The hut wasn't the most fantastic thing in the world, and there were areas it could be approved upon, but Zia didn't mind. For the first time in a long time, he actually found himself completely happy. It almost felt foreign to him, but in a good way. He had missed it ( Read more... )

Something about the whole getting a hut thing still seemed kind of surreal, but either despite or because of that fact, Mikal was remarkably excited as they stood inside, regardless of how empty the place was. They could fix that easily. Grinning, she stepped over close to him, resting her chin on his shoulder.

Zia glanced over at her, letting out a quiet laugh. The one nice thing about this all was that where he wasn't the constant optimist, she was. They worked well together, and he didn't doubt they could make this all work, too.

"Me too," he said. It wasn't perfect, but it was more than they'd ever have in the Compound. "Definitely better than what we had, anyway."

"It'll be nice to have some privacy," Mikal said in agreement, moving away just enough to nod. "And to be away from the Compound." The latter was really the selling point, as far as she was concerned. She had no problem being around people, but that place was too goddamn dismal for her. It was much nicer out here. She almost couldn't believe it still, the way all of this had happened so fast, but she wasn't objecting, either. Optimist or not, she couldn't remember the last time she'd really been this happy, either.

Zia knew she hadn't been too big a fan of the Compound. He understood, really, since a lot of it was there just for function. This felt like it was a break from it.

"I think there's a person on the island that makes furniture, if you want me to keep an eye out for him," he said, finally moving toward to go pet Eugene on the head. She'd settled pretty well on the bed. "You know, so it's not so empty in here."
