Transporter Room - Away Team

Spock eyed his companion - this counterpart had seen only the briefest glimpse of sickbay and the confines of the room he shared with Pike. But Spock would not question the Acting Captain's order to include him. He would be of benefit, particularly with his practical knowledge of Romulans and their ways ( Read more... )

It listened to the screams of the hevam above the roar of the environmental controls. It felt the blood of its master, staining its decks. It computed the idea of peace, wanting to save its crew and itself. Terms and agreement.

There was only one choice to be made left, even if it would displease her crew.

She beamed away all enemy organics back to the Enterprise, minus the organic communicating with her.

Courtesy met with courtesy.

Spock studied this Romulan. Something about his voice when speaking of Narada reminded Spock of his own Enterprise's Engineer Scott. He would make the offer.

"She does not require the console to speak. It is probable, given the similarities between Vulcans and Romulans, that you do not require it either. I can easily teach you. It would require the use of a mind meld, however."

He speaks again to Narada.

*ready sickbay with full power: prepare to receive injured party*

*second-in-command would speak to you* *will instruct in method if he is receptive*

"We should go to your captain quickly."

He moves back to allow Ayel access to the console but also room to consider his offer.

There was a flash of a message in Spock's mind, just before Jim went under. It was frantic, but urged calm.

Radio silence coming. Need to be knocked out to let them work on Jim. I'm fine. Just sleeping. Be safe. I'm here.

The connection was not broken, but Jim would be drugged to keep him from interfering with Kirk's treatment. Without Spock, Jim didn't know how to sever the link between the Kirks.

*order received, preparing sickbay*

There was a brief silence before she spoke again,

*Ael understood, touch* *want to understand*

Using her newly gained vocabulary.

"It is probable, given the similarities between Vulcans and Romulans, that you do not require it either."

Ayel smirked. "Tactful. No wonder you're an ambassador." He tilted his head. "Well, will be--may become."

A mind meld?

They needed to hurry. Best if he could talk to her, something beyond screaming for data and hoping she understood.

A mind meld. He'd heard the stories, everyone had. But he was no stranger to pain. And--Spock hadn't moved to attack him, didn't look as if he even wanted to.

Maybe the stories were wrong.

Ayel nodded. "What do I do?"

When he returned to the Enterprise, even though it was not his own Enterprise, Spock would request an hour to himself. Just an hour of alone, of quiet, of his mind being his own. He felt stretched across many identities now.

"I cannot say that my future holds that which transpired with the Spock you knew."

But he nods a polite acknowledgment of the rueful compliment anyway. Sarek had taught him well, after all.

He steps carefully closer to the Romulan, to Ayel, and puts a hand back on the console. The other, he brings close to Ayel's tattoed face.

"You must simply learn."

The meld is gentleness and light and as shallow as possible - Spock has no desire to show this stranger his hidden places. This is a teaching meld, a guiding meld. He speaks to Narada and Ayel, show Ayel the place in his mind capable of this and demonstrates the feeling of it.

*concept: communication*

*sense memory: mind sharing*

*medium: touch*

Narada had been shouting earlier, it had taken that effort to reach her Ayel.

As Ayel learned, so did she. Always hungry, always hungry for knowledge, better, more. Now, she was learning a new way to communicate with her crew. A way to communication through the medium of touch. They had always touched her, through consoles, leaning against a wall, a brush against a rail. She could learn this well.

She wanted to know more, but now, she wanted alha safe.

Unfortunately, gentleness was a concept that would need to be learned in time. So the feeling, if it could be called that, of severe worry poured over them both.

The hand at his temple was dry and warm, and opened into light against the backs of his closed eyes.

To learn.

That would be good. He's had the doors battered down twice already. But this is different, Spock's way is different. Not a flood--rain in summer, smooth, steady down the windows--yes, have to be clear, but let's keep the water out, ie? The windows are all mirrors, all closed, showing him nothing but himself...Not a trap. A shield--against him.

A wry nod to the glass. Nothing personal. Can't afford to linger here, anyway.

concept: communication.

Yes!

tentative: response, exchange. concept: works by touching, speaking by touching...clarify: sharing of minds?

Like a data tree but elegant, guided, lyrical and repeating. Much easier than before. And that's because of Spock. Because of what he's willing to do.

impression: knowledge, control, admiration, respect.

re: inquiry: necessity, urgency, first priority.

inquiry: narada--light our way? impression: pride, admiration, joy. They had to hurry. Couldn't do that stumbling ( ... )

*inquiry: understood, Ael*

The lights flickered in the hallway then went solid, bright, with orange lights along the edges.

*pathway open to alha, urgency required!*

Spock withdrew from the meld - they would require practice but should be able to communicate well enough for now.

"I would heed Narada's counsel for urgency, Ayel. Shall we proceed?"
