I guess I should be happy. She's close, I know she is, and I can start looking for her again soon. It's weird, though. The more I'm here, the less I'm in a rush to find her.As much as Zia had tried, he just wasn't falling asleep. Tossing and turning seemed pointless, and after what felt like another hour tick by without him falling asleep, he ( Read more... )

Mikal had already settled on not getting any more sleep, but it was Zia's getting up that prompted her to actually get out of bed. She waited for a minute or so, rubbing her eyes as she slowly sat upright, then grabbed her backpack before heading over to where he was sitting.

She yawned as she walked over, stretching her arms up over her head, but she shot him the closest thing to a crooked grin she could manage all the same. "Hey," she said, just loudly to be enough, then took a seat beside him, already opening her bag to fish out a cigarette of her own. "Still can't sleep, huh?" She couldn't blame him, really. They both had something to look forward to the next morning -- he'd be one step closer to his girlfriend, she'd be one step closer to getting the hell out of this place, just like she'd wanted since she first woke up here.

Zia had seen the movement out of the corner of his eye, but it wasn't until she spoke and sat down that he looked over at her. While he never would admit it outright, he found himself strangely relieved to have company. Thinking too much had always been his problem, here as much as home was.

"I think I may just miss sleeping in the car," he replied dryly, shrugging one shoulder. He didn't know exactly what the matter was, truth be told, but joking about it seemed as good a way to deal with things as any. He took a long drag before speaking again. "Guess you can't sleep either, huh?"

Mikal wrinkled her nose a little at the prospect of sleeping in the car -- she still didn't know how he could doze off so easily with Eugene driving -- but then returned the shrug, resting her elbows on her knees as she leaned forward. "Guess not," she admitted, though she said it as casually as she could. There was just too much to think about, after all the commotion of Kneller's dog being found. Weirdly enough, she'd been focused more on what would happen when Zia found Desirée, especially if she was as close as he said she thought she was, and they were 'reunited' or something equally sentimental-sounding before she got to go home. Whatever reasons there were for that, though, she didn't want to dwell on. Not when they'd be leaving in a matter of hours. "It's kind of nice out here, though, with everyone else in bed. As nice as anywhere in this place can be, anyway."

"Yeah. I wonder where Eugene and Nanuk wandered off to," he said, glancing around. There was no doubt in his mind the two of them were together, wherever they were. It was near impossible to pull him away from her since they first met each other, which was the problem entirely.

He had to admit, he was going to miss having Eugene around when they set out in the morning. As much of a headache he could be sometimes, he was the closest thing Zia could call a friend in a long time. He knew it was for the best, but it didn't make it any easier.

He took another slow drag, staring at the fire now instead of towards Mikal. "So, you think the guy that has Kneller's dog is really going to pull off some big miracle?"
