In Which Rebekah Rants

So this is really random and is only brought up because of random articles I managed to find while looking for something else entirely, though Disney related. This also has absolutely nothing to do with anyone in particular and if anyone has put up any blog posts or anything vaguely resembling this topic anytime recently I DID NOT KNOW and this has ( Read more... )

me stuff, rant

I AM HIGHLY OFFENDED!

Oh wait, no I'm not. I've observed that same crazy man-hating (and inaccurate) conotation to 'feminist.' I've noticed that working with only men, then hanging out with largly male friend groups, the word feminism doesn't often come up, even in joking. If anything, I'll get, "She's not a feminist. She's just one of the guys." To which I usally reply, "Yeah. Kind of one and the same."

I like the point you made about Roxanne, people with guns, and male/female officers.

But then again, I AM super kung-fu fighting girl. So your analogies are irrelevent. :P

LOLOLLOLOL ILU <3

Rofl. Yeah. Sounds about right.

Thanks! Yes that point about Roxanne has always driven me crazy because I see it a lot and not even with just Roxanne, but in general. The trend I've seen is that if a normal, female human character has to be saved by someone, they're seen as a damsel. On the flip side if they kick total ass for no reason then people start calling her like a mary sue or unrealistic or this or that or the other and it's just like ">:| GUYS. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS." I mean there are a whole lot of other factors but just. gggahhh *Flails around*

ROFL Yes. Yes you are a super kung-fu fighting girl. <3 XD

Yeah, I gotta admit some of those articles take it a bit far. Like I read one about Mulan where they complained about Mulan still being suborninate to a man or something, I think. And it's like. Um. But that makes sense? Of course the movie does have issues(like most movies do), but that complaint just threw me.

And I wasn't crazy about Roxanne, but yeah it's easy to get more critical of a character when she's female, because of all the baggage. :/

This is why I would love to see Disney make an epic adventure movie that is just as successful as the Princess ones that has no love story.

But when it comes down to it Bekah, the reason why the feminist movement points these things out, even if it's sometimes over the top, is to point out the fact that we do live in a society of gender roles and even when we try to break away from them, we still end up doing things that can be misconstrued as inequality between the sexes because it's so engrained into our society.
