Well ... The Weatherforecasters Did Not Lie

May 20, 2019 06:13

They said we'd have a freeze last night. After a weekend of almost constant rain. Of course, the sky did clear during the night--which is how the temperature dropped below freezing ( Read more... )

I so love the scent of lilacs ... My grandmother had them in her yard in Pennsylvania. There are very few scents I enjoy more ... maybe chocolate chip cookies baking ...

I hope you have a splendid week, Val!

I feel exactly the same! Wanna come over and clip an armful of blooms to fragrance-up your house for the last week?

Thanks, Neil! The same to you.

Luckily, pruning is good for lilacs--keeps them bushier rather than rangy, and gives fuller blooms.
Their scent is one of my favorite things about spring!

You know...my mind does know that. But my heart whimpers with every branch or twig I clip off..

Lilac is my favorite scent, as well. Sigh. Happy days.

How the heck do you get a freeze in May?

MyJeff tells me that we've had snow in every month but August. He insists it's true. Most of the time I have no difficulty believing it. April is getting known for her surprise mid-month blizzards.

This wasn't too hard of a freeze...

Yup. I know about rain and thunderstorms, too. We received something in the neighborhood of 1 1/2 inches of rain over this last weekend. Annnnd...those same forecasters are suggesting we watch for "showers", "rain", & "thunderstorms" at different times this week--particularly Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Around here, weather really is a valid conversation point.

WOW, I wish my lilac bushes had blooms like that. One doesn't even have any. :( The other I think has some blooms on 5 or 6 branches. :o
PLEASE let that be the end of the cold temps for a good long while. :o
Hugs, Jon

Have you ever pruned your lilacs? That might very well be part of your problem--as Jenn Hubbard just reminded me (her comment up a little way).

I suggest try trimming back at least one of your lilacs after blooming is done this year. See what happens with it next year. Just a suggestion...

Agreed. I'm ready for some steady warmth ... the Big Heat can hold off for months yet, as far as I'm concerned. But a nice comfy Warmth would be most welcome.

Hugs back!

Another friend sent me a link about about lilacs and pruning was one of the things it suggested. :o
Not sure if it can save the dwarf bush I have, I think it's beyond saving, but will have to try with all of them. :o

Good luck, my friend. They're worth making the effort. As you know...

Good night, Jon. Time for a little sleep for me.
