus. It has subspace, transforms, and seems vaguely intelligent.
